Even more fun and exciting than the first TOCA

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 51 / 51

I have been waiting for the U.S. version of this game since I first got wind there was going to be a sequel to the highly challenging and immensely fun original. All I can say is that is was worth the wait. In a nutshell the game has become even more realistic than it's predecessor. And that is no small feat! The graphics run smoother and at a higher quality, with less of the annoying break-up seen in TOCA 1, increasing the realism immensely. The game itself is based on the 1998 TOCA season and includes the same rule changes implemented for the series itself, including one lap qualifying, a short "sprint" race and a feature race. This can be quite interesting, especially if you mess up a qualifying lap and have to start from the back of the grid! The AI drivers are aggressive, and they will defend their lines going into corners, but they won't deliberately ram into you...unless you've done that to them recently! It bears remembering that the "I" in AI stands for intelligence, and that means that each driver will remember your moves and act accordingly as the races and the season progress. The standard level is a good place to start, you will be able to score the occasional victory, with the subsequent trip to victory circle being an nice little add-on piece of animation, without having to get too technically involved with tinkering with the car's setup. Figuring out how your car performs with even the slightest of changes to, springs, brake balance, ride height, gear ratios, etc is almost a requirement for any success at all at the expert level. That is where your skill as a technician as well as a pedal-to-the-floor driver come in handy. It takes alot of practice to get it right, and you are sure to get it wrong most of the time at the beginning, but keep after it and you will definitely improve.

Another nice feature to this game is the addition of support races. You can have yourself a real race weekend driving everything from formula fords, with their skinny-treaded tyres, to the ultra fast Jaguar XJ220's. Good practice to learn a track but you need to remember that different cars behave very differently from each other when stepping back into the touring cars.

Okay, enough of the glowing praise and onto the faults of Touring Car Challenge/TOCA2. There are but two. Firstly the commentator is a very flat and seemingly un-interested American, as opposed to Tiff Needell in the original, and secondly the inablity to save a game after a really good qualifying lap is annoying. Other than that, all I can say is that this game really kicks butt, and is well worth the many hours it will take you to master it. Buy it and have a blast. Definitely one of the best racing sims ever produced!

BTCC is still on top!

Despite the problems that have plagued the BTCC this 2000 season it is still on top (although now i've switched to watch STCC for the fact that I am a Volvo fan and they still race there) This game is the most realistic racing game I have EVER played in my life. The cars actually respond just like they do in real life, and look very real, I especially like the fact that it will take your name and place it on the car just like in real life. Even the pit stop velcro appears in the feature race and then is gone after you pit. Forget gran tourismo and all those other phoney balogne racing games, this is as real as it gets!

(Unless you do not watch touring car racing and have never seen a real touring car race then you will flip out and wonder why the cars dont handle like they do on other computer games, all loose and fake)

If your a real touring car championship racing fanatic this is the game for you!

The Best!

This game is the best. First of all, it has good graphics,
but if you are comparing them to GT or GT2 then these
graphics are OK. I also like the view of inside the car.
On some games you only get the back or the front. Another
great thing about this game is the weather you can change
from foggy, rainy, sunny, or storm. I like the damage when
you crash, but I don't think everybody likes it. The only
bad thing is that there are no codes for this game on
xcheater.com so that you could get all of the cars and
Bonus Tracks, but that is the only thing that I don't like
about this game. If you call the number for cheat codes
inside of the game case they charge for the call. If you
like racing games I would get this game, but you would have
to buy it used because none of the stores sell them new
more. JUST GET IT!
