Go back to the old formula

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 23 / 30

I have always been a huge fan of the Tony Hawk series of video games, ever since the original Tony Hawk's Pro Skater (THPS). I have seen many improvements to the original formula over the past five years, but the last couple of games in the series have been disappointing. For me, the high point of the series was THPS 4. It had a ton of challenging goals, awesome levels, and is the one game in the series that I will pull out if I just want to goof around.

THUG 2, on the other hand, is a shorter game (I beat story mode on normal difficulty in one weekend in between midterm study sessions), has relatively forgettable levels, and shamelessly promotes antisocial behavior. To add to the depth of the game, a classic career mode was added, with the two minute timer and classic goals such as collect S-K-A-T-E, pro scores, and hidden video tapes, all within the same levels as story mode. Nice idea, but I always hated that stupid two minute timer.

I still feel that I can give THUG 2 a pretty good rating because it still had the same addicting gameplay as other games in the series and they added a new "focus mode," which allows you to switch to bullet-time in special mode, giving you better control. It was also kind of a cool addition to give you a pro teammate and two special guest skaters for each level, each with their own unique goals. One of the special guests in each level had a different type of ride, like a go-kart or a motorized wheelchair. Nice idea, but I hated the control on some of these rides, especially Steve-O's mechanical bull.

Bottom line: This game is too short and not as fun as some of the other games in the series. There were only 6 new levels (I believe) with a few classic levels added in. Trying to play through on "sick" difficulty mode may add to the replay value, but you're still playing the same goals, just more frustrating.

A LONG step backwards in the Tony Hawk series

This game is absolutely awful, I would actually rather study than play it. It's one of the worst pieces of trash I've played in a long time & I'm an AVID Tony Hawk supporter (until now that is).

First of all, 2/3 of the skaters that have been with the game from the beginning are gone, only the most mainstream skaters made the cut. OG skaters like Rowley, Reynolds, and JT have been replaced by the likes of Steve-O, Jesse James, & even Bigfoot.

Second, the storyline has essentially turned the game into an episode of "Viva La Bam". Half of the goals don't involve skating of any type and simply play on the "skateboarding-is-punk-so-we-destroy-things-'cuz-that's-the-cool-skater-thing-to-do" mantra that seems to be pervading the youth skate culture. If you've skated for any length of time this comes off as a desperate & pathetic attempt to make some money off a crappy game that caters to all the 13 year olds who think Bam Margera is the greatest.

Lastly, as if the pop culture influence that permeates the gameplay isn't insulting enough, there is A video at the end. No, not 1 video per pro, A video featuring all of them. They each throw 3 moves & it's over.

When the Tony Hawk series began the games actually influenced pop culture; now they're doing just the opposite & letting what's trendy dictate the direction of the games. I used to buy all the sequels without question, but after seeing the previews for this game I decided to rent it first (thank goodness I did). You could do a lot better with $50 than buy this game; like buy some real skateboard gear.

Another in a Series of Great Skateborading Games

THUG 2, another in a series of mindless, yet entertaining skateboarding games, brings to life a new breed of Tony Hawk magic, total and complete mayhem.
Tony Hawk's Underground 2 is the sixth edition of the world's most famous and best selling skateboarding games, and like it's predecessers, along with some new editions to the gameplay and graphics, creates a totally new story, one involing Bam Magera, a master of destruction and confusion. Even the gamers of little knowledge about the world of skateboarding could enjoy this game, a game in which, despite abandoning the old goal of becoming a legendary skateboarder, holds true to the Tony Hawk spirit, and despite some minor flaws, could easily entertain fans of most ages for many hours on end.
The story begins with you, a skater, being chosen to participate in what is known as a World Destruction Tour, involving two teams, headed by two men, Hawk and Magera. You must travel around with your team across the globe, from Germany to Spain to Australia, to create as much destruction and mayhem as you can, while also, along the way, riding crazy vehicles with a variety of guests, doing outrageous stunts, and of course, putting up your mark in graffitti anywhere you want.
Maybe you enjoy the classic Hawk games, the games like Tony Hawk 1, 2, and 3, where you simply skate around freely and at your own will, doing simple, yet challenging goals, unlocking levels, and building up your skater to become the best of the best. This partof the game, known as "Classic Mode," is just as fun as the story mode, allowing you to play in both new and old school levels, and even a secret level at the end, in which, if completed successfully, unlocks a variety of new skaters and videos for you to enjoy.
The game barely misses a perfect score from this avid PS2er, simply because of a few minor flaws. The first of which is the varying degrees of difficulty in the modes. Before starting a game you are asked what difficulty you want, and even though you may of chose easy or normal, you still get very complex and difficult goals, and ones in which may seem close to impossible to complete. Other times, though, you recieve goals that are so easy that they are completed in a matter of seconds and without much thought or strategy, though for some of you this may not necessarily be a bad thing.
This game, even if you don't enjoy skateboarding, should at least be rented, and played, for you may soon find yourselves outside on your own, trying to perfect your own version of the Hawk kickflip.
Note: This game is not for younger children as it does involve some very crude and sexual humor, including the throwing of beads at women in the streets during Mardi Gras, thus resulting in...well...take a lucky guess. For parents monitor your child's use of the game, and maybe, despite the rating of Teen (ages 13+), wait a little while before allowing your son or daughter to partake in the playing of this somewhat suggestive game.

