Take everything bad about EQI and multiply it

I really enjoyed EQI once upon a time as the first of its kind, and thought that EQII would be the 'next generation' of MMORPGs. Alas, it's like they took everything that was really annoying in EQI and then removed everything fun for EQII. Grinding, camping, lag, poor graphics, horrible loading times, forced grouping ... three times as bad as it ever was in EQI. Then add in the fact you only get three character slots for more money per month and I really have to wonder what they were thinking.

Hardcore EQI fans and powergamers who enjoy camping and grinding will enjoy this game, as it's really just the same as the first but made 'harder' for those that spend every minute of their freetime online.

Stopped playing after 1st free month

What a game.., all the hoopla, what was that all about? I played EQ1 up to a 32 level cleric (Siguard Healmedbuff) and stopped because sheer boredom and the tedious work involved froze me and I flat out gave up...I did enjoy EQ1 up to that point..but my eyes glazed over and even retched..

So here comes EQ2, and I thought maybe it would be different and things would work out better. Nope, I was playing a warrior up to level 15 and I froze and then my eyes glazed over. All the things I hated about EQ1 popped up in EQ2. I couldnt cancel my account quick enough.

Problems:
-laggy/choppy game on a machine that is good enough (p4 1.8 with a ge5700)
-graphics are so-so, the water effects are cool, and some of the outdoor zones are pretty, but the character and mobs graphics when you're running for life are down right funny..pitter patter of little feet. Your legs look like little engine pistons.
-horribly long load zone times..(1-2 min per EACH zone)
-quests are BOoooooooorrrrrrrrrrring..when you get them, you really don't care to do them..
-city layouts SUCKS..how come they make windy meandering paths thru a city so it takes you close to 10-15mins just to cross a city??
-good luck killing anything equal con or +1 level higher. My higher level friend came to help me (Sneaks) and 3 of them spawned right next to us and killed us pretty much instantly.
-crafting is a joke, good luck, you have to level your class AND your craft skill. So if you want to stand around and make baskets all day, go ahead. Not my idea of fun.

Overall, I just found myself bored and the game uninteresting. I jumped to WoW and I've had nothing but fun..actually wondering what I want to do next and actually like working on my crafting skills (people can actually use the stuff you make).

I think the last people to stick with EQ2 just can't bring themself to admit EQ2 is not fun. They are the hardcore people who have dedicated themself to EQ2 as a way of life. Take it from a gamer, pass on this game..

A few things you need to know before trying this game

1 If you have a dial-up connection you will never get the game to run smoothly.

2 You need a 2500 cpu with 1 gig+ of ram and a 256 video card to run with out severe
lag

3 The base monthly fee is $15 but your playing options will be very restricted if you don't get an all access pass for $7 per/month stat tracking $3 per/month an buy the new areas $4 every other month. Bring the real cost to $27 per/month

4 To sell items you find or make to other players you need to stay on-line in spot and do nothing. Most people leave the game running when there are asleep or at work so the can sell there stuff.

5 At about level 20 to make progress in the game you will blocks of at lest 3 hours uninterrupted playing time. At that level there is very little solo content. You will then need to work in a team to level, quest and create items. There are 50 levels.

This game does the best graphic of any game I have ever seen. After that there are no innovations that are unique to this mmopgs. If you have less than 30 hours a week to play per week you might want to skip this.

If you like mmopgs there are a many out there that are a lot more fun.

Well, I'm having fun though

Well, first of all, I'm also one of those who stopped playing the "other" SOE online game due to that "mess" they made, and have a lot to say about that experience. However, I'm having fun playing this game.

One important thing to remember is, this is an online game and they keep adding new contents and fixing the current contents depending on the players' demand. A lot of negative points other reviewers pointed out in their review are already fixed.

For example, they have started "offline sale" feature, so you can keep selling items from your house vault while you are offline. Log in the next day, you get the money(well, of course, game money though) in your pocket. They have added a lot of contents for solo players. I almost never group with anybody, but still can enjoy playing this game in my pace.

Of course, there are some negative points I need to mention here.
1. This game is rather user-unfriendly. Kinda hard to figure out the all cool features it has. You never know unless you go to the forum of their official web site and research yourself. Well, some people might think that that's also a part of fun playing this kind of game;"Keep researching and finding out new stuff", but if they can't introduce those cool features to the new players and they all stop playing before they experience them, then what is the point? I never knew that I was supposed to try examining all the loot items because some of them start the quests. I didn't know how the collection items worked till I "happened" to examine them.
You don't know which NPC give you the quests so you need to keep walking around the town (You have to go through the loading everytime you enter the different zone too) looking for somebody who gives you the quest. This can get frustrating to those players who wish to just keep doing quests after quests.
2. It requires you to upgrade your computer just to play this game. Most of the computers sold in market (as of July 2005) cannot play this game, well, maybe can, but it will be extremely laggy and almost impossible to play. Even after I installed a new video card spending a couple of hundreds dollars, it still lags pretty bad. Of course, graphics are awesome, but what is the point of making a game when it is not accessible to most of the users?

