The getaway is one of the best action games i have ever played. The graphics in my opinion are amazing. And for all those who compare this game to GTA, just stop. It shouldnt be compared to GTA and just think how big of a hit this game would be if GTA was never made. And yes there may be many flaws and many more things that should be in the game (like the lack of guns). One thing thats not a flaw that many people think is is that you cant shoot civilians. Well their wrong, i just figured out the other day that holding the L2 or R2 button will aim the gun and you can move it and shoot. But like every other PS2 game the getaway has its mistakes but overall it is a challenging knockout action game that if u compare it to GTA it would kick butt.

Ahead of its time.

The Getaway is an important game if you're into gaming. Notice I didn't say fun, but important. Kinda like Dragon's Lair was in the 80's. We all played and thought, wow, this looks cool, but all we were really doing was moving the joystick or pressing a button at the exact right time while the rest of Dirk's moves were all scripted. Dragon's Lair was the first stone laid in the bridge between 2D Pac-Man type games and the 3D realism we have today.

The Getaway is the biggest, if not the first, stone in the bridge to totally immersive, cinematic, life-like games. It unfolds like a movie, a bit like a Tarantino movie in fact because it is told from two or more perspectives. However, gameplay is really just driving all over a beautifully recreated London and then shooting folks. In between that are long, but not terribly annoying cutscenes where the real action occurs.

The Getaway does away with any health meter and there is no health to be picked up. You recover merely by leaning against a wall. Seems to me they traded one farce for another, perhaps worse one. You can get through most missions by taking your time and leaning anytime you get shot. The Getaway also has no map, in-game, on paper, or otherwise. You can only know where you need to go by watching the turn signals on your car. This can get VERY annoying and I often feel as if I'm on the road to nowhere. The map is also big, so it can take a very long time to get from place to place.

If you buy this game, be warned, driving takes up the vast majority of the playing time, which was not what I expected. The shooting elements of the missions can usually be accomplished in just a few minutes. If you want to see where games are going, by all means get it, and go "hum, this genre will be fun before long." If you're looking for some fun and good gameplay, just replay GTA: Vice City again. It'll be much more entertaining.

Know this, there's a reason why this game has a $10 lower MSRP.

Great game

This is a great game...it definately brought something a little different to the table. It is somewhat similar to GTA. Here are some of the differences I found

getaway pros

1. the story line is more suspenseful thus making it more interesting that GTA
2. The graphics is much better
3. The jamaican accents are real(thank god)
4. you can escape the cops
5. The cops and some bad guys will give up if you hold one of theirs as hostage.

getaway cons

1. you are only limited to only 3 types of weapons
2. There are no chopper, bikes or planes
3. Cheat codes are ...
4. not as entertaining as GTA (vice city)

I guess the ultimate game would be a cross between vice city, getaway and hitman

A Good Game with LOTS of Exciting Missions

This game cannot be compared to GTA Vice City because it is not supposed to be the same game. The Getaway has many great qualities like realistic cars, amazing graphics, and movie-like cut scenes. There are no life bars, power ups or anything else found in GTA. You have to guide yourself through 24 missions with limited amount of help. It can be challenging and it takes some time. Yes, in GTA you can roam around and do anything but here you have to always be doin a mission. but after you beat the game, you can have a free roam mode which you can find secret vehicles. This game is so much fun and also takes some time... but you cannot compare it to GTA...
I recommend that you rent it first....

This game is fun.You don't have to beat the game to get Free Roam, look in the "Tips & Tricks" magazine for codes such as to unlock Free Roam. This game has cars that exist in real life such as a Lexus,Saab,Honda, and more!In Free Roam, you can tour London and drive wherever you want.Be warned, there are cops and if you try to steal a gangster car, they will shoot at you. There are some cons of this game:poor camera angles,no health bars or health pickups, the missions are hard, and you cant skip the cutscenes in the missions.I still found this game to be fun.I mostly like Free Roam. You should probably rent this first.

Great idea - poor gameplay

This is a breakthrough game in the graphic treatment of the whole of London with a good gansta movie plot. A lot of ideas here are going to seem very familiar to GTA but with a slightly different twist. This is an OK game - but is could have been great. The designers forgot to put in decent gameplay. The first person shooter is pretty fun but the controls are a little clunky at times. The car scenes are just frustrating and dull - 10 plus minutes to drive across London to the next mission - its not that fun in real life. Worth trying it if you can find it cheap - if not wait till they come out with a version with a decent game involved.

I hope the make a movie and a part 2.

As you can see this is my second review about this game, the first one I wrote it yesterday. Well let's get to business. This game is about this ex-bank robber who wants to kill the leader of one of the wealthiest british mafias, whos name is Charlie Jolson. You play 12 good-graphic-good-gameplay missions as the ex-bank robber, and 12 good-graphic-good-gamplay missions as a vigilante cop who is obsessed with seeing Charlie Jolson in jail. They could make a movie out of this game because the point of the game was to let players play a movie,so why not let fans SEE a movie? Also,a second part of this game could be made. Any ideas how it would be? No? Anyone? Well I hope it would be like this: Since Charlie Jolson's imprisionment, the british mafia has been on constant battles against the police of England. So the same vigilante cop as in The Getaway has decided to get Mark Hammond to help them. Yep that's right the same ex-bank robber as in The Getaway. So they both fight together again against this time another wealthy british mafia leader called Jack Matthews. This time players could get a chance of playing one mission as Mark Hammond and one mission as the cop. Well what can I say,I have a big immagination.

This game is just cool

The get away, yet a great game, is not for all of us. I find it hard to have much fun when you only limp at a snails pace. You have to be a huge fan of this to have a lot of fun. I would consider making the over-all difficulty lessen or be able to select a difficulty for your own good.

...and I thought Vice City rocked!!

WOW!!! What a great game. Just completed mission 24 (last one). I was obsessed with this game. The graphics were amazing and the fun was never-ending. Most of the missions made you figure out what to do on your own which added to the difficulty overall. The lack of angles for driving was a little frustrating but you get used to it. The only thing that I really disliked about the game is that if you turned off the power to the game, you would have to sit through the last cut-away scene that you watched were are somewhat lengthy. Otherwise, it had me at the edge of my seat the whole time. Next time...need more missions.
