Horrible game, not fun, gets boring quick

I had such high hopes for this game, and it was horrible. Basically, if you love driving very far from point A to B many many times, then this is the game for you. If you like action, and missions that aren't the same kind every time, this this isn't the game for you. It may be cheap right now, but it's still not worth it.The controls are horrible, and the game's difficulty is just driving.

Great for adults, keep the kids away.

First off, parents, this game is NOT FOR KIDS. And really, anyone under 17. This is a crime game set in London. Gangs, murders, drugs, profanity (including the "F-word"), corruption and English accents are plentiful in this game that will bring to mind the gangster films of Guy Ritchie. The first part of the game involves ex gang member Mark Hammond, who's wife has been killed and son kidnapped. The man responsible for the kidnapping forces Mark to go on a series of missions if he ever wants to see his son alive. The second part of the game deals with the storyline of Frank Carter, a cop who'd like to put Charlie Jolson (London's crime kingpin and the man responsible for the kidnapping of Mark's son) and his nephew Jake away. There are plenty of other interesting characters as well, icluding Yasmin, a sexy hitwoman; Nick Collins, leader of the gang Mark left; MacCormack, corrupt chief of police and many others. The voice acting is top notch and the plot is well executed, with a nice little twist halfway through. The graphics are beautifully done and the game itself is a blast to play. One small gripe: The controls take a bit of getting used to, and the camera angle is pretty fixed. But these are small gripes, and the game is worth your hard earned money.

Great, but doesn't deserve 5 stars.

The Getaway is about as fun, and/or more fun than Grand theft Auto 3, or Vice City. The graphics are better, and just like vice city you can shoot out the tires on cars, and coppers lay down spike strips to really slow you down. An improvement though, would have to be that you can shoot windows out, and you can also take your own hostages to protect you from getting shot by a copper. When you grab a hostage you have two choices: Snap his, or her neck, or splatter their brains all over the wall with a gunshot to the head! There is also a lot more blood in this game than any GTA game on the market. The cuss words make GTA Vice City look like it should be rated -E-. They say pretty much every curse word in the book(as if there is a book!)A great feature on the Getaway is that you can replay any mission you want.

Why 4 stars? Well, it gets you stuck on a lot of missions. I was stuck on the 12th mission for a week and a half. I somehow just couldn't kill this guy with a shotgun. Finally I found the strategy.

But besides that, you should definately get your hands on this game. Even if you don't want to do the missions, FREE ROAM MODE is a great extra feature on the game. The Getaway is a silver medal game, that I wouldn't mind giving a gold at all.

RENT IT-BUY IT-DO WHAT EVER YOU HAVE TO DO TO GET YOUR HANDS ON IT, but please dont't steal it...LOL. Thanx! I hope this review helped you.

Should be made into a movie!!!

I bought this game used and overall I've enjoyed it. People keep comparing this game to GTA, but this game is way better. The graphics are good and I love the fact that you really are in london unlike the GTA games which is just in a made up city. This game has a really good story line. It's not all about sex or drugs. It actually has a deep meaning to what is going on in the game. I hate the fact that the video cuts are long and you have to watch it for like 2 minutes before playing the game but when you actually do play a mission it is worth the wait. In the end the game is probably the best game I have ever played. I'm waiting for some hotshot director to make this into a movie cuz it really should be.

Has potential but falls just short...

GAME CONCEPT: You are a large corporation (Sony) and wish to capitalize on the open-ended game concept put forth by Rockstar with their Grand Theft Auto series. You believe that you can be "bigger and better" than GTA by having more foul language, cinematic camera angles (which sometimes hampen game play), and a character who can take hostages. At the same time, you don't have the fortitude and courage to allow the character to autotarget everyone on the streets that the game player may wish to lay their sights on. Also, you put as much distance between yourself (Sony) and the game, as you are afraid of political correctness.

PROS: The storyline is actually pretty good. The acting is also done very well. The method taking cover with walls, firing around corners, etc is also done fairly well. Graphics are superb and the area of London recreated is enormous. Credit should definetly be given to the amount of work this, without doubt, was commited towards building an actual real-world environment in a video game. I thought Hong Kong in "Shenmue II" was incredible, but London in "The Getaway" even exceeds that undertaking.

CONS: Camera angle. You can't pan the camera, it simply follows the character. Its also far too serious. There is very little humor in this game. No compass on the screen and there is no map to refer to. With an area this enormous, a map would've been nice. My main con, however, is how sluggish the vehicles are.

For $20, its worth picking up a copy -- but don't expect it to be as much fun as the open-ended games like GTA. In fact, it would be best not to compare "The Getaway" with GTA. Put it in a catagory of it's own and you may be more pleased.

Overall, there are definetly some things with this game that would be welcomed in the future -- but it needs a little refinement.