However, I still prefer this game than World of Warcraft. I play both games, but I spend more time on EQ2. Here are the reasons why I don't get hooked on World of Warcraft so much...
1. In World of Warcraft, you just keep doing quests after quests. That is pretty much all you do. You complete one quest, and the qiest giver will give you the next one. You just keep following the path and you will never get lost. But ... well.. I just get tired very quickly when I keep doing this everyday. It started making me feel like I'm forced to walk on the rail that is already laid, everybody is doing the same thing, and that is all you do... Things might start looking a little different once you start joining the raid, but I personally don'y have enough time to dedicate to 1)wait till 30 to 40 people to gather around for the raid, 2)stick around and keep focusing only to the game during the raid (it's almost impossible when you have a toddler playing around you all the time...)
2. The crafting feature is also just like that too. Whatever you make, whoever makes it, all you have to do is click on the "Create" bottun and it produces the same thing. No "prestine" quality for higher-level crafters. Everybody produces the same quality items. I understand that some people think it is rather frustrating when you can't make high quality items when your level is low, but to me, that leads to the motivation to get your crafting skills higher. For a player who especially enjoys crafting, this is not challenging enough.
3. There are Auction Houses in World of Warcraft. You can list the items there for sale. However, there are only THREE aunction houses in the entire game. That is in total. You can only use the one on your alliance side and the universal one, so it's pretty much only two you can use. This is extremely inconvinient. Sometimes it is unaccessible from your starting location, which means, "no Auction House for new players"... This is very discouraging to both buyers and sellers. You can solve this problem by making another character right near the Auction house, but being required to go back to this only one town with auction house gets kinda frustrating.

In Everquest2, I go do some quests and keep killing stuff. I also harvest the crafting ingredients while I'm out there too. After a while, I start getting a little bit tired and feeling like going back to the town and chill for a bit... so I go to crafting space in the town and keep making items, getting my crafting skills higher. Then, before I log out, I just go back to my room and list the items I made for sale... (oh yeah, you are homeless in World of Warcraft, no player house feature in the game currently) Next day I log in and enter my room, then I hear the sound of coins dropping in my purse...This is when I go "YEAH!" lol. Looking for the rare recipes and rare ingredients is pretty hooking too. I must admit that they are currently a little bit too rare and I wish they will add a little fix on that too (I'm sure a lot of players feel the same too) but well, it's still hooking to me.

But above all, please remember that this is ONLINE GAME. This means that they keep adding new contents and keep fixing features. And sometimes it makes you feel unhappy depending on what you are doing on your character. Things I wrote on this review might be changed too.
I always read the reviews before buying any online games, but you have to keep it in mind that they might have changed something by now. Always try to gather the latest information about the game by going to their official website, or just simply search on Google etc.

I give this game 4 stars for "Fun", but as they add more contents in the future, I might change my opinion. I was giving 4 stars to Star Wars Galaxies, but now I must say 0 star after the "Combat Upgrade" they added a little while ago. This kind of things tend to happen in any online game. Even in World of Warcraft, some peole are not happy about the PvP system change they added a while ago.

I always think that reviews are only for the reference. The most ideal way to judge online games is to ask friends who are actually playing the game RIGHT NOW, not the one who used to play months ago.

If you want to solo then why are you playing a MMORPG?

I have been playing the game for two months now, gameplay has been well addressed in the other reviews so I will only focus on a few aspects.

1. Yes you need a group to complete some quests, the game forces you to meet, socialize, and work with others. Of course isnt that the reason we play MMORPG's? The big draw to these games is to allow you to play with others, and EQ2 does a great job allowing, if maybe encouraging, you to do this. There are great customization features that allow you to outfit and fill your own, or clan, house with great quest items and furniture.

2. SOE has been a great experience for me, if anyone wants to know what bad customer service is go play a NC soft game like Lineage 2 or COH!

3. Graphics are great, in so many games all the items that you get in the game are worn but not seen in game. With EQ2 when you equip something you see it on you, EQ2 does a great job of allowing you to personalize your character with limitless body creation options, clothing, and titles.

4. There is almost no farming, quest creatures and areas are readily available. There is no kill stealing or player killing, the lock out feature for battles is a great and innovative idea!

5 Quest items DO match their quest level, rewards are worth it!!!! Yes, if you invest your money wisely you can buy upgraded items from other players, but for casual players the quest items are a great way to power up!

