Not an improvement :-(

I truly enjoyed the original version -- I did NOT enjoy this one. Basically, it's the same game as the original, repainted in a different color. You get more of the same stuff, except it includes adaptations to other cultures. Other than this, swordsmen still do what swordsmen did before, likewise with archers, catapults, priests, etc. The farmers are just as annoying to manage as they used to be. There are some **minor** cute additions, but for the most part, IT'S THE SAME OLD STUFF. Worse: I used to be able to play at different levels with the original game -- I cannot with this one. I get clobbered in short order regardless of what I try to do. Strategic hints? None to be found... Forget diplomacy -- that didn't work either. No idea at this point how to play at at "Moderate" (read: Impossible) level. The "Standard" level is (as expected) not much of challenge and becomes boring pretty fast. Sure, there's gotta be some strategic silver bullet to play at Moderate level, but at this point I'm frustrated enough and thoroughly underwhelmed with AoE #2 + Conquerors to bother figuring it out. It's straight to eBay as far as I am concerned. BH.

More of the same...

If you are interested in additional structured missions, like those in the standard verion of AOE 2, then this is a great game for you. I didn't find it incredibly worthwhile to play these additional missions.

What's so new???

I have played Ages of Empire II: The Age of Kings, over and over again. I was getting kind of bored with it so I thought the expansion would be great. What's so new??? Not much that I could see. I'm the non-conquerer type who likes to get the relics or the wonder so I found nothing new. Definately nothing worth paying for the expansion. Maybe if you are a battle kind of player it might be different.

Interesting but with some minor flaws.

I enjoy AOE2, and the expansion pack is a fun addition. Of particular note are the new building styles and civilization-unique research advances, a logical step from the civilization-unique units. New civilizations provide one the power to greatly strengthen ground units or even settlers, and new areas provide lush backdrops to savage clashes. Smarter A.I. and new research advances means your priests don't waste all their conversion power working on the same person, settlers don't stand around piles of gold like idiots until you tell them to get to work, you don't have to constantly rebuild farms by hand, and well-outfitted light cavalry actually make fairly effective units.

One major gripe I have from AOE:2 remains: units in formation allocate themselves against enemies in a very foolish fashion; often chasing the lead unit while others attack them, or wandering around the outskirts of fights attempting to get to a unit in the center, while being attacked themselves. Unless told by the player to attack a certain unit, units should always at least stop to defend themselves (a similar bug occurs when you catch an enemy army en route and can just beat on them the entire way w/o reprisal). Another wise option would a 'priority' option, like having units drop everything they're doing to attack approaching onagers and priests. Likewise, the new manual states that your own onagers will attempt to avoid firing into areas where your own troops may be injured; I have found this to be incorrect. Indeed, they still seem to relish lobbing attacks at wandering horsemen into clusters of my own workers. In addition, converted units should upgrade normally as part of your army, instead of staying rooted in the Dark Ages or whenever. Lastly, and perhaps most bizarrely, the expansion pack deleted infantry options from grouped units; I cannot create formations or order units to hold ground, stay grouped etc. It may be unique to my system, but it is nonetheless a serious problem, particularly in comparison with the previous system. I can't even use the skull button to kill off frivolous or converted units. Go to a different portion of the map for even a moment and standing armies will run off after a passing horsemen and get killed by castles. All in all, the expansion pack is great fun with lots of upgrades to the prior controls, but it seems to have missed some glaring ones.

Fun, to say the least!!

The Conquerors is a great expansion. With five new civilizations, new units, better game play... its just more fun. The reason I rated it 4 stars instead of five stars is because I think they still could have done more. yes, the new civilizations and units make the game more fun but its still the same game. Even though I took a star off the rating I would still buy this product. The age of empires: the conquerors is a great expanision, it makes the game more fun. heck, thats what expanisions are for arent they?

good game

I have been playing this game since 4 months and its a great game. This game is nothing but reality.

First of all you have to start from the core. You will be given few villagers and a town center. You need to assign the villagers to collect food, gold, wood and stone. Collecting the food helps you in creating more villagers who build houses, castles, do farming etc. The new villagers come from the town center. Wood is needed to build houses and some other military equipment. When you fall short of food or stone you can buy them by exchanging the gold from the market. Stone is used to construct castles and gates for your empire.

when you start the game you will be in the Dark age, where you have to gather the minimum requirements like farm and houses to the villagers. You can build barracks from where the army comes.

In the next age (Feudal age)you need to build a market where the exchange can be done and a black smith. These are known as feudal age buildings, you need to build atleast 2 feudal age buildings to go in to the next age.
You can even build an archery or a stable. Bowman and other archers come from the archery and horsemen and other cavalry come from the stable. You need to start building your militray units slowly. If you are playing in a map where there is water you can build a dock to produce food boats and war ships.

In the next age which is known as castle age you need to build a castle and an university. The castle acts as a protection. If an enemy comes near it he will be shot with the arrows. You need to do lot of researches in the black smith and university to upgrade your army units.
The more researches you do the more powerful your army units become. You need to build a monastry in this age, the monks come from the monastry. These monks are helpful in getting the relics which yield a lot of gold and they also help in healing your wounded military units and villagers. They can even convert the enemy villagers and military units in to yours, but you need to do some researches.

