Centipede - you loved it last decade. . .

This is a great update of a classic! You can play arcade style, which is just as you remember it, or an updated version, which is really cool. This is also a great game for parents who don't want their kids playing the usual, ulta - violent video games.

The updated version of Centipede puts you right into the game, where the mushrooms loom before you and a mean looking centipede is coming from any direction. The graphics are good (though not great by today's standards)and the game is very exciting.

A fun and fresh take on a classic!

I completely agree with the previous poster -- we got this game because we were not interested in the relentless and realistic bloodshed of the other games out there. If you liked the arcade version from way back, you'll love the new "Adventure" mode offered in this version. A big difference is that you can't blast everything in sight -- you have to rescue people and defend their homes while fighting off the bugs. The 3-D effects are pretty good, and add a layer of difficulty to the game (if the bugs are on a hill above you, your shots will go into the hillside -- and I've slowly slid into icy waters more than once). You can select a number of different viewpoints as well, from first-person to overhead. The game also offers a two-player option in adventure mode, which allows two players to simultaneously do battle with the bugs (better players can thereby help lesser players advance to levels not attainable alone). All in all, a fun and addictive game!

Better than expected

I had no desire to purchase this game, but for less than $10 I figuered I would get some amusement out of it.... At least I could sell it and get my money back.

I was surprised to find out the game is actually pretty playable. The Atari/Midway people have done a fairly good job at updating their games from the past and looking at it from a new perspective (pun intended). They did a very good job with Gauntlet Legends, and a decent job with Missle Command, Pong, Frogger, and more. After all, those games originally stood for solid gameplay if nothing else. Centipede doesn't lend itself to a game that can compare with other modern games like RE Code Veronica, but I found myself playing this a lot longer than I expected.

Fans of the original Centipede will be pleased to know that the original game is included and it's near arcade-perfect. But the main game is the "adventure" mode, which is an updating of that classic game. In addition to new graphics and a 3d engine (which looks very simular to the engine used for Gauntlet Legends), there are some added gameplay elements. Taking a cue from Missile Command, there are people and houses/bases to protect. There are also more monsters to shoot beyond the centipede, flea and spider. Control is perfect, the analog stick stears the player's ship and the triggers underneath the controller are handy for strafing. The player progresses through sections of levels, opening up other sections and sometimes leading to a boss to fight. At the end of each level bonuses are given for the people saved and houses still standing.

A couple complaints... the people you are supposed to save are so tiny it's very easy to accidently shoot them. There is also some minor slowdown in areas, depending on how much is on the screen at a time. This doesn't make the game unplayable, but it is noticable. Finally, this game gets pretty repetitous after a while... like the original it's best played for a few minutes at a time.

All in all, not a glowing recomendation, but if the idea of a 3d version of the Atari classic sounds interesting, you can't beat the price. Worth considering.

Well I decided to order on the off chance that it was fun. Surprise its an addictive shooter just like the original arcade version also included on the gd-rom. Both are great fun the adventure mode is addictive as there are 35 levels. Probably more fun for adults who remember the aracade original. Although I could see young gamers enjoying it as well just not the blood thirtsty teenage gamers of america. Anyway enjoy its a fun game two player or alone.

This is a waste of a game. While the graphics are neat for a bit the control is pretty horrible and it butchers what was a classic arcade game. Stay away...

This game was great, for about 30 minutes. After that it loses its appeal quickly. You will get very board with it after about 30 minutes. Its replay value is very low, rent this first. This is just my personal opinion.

I played Centipede when it was plugged into those big, archaic things that lined the arcade centers. What's neat about this game is you can play the original version. But why? The 3-D version is so much cooler and more challenging than the 2-D shoot-em-up games of yesteryear.

This game rocks!