THUG vs THUG 2.... A Tough Match!

Well, this game was great, my 2nd favorite in the THUG/THPS series. Of course, my favorite is THUG. They're some great improvements, such as new levels (including Australia and Berlin), new characters (including Ryan Sheckler, Shrek, and Phil Margera), and a brand new storyline. You, Eric Sparrow, and some other great pros are kidnapped and thrown in a van. The van unloads, and the story begins. Team Bam and Team Hawk are on an adventure called The World Destruction Tour. Six continents filled with tons of way you can, well, cause destruction! In every level, there's a guest skater and a secret skater. The guest skater, once you find them, are now yours to skate as whenever you want. The secret skater has a vehicle which you can ride in to cause even more destruction and maddness, but stays in the level you found them in. Overall, the Story Mode is short. It took me less than 24 hours to beat it on Easy. But there is also, new to THUG2, a classic mode. Play like THPS games, with a 2-minute time limit, and try to get a High Score, Pro Score, Sick Score, collect Skate, Combo, and more! Plus, you can unlock more than 5 new levels in Classic Mode that you can't unlock anywhere else, like Old Skool levels including THPS3 Airport, THPS School, and more! Oh yeah, and if you like Old Skool levels, you'll be pleased to hear the first level in Story Mode is an expanded version of the THPS Warehouse! Basically, buy this game even though the Story Mode is short, there's plenty more to do!

The biggest dissapointment of 04

Ok heres the news on THUG 2 and a comparison to THUG 1. This game was a severe dissapointment I can't believe how much better THUG 1 was. I have beaten all of the games in the tony hawk series but I just couldn't will myself into playing this for more than a half hour. The primary flaw in this game is the story mode (or lack there of). The story mode starts completely randomly and has very little meaning due to the lack of cut scenes and poor concept. It starts by you getting kidnapped sounds intriging right? Wrong! The next cut scene shows bam and tony standing over you and tell you that for no reason at all they want to go on a world destruction tour. Ok the concepts still got you hooked but not for long. So you head off to a get acquainted level and then to BOSTON. Thats still just fine with me I'm still slightly interested. Now this is where the boat sinks.m Youre skater has a list of goals that have absolutely no meaning at all. Go find this Guy in the level. What kind of mission id that and how does that relate to freakin skating. Other missions are very similar in the fact that they don't relate to skating. These missions are designed to be destructive and punk-like yet their just not entertaing. One of the new features is being able to switch characters on the run but they are often hard to unlock and their id a new set of goals with each character. Even if you liked the idea of switching characters it's impossible to switch and then switch back because you have to find a specific spot where your skaters are stationed and they are completely random. When you complete a level there bassicly is no significance to the following cut scene it just tells you about the next level. All the theatrical elements in the plot of THUG just dissapeer in THUG2 and I can't understand why. There is no reason to be doing what your doing theres no rival because you have to keep switching teams and the levels are horrible compared to THUG. The only reason to by this game would be for classic mode which follows the THPS format and is still fun. I've been playing Tony hawk games since the original in 98 and have loved them all. I absolutely adored THUGS concept and was able to complete that game in under 24 hours while loving every seconed of it.This is just not the way to follow up a game of the year Neversoft as a fan I'm upset with the lack of creativity. The comparison is pathetic but I'll give you my opinion of the score card anyway.

