Dust off a six year old game, and call it new again.

Godzilla Unleashed is a fun game for a short amount of time. Not really much different that the 2002 GameCube game Godzilla Destroy All Monsters, Unleashed has about the same graphics, same game play, and same sound quality. I expected more, as these two games are six years apart in development. But no, developer Pipeworks Software, Inc. simply took the old game, added a few more cities (which resemble their real-world locations not at all), slapped on clunky and unintuitive Wii controls, and put it out there in the hopes of getting some of that crazy Wii action.

Don't buy this game. If you have a Wii and a GameCube controller, just pick up the old Godzilla Destroy All Monsters game for five bucks used. Really, you are getting almost the exact same game, save a few monsters and cities. The story line is dull and boring, but you have to play through it to unlock other playable monsters. Yes, a game you paid for, and you can't play all the advertised characters unless you trudge through the single player story for a few hours.

The Wii controls are completely unintuitive. Clunky and, many times, unresponsive. You would think fighting games on the Wii would be a cool novelty, but Godzilla Unleashed shows how not to implement the Wii controls.

Horrible game that does nothing over a six year old game of similar name by the same developer. Don't bother with this title. Or, if you really would like to own it, wait a few months, and it will be in the five buck bargain bin in no time.

Godzilla Unleashed: Not Worth the Money

if you absolutely have to own this game, wait for it to hit the bargain bins. it looks like it should be fun, but the controls are really confusing. the levels end abruptly and there isn't a lot of incentive to unlock stuff.

This is a game I bought for my 17 year old son. I wasn't sure it was the right game but when he opened it he was amazed that I ordered the exact game he had mentioned. He was so happy. Toys for older kids are not easy to choose. Thanks for your help with all of my Wii selections!

Fun for a while

I now own this game for the PS2 and for the Wii. Overall I enjoyed the game more on the PS2 with the classic game controller with the rumble feature which seemed more fitting with monsters and buildings crashing down on the screen. The controls on the Wii are interesting and fun at first, but as the game goes into later and much harder stages the controls get a little more confusing. This is one of those games that are terrific right out of the box. You see all of your favorite monsters and the crazy powers and you can't wait to start destroying cities and fighting other monsters. Later on in the game when you are trying over and over to unlock a new monster it gets very frustrating. Unless you are a huge godzilla fan I would wait for this to hit the used section and pick it up for half price.

Looks Great, Plays Bad

'Godzilla Unleashed' is like dating a supermodel with a serious amount of baggage. She looks great on the outside but once you start peeling back layers you can see she's not all she's cracked up to be. The graphics and look of this game are great. With the graphical ability of today's games you can make a game that is very eye appealing and not spend any time on the gameplay or AI of the game itself. This is exactly what is going on here. The writing is poor, the premise is boring, but having said all that it's great to look at. If you are looking for a fun game with great gameplay this isn't it. If you love monster premise games and are more concerned with the look you will probably be happy but don't say you weren't warned.

** NOT RECOMMENDED

Smash! Super Leg Kicking Fun!

This is a fun and straight forward game. You are an earth defender, and wield a monster (Godzilla is the most recognizable) to fight a variety of other monsters. Over time, you can open up other sets of monsters to play, or fight with...

The strategy is fairly simple: bash them, smash them, beat them, win! The game play is fairly well attuned to the capabilities of the Wii game system. For certain combinations you flick, slash, and whip the wii controller around, and that works best if you are standing, swinging your arms...

The game is hard for my 8 year old to master easily, but he enjoys the straight forward nature, the good graphics, interesting monsters, etc. I enjoy a limited amount of bashing, but the story line wears thin. The perfect age for this game is about 10-14 years old. This is a fun game to play!

(After multiple plays, I find that this game stands up pretty well. The game is a bit more than monster smash, if you play the story-line version. It is also fun to sit down with your kid and each pick a monster, and go at destoying a city together. Competitive, cathartic.

Fun, but has major issues

Want to run around as a giant monster and trash buildings? Beat up on other giant monsters? Shoot fire out of your mouth or mutilate creatures with your giant drill-hands? This might be your game. Godzilla Unleashed is a fun game, but it has some serious drawbacks that make it one I would recommend renting rather than buying.

Overall, this game is pretty fun, but it has some major drawbacks that keep me from wanting to play it all the time. As with many fighting games, Godzilla Unleashed is basically a button-masher. However, it has an added dimension: controller-shaking. In theory, this is a pretty cool addition. To grab an opponent, you tilt the Wiimote and the nunchuck forward. To jump, you tilt the nunchuck upward. However, sometimes I found that I had the controllers tilted forward too much to grab, so I had to bring them back up, and ended up jumping when I didn't want to.

The bigger problem, however, is the camera. The player has no control over the camera. Generally, the game tries to focus the camera on one of the other monsters in the environment. However, this makes it confusing and more than a little awkward if you're trying to evade a monster to gather a crystal--the camera angle can constantly change, making it difficult to navigate. Also, I've had instances where the camera will go behind a building, making it difficult to see the monster I'm fighting, and difficult to even see the monster I'm playing. Also, on levels where there are multiple monsters (and I would imagine that this would be the case if you're playing with more than one other player), the camera sometimes zooms WAY out, giving you a nice aerial view of the city, but making it nearly impossible to see where you are and where the other monsters are.

On the plus side, the game has a LOT of unlockables, from different factions of monsters to art galleries to environments to use in multiplayer. However, unlocking these will take a great deal of time--much more than I'm probably willing to invest.

Decent game, but a disappointment overall

This game has a huge selection of monsters, which is one of its stronger points (except for the American-made add-ons). The rest is organized into the following categories.

Graphics: 5

The sad part is that the graphics are probably the best part of the game. Except for some occasional lag, the particle effects and details are incredible.

Plot: 2

Lame and uncreative. The usual overused plot of the Vortaak are trying to conquer earth and blah blah blah...

Gameplay: 3

This game is fun until you get most of the monsters. The funnest part is just going out and having an all out brawl with 3 of your friends. Going through the story and unlocking monsters is fun at first, but quickly becomes redundant.

Overall, this game is fun, but lacks replay value unless you have 3 willing victims... I mean, friends. Don't try to go out and unlock all of the monsters to start with. Unlock a few more, play with your friends, then save the rest for after you get bored with your other games.

Fun for the entire family

We enjoyed playing this game. Some of the movies interpersed within the game were a bit confusing, however, if you aren't familiar with Godzilla and the story behind "him". My 11 year old son thought this was an average game, definitely fun, but not the best game he has played on the Wii. I thought the graphics were excellent and the game was fast paced. This game is definitely worth a look, but you might want to purchase it for someone who is already a Godzilla fan!

Fun, but not addictive

The worst part about video games is the addiction factor. Everything around the house gets left undone while you think "just a few more minutes" or "just one more kill". You'll be safe with Godzilla Unleashed because you can actually walk away from it.
Don't get me wrong, this is a fun game. The story line is a bit hokey (I would expect nothing less) but you get to choose who you will be. Its always fun to destroy buildings and kill other monsters. The crystal thing seems a bit of a distraction, but it does provide you with another enemy. I'm not a huge gamer, so it could just be me, but I found some of the moves using the Wii-mote and nunchuk to be somewhat awkward. The graphics are fair to good (I've seen better and much much worse).
I am definitely not a person who will play a video game on my own for hours on end. But if I have a chance to beat up some friends I'll stay at it for too long. This can be good or bad, but with Godzilla, you won't stay up all night.
For Wii parties, not my first choice. For something different, and sort of a trip down memory lane, this is pretty fun. I think kids in the 10-12 range will like it the most.