Entertaining story, challenging game play.

If you're expecting GTA in London you'll be disappointed, as the gameplay is entirely linear until you complete the game's 24 missions. After that, although you have all of London to drive around in, that's about all you can do - plenty of places to go, but not to go inside.

If, on the other hand, you're looking for an entertaining story, challenging driving and a bit of gun play, it's worth the money. The cut scenes are entertaining and get you involved in the story and do a rather good job of character development, and the gun fights are intense and a bit more realistic than most games.

Pros:
entertaining and well presented story
huge map to drive around in
well designed interiors
intense, more-realistic gun play

Cons:
not enough places to go into and explore
too little variety in vehicles
too little variety of guns
AI not quite intelligent enough

EDIT - It has been a year since I first wrote this review, and I have long since traded this game back in. Although it was very fun the first time through, it has little replay value if any, and driving around in the game gets very boring very quickly. If you are considering buying this game, rent it instead, and if you do like it after that, buy a used copy, there are more than enough that have been traded in.

I reduced my original 4 star rating to a 3 due to the lack of replay value.

Good fun, just don't compare it to GTA VICE

Overall this is a pretty good game if you can deal with the way your health works. When you take damage your suit gets blood stained more and more, so it's hard to know when your almost dead and to regain your health you need to stop and lean on a wall which can take close to 20 or 30 seconds to get back to full health and can get very boring, but there is a cheat code out now to help this. The driving part of the game is very fun and I like how the cars take damage better than I do in GTA,but they should have given you a rear view mirror at least and different points of view.
The shooting parts are good after you get use to the controls and learn how to lean on walls and hide behind cars, but sould have been tweaked alittle better for as long as it has taken to get this game out.
Overall I found this to be very fun, but needs improvements in the way you gain health( the lean on the wall is way to boring) and aim your weapons. The driving parts is where this game shines and the graphics are great. So if you have already beat both of the GTA's and are looking for something to kill time with untill the next on rent this and if you can put up with the little problems then buy it and the price is good too.

Good idea, but...

This game took three years to make, but it has become apparent that in those three years of designing, programming, and testing, control response was not high on the priority list. This could have been a great game! The story is good, the graphics are great, the voice acting is right on, but the controls downright [stink]. There is a level invovling some tricky manuvering through laser detection beams, and the control thwarts you every time. The cars have little distinction in manuverability, although I'll admit they're a little more responsive to the controller than when you're on foot. I would have gladly waited another six to twelve months for Sony to improve the controls on this one. Oh, by the way, London is HUGE, and the road system there [stinks], both in real life and in the game. An on-screen map or even a pack-in map with the game woulda helped a little.

Good Game

Firstly, this game is not for children. It's important to note the M for Mature rating on the game. This will save some parents the shock of noticing their kids playing a game with plenty of cursing and adult situations in it.

Getaway isn't too much of a GTA knockoff. It's simply just a great game idea taken in a different direction. Getaway does get a bit old in spots. There can be too much of a good thing. You drive and then kill and then drive some more only to go kill some more. The controls aren't too dificult to master, but don't always make gameplay easy. There is no rotate character control, which easily could have been done using the right analog stick.

Getaway has good voice acting, great graphics and fun gameplay. Although it can get a bit old in spots (especially if you love GTA) this is definitely a game to rent if not buy.

ALMOST UNPLAYABLE

I will list the reasons why this game doesn't add up. First and foremost, controlling the character (Hammond) is almost impossible. He runs slower than my grandmother, and as he loses health, he runs even slower. He cannot run up or down stairs-- he tends to prance up them-- not kidding. The characters use the F word in every cutscene, which is just stupid. When your player gets in a car, he cannot drive more than 40 mph for some reason, regardless of the type of automobile. You cannot shoot weapons out of cars while you drive, yet other gang members can shoot at you from their cars. In out-of-vehicle gun battles (on foot) auto aim is sluggish and often unreliable. When you get shot, you have to limp to a wall and lean there for 60 seconds to regain health, which gets annoying when gang members are shooting at you. controls are HORRIBLE, and the weapons selection is very limited (shotguns, MP-5's and AK-47s are the most powerful weapons.

ON THE POSITIVE SIDE: The Getaway has incredible graphics and takes place in a virtual London (downtown area) that is almost a replica of the British city. Real brand names exist-- you can see popular fast-food places and clothing stores, which adds a lot of realism. All the major London landmarks are in the game, Buckingham Palace, Trefalgar Square, Big Ben/Parliament, Tower of London/museum, London Eye, etc.. The traffic AI is very impressive, and there are many more cars on the streets than in the popular GTA3 games.

Summary: Graphics and cityscape are very realistic, but the sluggish play control makes the game very annoying.
