Excellent CRPG (i.e. Not for the Diablo/Dungeon Siege gamer)

I would like to first start by saying that if you like your roleplaying games to have a straight-forward clear path to follow, this is not your game. Additionally, if you like the simple gameplay aspects of Diablo or Dungeon Siege, do not bother purchasing Morrowind.

The best example I can come up with is this:
It's a beautiful, one-person EverQuest, except with interesting quests and gameplay.

I say this because the game is more of a virtual environment that allows you to go where you wish and accomplish quests in your own way. There is a "general" direction given for the main quest, but it is very easy to get into the quests from the various guilds in the game. This can be a little intimidating for those used to being "led" with specific directions. At first, I was overwhelmed with the sheer number of things I wished to accomplish.

Initial impressions of this game:

It's a detailed RPG, with plenty of options for character building, lots of little touches in the gameworld. Things that I didn't particularly go for were the arcade combat model, and for some reason the character/npc models were just plain ugly in some cases. I don't think they were intended to be ugly, but somehow just look rough. The high elves, wood elves, and dark elves are good examples.

As opposed to those ugly models, the environment looks great. The atmospheric effects are particularly well-done, as well as water surfaces. Overall, the game is worth playing.

Everything I ever wanted in an RPG but was afraid to ask for

This is a stellar computer adventure/RPG game. Caveat: it is stellar for MY tastes ;). The player chooses a race (from a list of about nine: 3 elven, 2 non-humanoid, perhaps 4 human), gender, appearance and profession (a wide variety, with the ability to custom-tailor the profession if you want). Your character starts by being bailed out of prison (for what crime?) by the emperor himself, given a set of instructions, then set loose to hide, fight, go rogue, or obediently carry out the orders. Viewpoint is 3-D first person--and while I don't normally care for 3-D, the artists have been inspired! They shaped the flavor and texture of the world by playing on the planes of the 3-D images. The player is presented with a great deal of leeway to do things the way s/he desires. Tomes of history, philosophy, theology (even riddles) are available in-game to aid the player in understanding the world and its peoples. Tools are available to try out a bit of creating yourself. This is definitely not just a hack'n'slash; a great deal of thought was put into this world and you can get out of it as much as you want to put in.

I have to say that this game takes the cake when it comes to RPG's. I've played many in my life time but this one is very interesting and complex. Actually, it is only as complex as you make it. The game does hold your hand somewhat but the freedom really comes from just ignoring the main quest and jumping right into exploring all over!

I expected a little more depth when it came to factions and such. It seems you can buy anyones attention in the game. It isn't as evolving as I had though. I became the Master of the Thief Guild and it didn't take me but 2 days to do it. And even then I didn't feel like I was anyone important! lol All the quests are great though, even the main one (being the toughest of course) and isn't the typical "talk to this guy then talk to that guy etc" type quests. They could of made the journal system removed quests when you finished them because really... there is WAY too many quests I end up starting then forgetting about them because I find another while in the process of completing an old one!

Anyway, all in all... Great Game. Get it if you want to lose yourself (or your marriage) and dive into a real fantasy world!

PC Role-Playing Games have come a long way since the beginning of the Ultima seriest (et al). For the longest time, from beginning to end you followed the designers' script and plotline and any deviation from it usually meant that bad things were going to happen.

Morrowind is, thus far, the ultimate in non-linear computer RPGs. There IS a main plotline for you to participate in that is of the designers' creation...but it is possible to play this game forever without so much as participating in this plotline and delving into one of the MANY sub-plots of the game. You want to do your own thing and touch on this plotline when you feel like it? This is your game.

Your character can be anything you want it to be. The major divisions in character types are: Combat, Stealth, and Magic. These are just very basic archetypes. You can take one of their pre-made classes or completely customize your own. Want a caster who is an expert with an axe? Sure. Want a warrior in the heaviest of armors who can turn himself invisible? Go ahead. The only thing to take into consideration in this game is that there is no real way to avoid all combat (melee or magical). Your character can't be a pacifist. Beyond that, your character is whatever you want it to be.