6. And the biggest draw for me, is there are thousands of quests, hence the title ever quest. Some quests can be done in 5 minutes others in days, others in months. The quest allow you to get a sense of accomplishment in whatever suits your fancy that day. Its good to grab some XP doing a short quest while youre in town, but it feels great to finish a quest that took a week to complete, especially since the rewards are a good match to the quests.

The cons for the game are the chat dialog box is hard to configure to a point that it is comfortable during game play. Gameplay slows as you get above 20, but I think this will be addressed as updates are released. And most of all, there are only two cities (many neighborhoods i the cities), if you are a high level character you have to make quite a journey to your fighting area everytime you need supplies or to deposit drops. Most of these issues will be resolved with updates so I would highly recommend the game to anyone willing to interact with others online.

If you want to solo all the time, don't bother playing a MMOrpg, the MMO means you want to play with other people!

EQ 2 - Not for everyone - especially if you have a laptop

I just bought this game, and was rudely told by the Sony tech support person that they don't expect these games to run on laptops and they don't support them. I have a brand new compaq laptop (Athlon 64 chip, 768mb ram, and an nVidia GeForce 4 Go 64 mbyte card in it), and it won't play.

If you read the fine print, it says the card must support vertex and pixel shaders - a hardware feature that is not upgradeable. I didn't know what the heck those things were until calling sony tech support.

However after playing this game now both in beta and upon opening on my desktop, I don't think I'm missing anything. The graphics are dull and uninspired. The characters look plastic and are proportioned oddly. My male wood elf looks like a woman, with sloping shoulders and big hips. The gameplay also seems needlessly complicated and repetitive.

Terrible Game

So I started playing this game in December. Wow I wish I had not. I used to play the original EQ and loved it. It was a great escape or atleast adventure from the daily toil. However this game is nothing but work and I do not recommend it for those who get stressed easily and are looking to relax.

First of all as a 50 alcheimst the crafting system is boring
and I dare say not innovative. There is nothing cool about the way this bs stuff works.

When you read certain comments and changes from the devs you
wonder if they even think your time is worth something.

Adventuring is way cooler then crafting and adventuring is like
watching paint dry on the wall. :)

So do yourself a wonderful favor, don't buy this game:)

Amazing, this is after playing real game for a week.

This game rocks ! The Graphics are amazing ! The stories are Awesome, the NPC's actually talk to you with sound, I actually rode a Griffin around the commonlands, just amazing, --water, sky, Charactors, everything looks amazing, some MOB's after you kil them scream chiberish at you and stuff, soooo many things, it would be hard to write it all in 1000 pages, Only having two cities is very cool, it does not slow anything down, each city has many subburbs, this game is Huge !! My only complaint is that I palyed EQ 1 for 4 years, the graphics where getting very dated, with all the new amazing graphics, it takes at least 1GB of Ram to really enjoy the game, and I also recommend 256 video memmory, I have both and stil have only half the graphics turned on, that aside this GAME is amazing, been playing it, instead of {EDIT}, which i bought at same time, all week, amazing quests, neverending quests.... must see and play to fully understand !
Enjoy this amazing World .........

Positives & Negatives

Everquest II is little more than an average RPG. There is very little innovation and the design of the game's interface leaves a lot to be desired. But, it isn't all bad.

Positives:
* Music. The music is fantastic.
* NPCs. Speaking with an NPC isn't boring anymore. The voice acting is wonderful in this game.
* Servers designated as "Role Playing." Yes, this isn't new. But, many MMOs out there don't take this into account. EQ2 does.
* Customization of a character's look. Could have provided more here, but it is still nice.
* Monster variety. By level 5 I had encountered spiders, gnomes, orcs, wolves, deer, sharks, snakes, etc. This was a pleasent surprise. I don't expect this will be like {EDITED}, where I'm still fighting bunnies at level 32.
* STATION.COM - Wow! The free online service from Sony keeps track of your character's profile, stats, and uploaded screen shots on a web page. This is the one real innovation feature of the game. A web site for your in-game character. Nice!

Negatives:
* Interface! Ever since {EDITED}, players expect more. The game play interface design is horrible and a literal throw-back to confusing RPGs of the past. Trying to figure out how to play the game shouldn't get in the way of playing the game. Terrible design.
* Party Searching. Though they did steal some of the innovations from {EDITED}, they didn't go far enough.
* Chat window customization stinks. Talking with other people in the game is difficult, especially if you are used to the {EDITED} design.
* Graphics are nothing revolutionary. Saw the same thing 5 years ago with {EDITED}. Shimmering water. Blades of grass moving in the wind. And, {EDITED} still did a better job.
* Character customization doesn't start at level 1. In other words, they give you spells and abilities - you don't choose them at low levels. So, everyone is the same. Boring.

Is it worth $? Maybe. Should you wait for {EDITED}? Probably. Will it survive? Only if they make some major changes, especially to the interface. Current games like {EDITED} cater to casual gamers and will eventually kill the EQ line.
