Fairly shallow

There's a reason this game is perfect for online play: the utter lack of depth inherent in its gameplay. The analog stick moves your tank, the L&R buttons strafe, the X changes your view (only 2 different), the Y button handles the chat feature, and the A & B buttons are your main and secondary attacks. That is all. You can throw away your manual right now, because THAT'S the entire game.

It gets irritating getting killed every few minutes, as most confrontations between you and opponents result in little more than trigger-happy point-blank standoffs. The strategy involved in this game is minimal because the tanks are so slow you can't really maneuver around once an enemy bears down on you. And the enemies often sneak up from seemingly nowhere to kill you in less than a handful of shots. Then you die... again... and again... until you run out of continues.

The game engine is actually fairly solid. Accurate control, rich graphics, ability to level surroundings & structures. It just displays very little hallmarks of a game that you will want to come back to. The online mode helps, but it too will get just as boring and tedious as the 1-player mode.

If you are in the mood for a solid, arcade-like, shallow tank game, then by all means fire away. Just be warned that boredom might ensue sooner than you think.

And if you're wondering, the microphone is a funny little pack that plugs into one of the VMU ports, not any sort of headset or ear-piece.

Elegant gameplay

This is what arcade games are about, and Sega is the best at it. The gameplay is easy to grasp without being too simple. The action is fast without being disorienting and confusing. It's a great looking game with top notch graphics. I love that you can choose to be the army defending the earth or the aliens invading it. The vehicles move very uniquely so you're not just trading paintjobs when you pick different vehicles. This is one of the best games for the Dreamcast.

This game is very good. The gameplay is simple. You get to be either the ARMY side or the ALIEN side. I choose the ARMY more becuase they have more armor and their faster. I WANT TO HOOK THIS UP 2 A PHONE LINE SO I CAN PLAY ONLINE. I want to play on line SO BADLY! I got this cool microphone and I wanted to use it for voice chat. Get this game if you have a phone line hooked up to your system.

when I got this I thought all the aliens were alive but you're in a vehicle. You can be on either the army or alien team(My best is the aliens). On the army you can ether be a markava,an abrams or I dont know what its called but it's heavy artiliry. On aliens you can be a hover craft,a 2 legged walker,or a spider walker.

This is one great game! There are numerous positive points, too many to list here. On the negative side I would have to say that the graphics are fair, not exceptional. The explosions could have been done a little better. The backgrounds (buildings and such) were moderate. However I can live with the graphics because the gameplay doesn't suffer in any way. There are only 6 different terrains to play on and they get old very quickly. Other than that, this game is fantastic. The voice chat is great too. I would reccomend this game to anyone who likes fast paced action games.

Man what a title... an online game(wahoo) with voice chat... how great can that be? Man can u imagine talking to your friends via Dreamcall? this is like getting a phone and much much more... a great port of a good arcade game. The arcade version had a link between two arcade consoles... so i couldnt try the voice chat there...but if its anything like dreamcall itll be fantastic... great controls in this tank/scifi shoot em up' generic...also check out the graphics... 2 words... 2 sweet. If this title plays like it did in the arcade... we're in 4 a real thriller.

AFO is one fun game. At first, I was afraid that it was going to be too hard because I heard it was like Q3 type playing, although similar, it is not Q3esque playing. Unlike Q3, the guns cannot be aimed on a vertical plane, which means, when you are trying to stear, you will not point up in the sky.

Also, the microphone works great. As long as everybody talks loud enough, you can understand everything clearly. Its easier than typing, and quiker, and you don't have to stop playing to do it.

The servers were amazingly fast. I played the game online, of course, and did not notice any lag what-so-ever. This could be becuase the game has only been out for 1 day, so not too many people have it, but it still worked great. The only gripe I had with online play is that it does not let you choose the 2nd dial-up account, its default is the first dail-up account. So you can't choose a differant one like you can in nfl2k1 and Q3.

AFO is veddy, veddy good, sir...

There's lots to like about this game: Play as either side in a "War of the Worlds", "ID4" aliens vs humans vehicle based action game. The graphics are great. I love all the little touches like destructable backgrounds, army men running around to be squashed, killer sub-weapons (who doesn't want to launch a tactical nuke at a bunch of alien scum?) Add network play that works pretty well over the Dreamcast's pokey modem and you will have fun blowing schtuff up. The icing on the cake is the included microphone and in-game voice chat so you can strategize with your team mates or talk smack to your opponents. All this ...??? I'll take 2 and save a mint one for the collectors in a few years. This'll go down as a great sleeper for Sega. ...

This is a great little game, nice graphics, good sound and nice simple addictive gameplay. A warning though, when playing this game single player you wwill be confronted with the toughest game you will ever experience, some of the later missions are nigh on impossible and if you somehow manage to complete it your a better man than me.

Think of AFO's no frills offline components as more of a practice tutorial for the real battle online, and you may have an easier time justifying your purchase. In eight player deathmatch, the battles can get pretty fierce. It's just too bad the gameplay isn't all that spectacular. With all the revolutionary stuff going on especially the voice chat in AFO,the game still falls short of greatness.Plus,i don't think i'm nitpicking when i say that with the popularity of the DC dropping by the day,the omission of a split screen multiplayer mode is awfully shorsighted. The fortress and CTF modes help its longevity, but there's just not much here to keep me coming back.
