Whiplash: An Unfortunate Accident

1 Rating: 1, Useful: 4 / 4
Date: March 31, 2004
Author: Amazon User

The first half-hour of "Whiplash" ushers the player into a seemingly new and exciting world of mischief and madness as Spanx the weasel feverishly flails the vociferous Redmond the rabbit in every which way during their escape from the animal testing labs of Genron. Sadly, the same senseless button-mashing is all it takes to progress through an otherwise bland, repetitive game.

Following the introduction of Spanx and Redmond, the player is unleashed upon the Genron staff and laboratories and is encouraged to destroy all that lay in their path. While the promise of the systematic destruction of an oppressive, animal testing corporation sounds like a lot of fun, the game becomes extremely repetitious as each "new" level changes very little from the last.

In addition to lacking gameplay, the graphics and sound leave a lot to be desired. Jagged polygons and flat backgrounds fill each level as the same sound effects are continually repeated as the Genron facilities are obliterated. Granted, Redmond's various comments about the mistreat of animals and his pending reports to the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (P.E.T.A) do offer a nice change of pace as the garrulous rabbit is swung into various pieces of equipment and gaggles of employees.

In short, "Whiplash" is the ideal game for someone looking forward to countless hours of random button-mashing with little strategy. If you are looking for a game with more substance, "Whiplash" is probably not the best choice.

Funny, but FULL of weird glitches and problems

You know, I really think that all the professional reviewers of this game couldn't have gotten more than a quarter of the way through it, or they wouldn't have given it such favorable reviews. (From what I can tell, on average, it got about 4 stars out of 5, amongst professional reviewers outside amazon.com).

In the early stages of the game, it is both very fun and very funny. Is the humor offensive? No. But it's very politically-charged and anti-corporate. It's funny to see such a strong anti-corporate message in a game developed for a SONY game system (and who makes video games anyway? Not the government!)...but hey, the anti-corporate thing sells to college kids.

I played this game to within ten minutes of the end, at which point I ran into such a severe glitch that I am unable to finish the game! I'm 10 hours into it, and I literally have less than a half an hour to go, and I have to abandon it and start the game over! Why? A cutscene that was supposed to be activated once I completed an objective never happened, and the next event was never triggered, and no matter what I do I can't GET it to trigger, and there we are. But it's typical of this game. If you play this, you'll find yourself falling through solid floors into blue nothingness, killing enemies and having parts of them (with sound effects) floating in mid-air, and getting stuck inside boxes that are supposed to be solid! And you know how you can charge up the bunny with different things? Once, I charged the bunny up with electricity, and then I got on an elevator...and the electricity remained on the ground floor when the elevator went up, but the bunny continued to bounce around as if he were electrified. I can't say it enough, this thing is chock full of TERRIBLE BUGS.

Also, you would need a doctorate in cartography to make any use of the in-game maps. It's ridiculously difficult to see where you are in relation to where you're trying to go, and panning and zooming to different parts of the maps is badly controlled and awkward. You will CONSTANTLY find yourself trying to complete objectives with no idea where you need to go or what you need to do. Towards the end of the game, you have to backtrack through EVERYWHERE you have been so far without any guidance as to what you should be doing.

I was really looking forward to this game before I got it. I thought it would be funny and different. What I got was a glitchy platformer that is so frustrating to play that it makes you want to throw your ps2 out the window, and which contains a STUPID political message. Rent, do not buy.

Great Game But For The Glitches

"Whiplash" is a truly entertaining and creative game. The graphics are detailed and the sound effects, including the voice work is top-notch and quite amusing. The controls are easy to learn and there are plenty of areas to explore to keep the gamer's interest.

That was the good, now for the bad: This game is so filled with glitches that the frustration factor is off the scale. It locks up constantly and you are left resetting time and time again. This problem totally ruins the game. Rent it before buying.

featuring very few enemies, you'll find yourself running to deactivate something most of the time. there are only around 40-50 enemies in the game, and compare that to ratchet and clank's 100s

READ THIS FIRST!!! Then make your decision....

FIRST OFF, I HAVEN'T PLAYED THE GAME YET.
Second off, I rated this game based on what its average rating was in the first place, in order to keep from changing its status.

THE ONLY REASON I AM WRITING THIS NOW IS SO YOU MAY REALIZE THAT THIS GAME IS RATED 'T' FOR TEEN.

**NOT THE 'E' FOR EVERYONE THAT THE PRODUCTS PICTURE SHOWS.**

I will write another review after I have had some time to play the game, and decide if it is appropriate for my 2 kids (8yrs, and 11yrs).

Demented and Twistedly Fun!

