Unlimited Saga is the most dissapointing RPG i've ever played. The combat system could have been nice but the designers decided to make it too fast and ultimately impossible. Using spinning wheels to complete ANYTHING makes this game into a crummy slot machine game. Strategy should be about timing but this is frustratingly difficult. You couldn't pay me to play this game again. I wish I had never bought this game. A waste of $. This game doesn't even deserve 1 STAR.

Could cause violence against PS2 system..proceed with caution!!

OMG I made the mistake of buying this game. How awful Square. How COULD YOU!? Let me count the ways:

Visually, Unlimited SaGa characters & backgrounds aren't animated--everything is entirely static. The only place you get anything resembling modern graphics is in the battle sequences, which feature sprite-based characters and rudimentary 3D backgrounds. So if you like the game's art style, you'll probably enjoy looking at it for a little while, but if you're looking for more-modern graphical fare, Unlimited SaGa won't be the slightest bit exciting. The game's catalog of sound effects is understandably limited, since little of it plays out in anything like an action scene, and the voice acting ranges from bad to horrible. The soundtrack is really good and the only saving grace. I advise buying the soundtrack and PASSING UP the actual game....

The game's field scenes play out like some ultra bizarre RPG board game. Your character is represented by a tiny static sprite, and you move in hops along preset paths that are presented to you. Each movement may present some form of obstacle or curiosity--you can be attacked, encounter a pitfall, or discover a treasure chest, for instance. None of these are visible on the board, however, so you'll end up stumbling blindly into things quite a bit. This system of exploration, which doesn't actually let you explore much at all, comes off as stilted and constraining. It's also horribly plodding and makes the movement portion of the game feel like a chore.

Interactions with townspeople, and indeed all the dialogue sequences in the game, play out with mere static character portraits and comic-book-style text bubbles. When you're tired of moving a cursor around the town background, you can head to the inn and see what adventures can be undertaken. Sometimes these adventures tie into your character's storyline, but other times they serve no apparent purpose, and after embarking on one you often have to wonder exactly why you're doing what you're doing. The whole process, which is meant to advance the game's plot, ends up being incredibly nonsensical.

Think of USaga as a point & click adventure. Click mouse, move character, fight battle, collect gold, move to next fight.

Super boring, repetitive, totally lacking of innovation...yup that is Unlimited Saga.

A square dissapointment

Square is the best rpg company out but unfortunately with all good games there's gotta be some bad. The game has good graphics but the game play is awful. RPG's are not about the graphics (Final Fantasy II, III, etc.) there about the game play. If you are looking for a final fantasy, suikoden, wild arms type of game then I do not recommend this. You might like this a bit more if you like the saga frontier series but I still doubt it. Definately rent this or download some previews before buying!

Complete failure by Square

I rented this game before buying. Thank goodness I did. Not only is the game slow moving and confusing but I found that after only an hour I wanted to throw it away. Needless to say, this is one game that I returned VERY early. I am a HUGE Square fan, and RPG's are my favorite type of game. This game was a serious disapointment. Save yourself some money, rent it before buying it.

Interesting story... incredibly hard game

The stories are good, the graphics are well... different. After plaing something like Final Fantasy X it is sort of like going back to Final Fantasy VIII in battle tactics. The battle scenes are plain and there are practically no chances to heal. Only a game for the true hard-core gamer. I hope Squaresoft comes out with a strategy guide soon, because I'm going no where in the game until I get one.

Huh?

When you first start playing, two things will enter your head 1) What's up with the...graphics? and 2) Hu-du wha???

1) Pretty soon you won't notice the graphics because you'll be too occupied trying to stay alive

2) I know, the game is extremely confusing! Don't worry though, after you read some stuff... you'll understand better, plus after you practice you'll learn to love the system of the game.

Stick with it, and the game will become unbelievably fun!

... here is what i give this game
Music - 10/10 Wow

Gameplay - 8/10 It is good, except for it has a huge lick factor

Story - 10/10 there are 7 stories so if you dont like one then pick another

So this game should of got 5 stars by me...but where the game [is bad] is this.

Difficulty 100000000/10 THIS GAME IS WAY TOO HARD! It would of been a better game if you got more party members in the start of the game, if you could actually buy some sort of healing potion (the only time you can heal is in town, and the adventures are LONG) [bad] durability with some weapons, my guns always fall apart....
Only get this game if you are a hardcore gamer

people just don't like a good challenge these days

yes yes, i know. this game is hard. but i spent 50 bucks on it, so i swore to myself that i'd get my moneys worth.

the one and only reason you should buy this game is if you like a game with a good story. all 7 characters in this game have very interesting plot lines. the battle system is actually quite good (it's like the romancing saga games on the snes). problems: the HP and LP system is stupid. the level gaining system is too limited (limited to the point where you feel very weak against very strong enemys, and can never match their power). not enough healing items.

but you gotta respect this game. unlike other reviewers, i found the hand drawn graphics to be quite interesting and different. it really is like nothing you've ever played when it comes to rpgs. if you're one to not give up on a game when it gets tough, this one is definitly for you. you WILL die. many times, in fact. if you can handle that, pick this one up. you won't regret it.

Unlimited Saga looks great, well its not. The battle system kicks cause its ezier to do combos which makes it more fun. What bummed me out was the fact that to get around you are a like stone figure thing and u pick where you want to go. If something in the area your in, it just like appears. And for trapsa nd stuff like chests u ahve a stuppid like slot machine to see if u dodge the trap or open a trap. Borrow this game you'll get bored quick

A match made in HELL

Know what you get when you add Square, the finest RPG company in many people's mind and Enix, the developer of the... interesting.... game Grandia X? Yes, a mtch made in hell. When you play this game.. well, if you play this game.. I'm sorry. Anyway, if you end up playing it you will realize that something not right happened when Squaresoft made a fusion with Enix. A few people defend this game because they think new is good; well I was unaware that good, in turn being new, was turning RPGs into countless menus, spinning (practically random) selection wheels, and turning the past-time of exploring into a board game. I bought this thinking how could this game be as bad as what people say? It's got the brilliant minds of Square behind it! I really should listen to people. Don, don't get this game, if you are human it will dissapoint you in SOME way I'm sure. If you own every single RPG ever made, then add this to your collection and go play Final fantasy 9... hell; play Final Fantasy 1!