this game is awsome!!the story mode is a bit longer, create a skater is alot better and you can even pick from 4 voises for your character, the story line is halarius and you can do a new move called focus which makes every thing in slow motion so that your big combo well be much easier, the characters in this game seem to be a bit smallified though. and in story mode you can pick up apples, tomatoes, sray cans, and smoke bombs and throw them at people!and it includes cooler songs from disturbed, matallica and the doors

HOW do they do it?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tony Hawk defines the phrase "old school" in the realm of professional skating-his accomplishments and exploits are legendary. Hawk's notoriety is also attributed to the franchise of video games that bear his name, and it's very appropriate that his latest, Tony Hawk Underground 2, is in its own rights "old school," thanks to its solid, familiar gameplay and the inclusion of Classic Mode. Okay, before getting nostalgic and teary-eyed, THUG 2 isn't a rehash of Pro Skater's glory days, quite the contrary-it's a wild two team, six-city romp around the world as you create a persona and shred it up with the Birdman, Bam Margera, and a motley crew of skating degenerates in the World Destruction Tour. The gist of the WDT is simple: accumulate points by completing an exhausting list of objectives to unlock other parts of the globe. Along the way, playable special guests like hot-rodder Jesse James and a host of skating pros lend a hand, board, or customized ride to further help your team's cause. As with THUG, the environments are pretty expansive and there's no time limit, leaving you free to map out the level and systematically complete the prescribed tasks. However, there's nothing in THUG 2 that should surprise anyone remotely familiar with the gameplay: see it, skate it, thrash it, or bash it-we're talking places and people. Like the Hawks before it, THUG 2 introduces new control features that up the ante on the already exciting action, the most significant being Focus Control. Once activated, all the action is slowed to a virtual crawl, enabling you to combo the more complex tricks and aid in completing goals that require miraculous tightrope-type grinds. Also in the mix is the Freak Out move, which lets you start a combo by throwing a tantrum after eating asphalt. The Story mode and unparalleled customization features aside, such as the new Create-a-Graphic feature and the ability to implement your face into the game via the PlayStation 2 EyeToy (sorry Xboxers), THUG 2 also includes Classic Mode-yep, the two-minute timer and the all-time favorite goals like spelling S-K-A-T-E and finding the secret tape are back! In addition to the levels found within the game, there are also a host of levels from the previous Pro Skater games to make you feel all warm and cozy inside. Three words: outstanding replay value! Technically, THUG 2 is an exceptional game thanks to great sound, which includes a topnotch soundtrack; outstanding controls; and, aside from some awkward clipping, crisp graphics. Both the Xbox and PS2 versions compare favorably in every department and the only advantage at all lies with the PS2 version, but only because of its online components. If there's a reason to get excited about the franchise again, THUG 2 is definitely it. The Story Mode is decidedly different in that it doesn't feel like a rehash of THUG and the inclusion of Classic Mode is brilliant-that's without accounting for the expansive customizable and multiplayer options. Simply put, this game is skating nirvana.

Best Game I've Got

Best game i've got and i've got a lot. Be a bunch of pro skaters (i like WEEMAN and Ryan Sheckler) or make your own skater. make cool parks and design your spray paint. Make your skater a girl or boy.
Pros. Lots of action and it never gets boring.
Cons. You can use one created skater at a time.

Buy this game you won't regret it.

Beat the game and get Shrek.

THPS6 is the best of the series

Street skating is raw, dirty, and vulgar. Skaters get hurt, damage public property, and upset the status quo. At the same time, it is an evolving sport that promotes individualism. Of all the skateboard video games that have been published, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater/Underground remains the undisputed best.

If you have not played any Tony Hawk game before, this is the only one you need. It has incorporated all of the best elements of the previous 5 games into one, as well as the best elements of skateboarding.

If you have played any of the previous 5 games and are wondering whether or not its worth it to buy another one, have no fear. All hype aside, you get the following new features: power slides, Natas spins, slo-mo focus combos, back/front flips, bs/fs rolls, grafitti tags (customized!), player switch option (pros and specials). The graphics have improved significantly, with time-of-day change that triggers city lights on and off.

Honestly, I may never play the previous 5 again because this one is so good!

Very Fun

I think this games very fun, but I think the earlier versions
of Tony Hawk were much easier and better. How come the goals are
harder in this game, thanks.