First of all, this is a completeley original game. Don't be fooled by it's dark and deranged outer shell, because Whiplash is a fun and inovative platforming/action game. The story goes like this. There is a evil, huge mega corporation that use animals to test new human products. It just so happens that Spanxs the weasel,( who was experimented on with electricity, ) and Redford the rabbit ( who was experimented on with beauty products, ) are chained together and are about to become fused together for the rest of thier lives. Yet they escape the grap of the scientists, and must elude capture at all costs, as well as free all of the other test animals. The only catch? They're chained together.
It does sound wierd, but it is completley addictive and fun. You use Redford, who is indestructable because of a hairspray test that gave him an impeneterable shield, as a whip and can give him many funny and useful powerups. These include on that inflates, another that lets him electrify gaurds and other enimies, plus at least a dozen more. Or you can simply whip him about. The graphics, while not the best, are very unique and have a griddy/saturday morning cartoon look about them-not bad at all, and they stay at a very constant framerate. The sound is great, with a mix of bizzare sound effects and catchy music. The game is however not as long as it could have been, roughly about ten to fifteen hours depending on how good you are at it, but nevertheless, it is still well worth the forty dollars. I recommend Whiplash to everyone, so don't miss this clever and original game when it comes out the seventh!

Such a great game....why the glitches??

This game is sooo good. Right up there with Spyro! Very funny especially the bunny Redmond who is your sarcastic weapon. Problems started for me when I started to collect the security cards. The blue balls in the ceiling are supposed to drop so you can swing up and they never did. I started over, and this time, in "waste", the second lock to the incerator wouldn't open even after i pushed the button. I started over again and when it happened again, i kept hiting the button and finally the incinerator opened. Finally, I got to tha part where you race to turn off the alarms. There are 3. I forgot where the third one was and din't reach it in time. It started me over with one to go, but no matter how many times I pushed it, it didn't work. Then, times runs out and life over. That's when I got angry. I see that this happened to someoen else, one other person in the reviews. I had been wondering if my game was defective. I am going to e-mail the company. I REALLY love this game and I am sad that I can't finish it without glitches.

Fun and funny, interesting play

I'm not much for platform games, but Whiplash definitely grabbed my attention. Most games try to be funny, but fall flat. This game is extremely rare in the humor department and had me laughing over and over again! Although the game can be quite difficult in some areas, but then again, it is definitely keeping the spirt of 'run jump and die' style games, and you will be doing A LOT of that in the later levels. Thankfully, there are plenty of free lives to find and you have ample oppertunities to get through an area before you run out of all your lives.

The artwork is definitely on the 'cartoony' side of things which is why I didn't give this game 5 stars. It's very colorful, but the textures are a little flat, but the level design makes up for a lot of that. Plus being able to destroy practically everything you see is tons of fun, and a great way to vent some anger!

This is definitely a game for anyone of any age who likes a good challenging platform game. Although younger folks might not understand some of the humorous banter, I'm sure they will get a chuckle out of all the other stuff they can catch and the weasel is just too darn funny even tho he never says a word!

CUTE!

This game is too cute for words! On some sites they say that this game is not for everyone and is offensive, but I think it's GREAT that there is a game out where animal test subjects not only escape, but are on a mission to free all the animals and put the company out of business! Freeing the animals there, from hamsters to monkeys to eels is part of each mission. Along the way, you beat up evil humans and break stuff. When you break stuff, it calculates the damage you're causing the company! The weasel, Spanx is adorable and so is Redmond the bunny. Spanx uses Redmond as a weapon because they are chained together, but Redmond doesn't get hurt(cartoon style). Instead of losing a life, you get "caught". The characters are funny and they even mention PETA. The game itself is platform and there are many puzzles to figure out. I have only had it(I rented it) for a day and a half and I love it. I'm going to buy it and the strategy guide! The box really should have better cover art, something cuter, colorful and clean. It gives you the wrong impression of the game. I haven't loved anything this much since Spyro!
BUY THIS GAME and get out there and start attacking those evil humans. This isn't a kid's game, but with supervision, definitly sends the right message to them!
I hope they make a sequel, but how can they? Hmmm...

Whiplash......

As much as I love Platformers, I really hate it when a new one comes along. The reason why is because I expect something new from it than just rehashed gameplay that I've played a hundred times before in other games. I like to see games push the envelope, be daring, and not so politically correct all the time because games that push the envelope usually become the classics we all know and love. Oftentimes(though), especially where Platformers are concerned, the ones you'd love to see sequels to just don't get made(like, for example, one of my favorites:"Jersey Devil") and the ones you could care less about have a gazillion of them made.
Enter Whiplash....a Platformer that, while not exactly pushing the envelope per se, is more politically incorrect than any other game I've known. Chances are, we'll never see a sequel to it on account of that one reason & that would be a shame because, even though it is your basic Platformer, it has alot of potential and is alot of fun to play. Despite what some professional reviews might say about it being offensive, I found nothing offensive at all about it. Being politically incorrect doesn't necessarily make it offensive, you know? You play as Spanx and Redmond...a weasel and a bunny(natural enemies in the wild) that must escape Genron(a corporation that conducts horrific tests on cute, fluffy animals) and that is where the fun begins. Like Tak in Tak and the Power of Juju, Spanx and Redmond are two characters in the game that you can't help but like. If I could find anything wrong about the game, it'd be that characters models in the game doesn't have very high polygon counts. Seeing what the Playstation 2 can do graphically, I know they coulda' did better. Course, you'll be having too much fun to notice, really.
Indeed, Whiplash may be just your basic Platformer. There's definitely room for improvement, though, if and when we do see a sequel. I, for one, hope I'm wrong and we do see one. Whiplash( like Tak) is definitely cool.