The final level is the imperial age where you attack the enemies with your army which includes trebuchets (these are specially designed for damaging the castles), bowman, cavalry units and other swordsmen and expand your empire.

The speciality of this game is you are given several civilizations. Each civilization has its own specialities. Like in BRITONS civilization the long bowmen are unique, the aztecs are famous with their eagle warriors etc. You can choose whatever civilization you want before starting the game.

One more good feature of this game is, the villagers are given independence, for example if a villager has finished collecting stone at one place, he automatically moves in to another place to collect the stone.

Thus overall this game is an excellent game. You dunno the time while playing this game.

Let's get this out of the way first: Age of Empires 2 was an excellent game that didn't need much in the way of an expansion pak. However, the Conquerors adds new features and races and cleans up the interface. It also polishes up the few blemishes on the original game (like the constant need to reseed farms manually). Overall, this was not a dramatic overhaul to AOE2, but then again it didn't need to be. Given the price this is a smart purchase if you own AOE2, just don't expect a whole new game.

Great Expansion but it could have a little more

AOE is the best series of games on the face of this earth. Unless your from mars where they have 3D interactive VR then don't argue with me. The game expands with 5 more campaigns with 5 new civs: HUNS AZTECS MAYANS KOREANS SPANISH. Plus adds about 8 new maps, like my favorite "arena". The game is a great expansion if you like campaigns but it dosent bring barely any new units or abilities. Other than that this game is a winner.

If you have AOEII (you need this to run the game) andyou liked it then definitely get this expanstion.

All Hail the king of the Losers!

Actually 4 and a 1/2 Stars

I recently played the demo of this and liked it so much i bought Age of Empires 2 and the Expansion. The new civilizations and new stuff make the game even better than it was. After playing this for a week or two i went back to playing Starcraft and found it a little boring compared to this. The most addictive part of this game is building up over the different time periods. I only have two very small problems with this game, that if they were improved would make this the greatest game. Problem #1 the AI opponent in random games gives up way too easy and resigns way too quick from a battle. After spending an hour or two building up you don't want the climax up the fight to end in a resign in five minutes. It's like a great movie with a horrible ending. I want to completely demolish every little building of the enemy's till nothing of thiers exists on the map at all. This is still a great game can't wait to see what the next Age of Empires brings. The only other minor thing keeping me from giving it five stars is the different civilizations are still way too much alike, i wish they were just a bit more unique, more unique weapons, armies, buildings, etc..would be great. This game is completely addicting, and the expansion just greatly improves on that. Matter of fact once you've played the expansion there's really no going back to playing without it.

Great Game!

Overall, a great game. AOK is one of the games involving the most stratagy ever. AOK touches on most of the aspects of all Real Time Stratagy games, such as resource management (4 different types of resources) and possesses elaborate battle-related units and formation, giving you a comforting amount of freedom in terms of ordering your units around. However, there are a few flaws that take a little away from the game, but not enough not to buy it. The first isn't exactly a flaw, just something to take note of. There are like 20 different teams, each very similar, but different as well. Everyone can get the same type of units, just some teams can't get these units, and so on, so the differences and uniquenesses of the different teams doesn't vary that much. Also, each team has only one special unit that absolutely no one else can get. Also, you had better have a good memory because you have to memorize every little thing about every little unit if you want to do well. (And there are a lot of units.) For instance, almost every fighting unit has some sort of bonus or another against other units. So, for example, Skirmishers have a bonus against other archers, Samari have a bonus against other special units, etc. It's an easy game to play, but a hard game to play well. I can now fully enjoy it because I have memorized everything, such as each unit's hit points, attack, and most important, range. Without learning this fast you have to spend hours comparing ranges of yours guys to their guys to see if you can out-range them, and if you can't, if you have a strong enough guy to beat up the guy you're trying to out-range, and if your guy has any bonuses against the type of guy you're going against, and if that will sway the battle, and then if there's multiple different types of guys you have and multiple types of guys they have, and if there's any of yours or their buildings near by.... You can get a feel for the amount of almost "Work" this game is to play well. Many people are content to sit back and gather resources and build one unit an hour and say they like it because it's easy and then wonder why they aren't doing well. Well. Second, buildings burn if they get to a certain health level regardless of what unit you're using. So if you're attacking someone's farm with a guy with a sword, when the farm's health gets down enough it will start burning. Also, the fire doesn't do anything, it's just for show. In other games like Starcraft when buildings started to burn they would slowly loose health, but in AOK fire doesn't do anyting. Also, I've heard from an unreliable source that the graphics from Age of Empires : The Rise of Rome were far superior to that of Age of Kings. I do admit, the graphics are rather lacking when it comes to if you want better graphics, or if you want to be able to see your units. With the resolution set on 640 by 480 one building takes up the whole screen, and still the graphics aren't that good. You change it to 800 by 600 but then the graphics are even worse. Graphics in games like Red Alert 2 or The Moon Project are 10 and 50 times better (respectivly) than AOK, and they are both stratagy games, although there isn't much stratagy in Red Alert 2. I keep convincing myself this game is worse and worse. I think I really should have rated it a 3 star.
