Ace Combat 5

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 7 / 14

Ace Combat 5 is so much better than Ace Combat 4 in many ways.First off the graphics and AI is much better. The explosions look and sound better and this has some planes and weapons ace 4 doesn't in addition to wingman control which is really helpful.Ace 5 employs the same weapons ace 4 does and new ones. Here is the weapon list.

Anti Air
Qaam
Saam This is new you must keep the plane or copter in the circle to hit it and the saam has long range usually one hit will bring down a plane.
Xmaa
Xlaa

Anti Ground
UGB
UGBL This is my favorite one since it can take out more than 4 targets at once.
RCL
NPB
FREB Fuel Air Explosive This is another one of my favorites to use. This will take out multiple targets usually 4 or more and these frebs are better than the one on ace 4 as the explosions are much louder and looks better. You can see it ignite over the objects if you hold down the triangle button.
BDSP
SFFS New Bomblets spread out and take out multiple targets

Guided Anti Ground
LAGM Just one of these missiles can take out 4 ground targets at once.
XAGM
GPB
SOD

Anti Ship
LASM These also work great on ground targets and are essential for battiling the biggest ships like the rimtaxie. They are long range.

Special
ECMP New These can jam missile locks that a plane has on you and can get you out of a bind but you only get 5-6 of them.

TLS Tactical Laser System New This is only available on the Falkin plane. This laser will destroy anything air, ship and ground and very quickley. They will take out the Arkbird,Sinfaxi,Solg very quickley.Planes that are moving are a little hard to hit with this laser but you can if your careful and you can take out a lot of them. This laser is helpful and elimanating the Belkin Grabac Fighters which are the aces of your enemies. To get the falkin you must destroy certain hangers in mission 12a,12b,16a,16b and 27a.You can do this in free mission mode once you complete the game. Also the falkin has a 360 degree view if you fly it in cockpit mode and it has 84 missiles and is very fast.

The X02 is easier to get in this game as well. All you have to do is get all 50 planes and you open it up.You can use free mode to fill up the kill meters on planes.

The wingmen mode is very helpful. You can tell them to cover you if you get an enemie behind you,Disperse to take out multiple enemies,Attack if you run out of missiles and Special Weapons.

Once you finish the game you open free mode and also you can fly anyplane you choose in free mode and for the most part in campain mode with the exception of just a few levels.

Here is the pros and cons of this game.

Pros
Free Flight You can fly on any level without enemies once you complete the game.

Free music Listen to any song from the game you want to hear. This is available once you complete the game.

Painted enemy aircraft once you finish the game you must shoot them down.

Better and Louder explosions.

Better Graphics

Better Storyline You can watch any storyline in free mode.

Better Characters You will be flying with Captain Bartlett(Heartbreak one),Nagase(EDGE)the only female pilot,Captain Davenport(Chopper)who talks a lot,Grimm(Archer),Pops and Captain Snow(Swordsman)You are Blaze and you give commands starting at mission 3.

New Weapons and Planes

3 views 1st 3rd and cockpit. You can change views on this by hitting the r3 button.

Landing is easier and taking off is louder with more vibration.Landings also offer 1000 points.
Refueling Missions on 2 levels which offer 1000 points if you can do it.

The TLS Laser on the Falkin. This laser can take out anything quick even the toughest enemies if your in a hurry to get to another level.

The X02 is easier to get just by getting all 50 planes and on any difficulty. You don't have to get an S rating on every level to get the X02 like you did in ace 4 and the missile count in the X02 has incresed from 82 in ace 4 to 84 in ace 5.

Flip a coin missions.Chopper will ask you certain questions and if you reply yes for example you will go to 11 a and no 11 b.Note all missions are available in free mode so you can play 11a and 11b if you want.Split missions are only on campain mode.

Arcade Mode In this mode you are Mobius One and you must take out some resistant Eurusion fighters in the air, ground and sea. This has nothing to do with campain mode it is a totally different storyline.

Cons
You can't go back and land when you want to reload your missiles and secondary weapons and fix damage like in ace
4.Landings are only available in certain missions as well as takeoffs.

You only get one secondary weapon per plane.

On some missions you must fly reconnisence around radars without getting caught and take pictures.

I hope xbox will get it's own version of an ace combat game with a different storyline since they have no flight similator games.Crimson Skies and Secret Weapons Over Normandy arn't really flight similator games with fighter jets.I can't wait to see Ace Combat 6 come out.I am already saving for a playstation 3 since that is what it will be released on.If you are looking for a relistic fighter jet flight similator game ace 5 is it and ace 4 is also good.

Don't know that I'd buy it over AC4.

Without going into too much detail, Ace Combat 5 is fun, but I don't see the selling point over Ace Combat 4.

I really enjoyed AC4, so I was looking forward to the release of AC5. After renting AC5 for a week, I'm not sure I'd buy it.

Usually, as a title evolves, greater capability is added. In AC5, the opposite actually seems to have taken place. While it's a nice addition to be able to give commands to your wingmen, sometimes they ask you questions, which require a yes/no response via the controls, and well, they frequently seem to ask at the worst possible times, when you're busy doing more important things. All in all, the game doesn't really feel much different at all, aside from a new storyline.