Always something to do here - NEVER a boring moment. Wander a bit and you'll bump into a crypt or a dungeon. Or join a Guild or House and get missions (sub-plots) to participate in that way. Join several Guilds if you like. Just be aware that one Guild's mission might conflict with another. This game is SO much more than the central plotline, a statement which cannot be made about just any game.

So if you're a PC RPG enthusiast, if you like fantasy games but don't want run-of-the-mill you'll love Morrowind.

It's just so open ended...

Morrowind, is an amazing game. You can follow a complex storyline or do whatever you want, roam the continent killing bandits, completing quests, or you can even be a murderer killing anyone you want and hiding from the law. Your choices are limitless.

The graphics aren't half bad either. ;-) In fact their quite good, you can even customize everything, create your own new races or weapons import graphics from 3DSMAX.

Overall it's a must play if you enjoy RPGs, or even if you don't....

A Breathtaking game. But so much more...

I first heard of Morrowind when the game was reviewed on Cartoon Networks Toonamie. They said it was the largest RPG game ever. I'm not a RPG player, but Morrowind certainly is a fastsinating and entertaining game to get involved in. Instead of following the goal that the character is given, I go off to do what I want. Loads of fun. "Try smacking one of the guards" Woot. Experimenting by going off on whatever route you want is the absolutely best feature this game has to offer! I haven't tried yet, but one can build their own worlds I've been told. Thats another feature of Morrowind I have yet to get into. But I will.
Give this game a chance, and allow oodles of playing time. You'll need it.

An epic RPG in depth and design.

This game is truly a tribute to the spirit of the RPG genera.
This has to be one of the greatest video game experiences ever created. It honestly feels like your entering an online persistent world. The level of detail, and depth this game delivers is amazing. Every time I sit down to play this game it actually feels like and adventure. If you enjoy open ended challenging game play this would be a perfect fit.
I would say this is not for the instant gratification crowd. The story and game play offered by this title is incredibly rich and immersive. This is a tribute to the spirit of the RPG genera.

At last! A world to explore

Morrowind reviews caught my eye early on, and I decided it would be my next purchase. It is without a doubt the best RPG game I have ever come across. No longer are you limited to a set series of quests or certain areas of the map. Morrowind is a world in which you can find a place wherever and however you choose. Your character is completely definable with a unique skill table (major, minor and misc) as well as standard attributes which govern the skills.

The only problem I have with the game is the non-levelled creatures that become easy to kill after a while, but this is something that has been attended to in the add-on expansion pack Tribunal, as well as the new pack Bloodmoon.

The game includes the Construction Kit for you to create your own quests, items, characters - basically anything you want to do. And the vast Morrowind community have come up with some brilliant modules which you can download, making the game even more interesting.

Game play is controlled by reaction, so you can play the game over and over, and not see the same things happen in the same way. You can decide to join factions and get involved in the politics, or you can skip it all and wander around the world seeking out the legendary magic items.

Considering the very few minor problems I have had with hardware (as long as you don't expect to leave the viewing distance at max, no problems with graphics,) and the re-playability of this game, as well as all the available add-ons, it has definitely been the best gaming investment I have made... Try it....and say goodbye to the real world! 80hrs+ just on the standard quests!

Nice job

The game flows well from the prior Morrowind basic and Tribunal expansion games. Be warned, if you are not high level, groups of monsters will surround you in the wild and kill you. I played with a character with over 1,000 health and I took 700 - 800 many times in random combat. For all that, you would think you would be rewarded with even greater weapons and armor. Forget it. If you have explored the mainland a lot, and I have, then you already have better items than you will find in Bloodmoon. There are a few items from Tribunal that I have kept, but none from Bloodmoon. I admit, I have not completed the game. I am trapped on one of the quests that I cannot get past because of a glitch in the game. Hopefully, there is a patch. If there is, I'll up the game to five stars.