The biggest ommisions from Ace Combat 5... there's no longer a 2 player mode, in order to dogfight with your friends. You'd think perhaps that in lieu of this, they've enable online fighting via internet network, but nope, that's not there either. Curious ommision.

Actually 4 1/2 Stars would be more appropriate

Those creative folks at Namco have created another great installment of this classic air combat game. The landscape graphics are more diverse and maintain AC4's realism. The storyboard graphics and animation are captivating as always, but have been weaved a bit too often into the game playing modes.
I was happy to actually see destroyed ship targets sink upon destruction and a diversified aircraft inventory. The replay sequences are longer, but lack the distant camera angle view we saw in "Shattered Skies". This however, does not detract from the enjoyment of the game.
I would have liked to have seen a competition mode with the possibility of using PS2's network adapter, just a thought.
Overall this game is a testament to the continued persuit of excellence by NAMCO, who will hopefully not wait so long before they dazzle us again with another Ace Combat game.
P.S. Namco folks, I hope history's past is not off limits for future games like this.

Not what I expected

Ace Combat 5 is a ok game but it is not what I expected. Here is the stuff I dont like about it. You cant bail out, each plane has one secondary weapon, some missions have no combat in them, the storyline is really stupid and unrealistic, missions can take up to 40 minutes to beat, your new "wingmen" dont do anything all they do is ask yes or no questions that you have to answer by pushing a button, all the missions want you to protect somthing, when you push the button you sometimes crash, you cant ditch a plane and theres not enough enimies in a mission. Heres the good things about it. Theres a lot of planes to choose from, the grafics are really good and theres over 30 missions. Ace Combat 5 is really just Ace Combat 4 with wingmen, better grafics, more missions and more planes.

Great game with great graphics

I have found that the game is really fun. I have at times been annoyed with some things in the game, but I can only attribute that to my own mistakes. I know some people complain of the lack of online play, or just flying around shooting things, which gets old for some people. Others complain of the lack of real work by the wingman, or the inability to choose your weapons loadout. I have found that sometimes my wingmen should fight more and talk less, but they have been helpful with information to beating certain levels. Sometimes what they say is annoying, but other times it is helpful, or just plain funny. I also wish that I could pick my weapons, but I am satisfied with picking my planes instead based on the mission. For example, pick a plane designed for ground attack when your mission is to attack ground targets, there are some planes designed for such missions, while others are more suited for aerial combat or multirole. I have replayed missions because I realized that I had chosen a plane not really suited for the job. Overall I think that the game is great. I also realize that with console games the developers can't always put everything into a game they want because of a lack of memory. There is only so much they can cram into a game. When I purchased the game, I also went for the flight bundle (which comes with a very cool flightstick). The new control makes all the difference in the world. I would advise getting one if you can.

Great simulation !

This is one of the greratest simulation games that I ever played since long time ago... I used to "flight" and "fight" since MS Flight Sim 5 and this is one of the most (if not the most) realistic games that I enjoyed.
Play and you'll have a lot of fun and stress. The variety of planes you can fly it's incredible.
Just fly !

Very Appealing Aerial Combat Game Better Than "AC4"

I've played AC4 and AC5, and I can tell you AC5 is more of the same, which is good for me. AC5 has more missions and a better story, and you'll find yourself actually developing a relationship with your squad of fighter-pilot jocks. I could probably tell you some characters' first name, last name, rank, and flight moniker. Around mission #4 of AC5, you become the squad leader and can decide if you want your squad to attack targets around you, cover you, or disperse and when you want the squad to use their special weapons, individualizing their routines. Once I realized and understood the differences of these, I used them to my advantage. Obviously, the rest of my squad never would kill as many targets as I would, but this is assumed, since I'm the one playing the game. If you like flying, just sit back and enjoy the view, with a lot of action to keep your adrenaline going.

I am only disappointed AC5 has no two-player mode. AC4 had a two-player mode. But, this is okay, since this appears to be more story-oriented, and I still own AC4.

I finished both AC5 and AC4, and they are very good. Most of the time, you just need to know the appropriate way to do the mission. If you know what to do, you make each mission simple. Actually, this can be taught, and reading a strategy guide in a reputable magazine or internet service could warn you of the proper procedure. Sometimes, I watch the mission briefings, but I just need to be told what I'm doing wrong. For instance, on the mission where you have to take the aerial photographs, I would take the shots too close, but the guy on the radio would always tell me I was too far away, which makes no sense. The game only allowed me to take the photos a certain way to let it function properly.

Over all, I felt AC5 was a better game. If you liked AC4 as I did, you will be happy again, with more missions this time. I would play AC4 on its "Ace" mode, and now I'm in the middle of AC5's "Ace" mode, which becomes available after beating it once. I'm glad the makers brought over the aircraft carrier landings: this is a cool addition.

5 is less that 04

There is much good to be said about Ace Combat 5, The Unsung War. It's exciting, fun and looks fairly slick. Still, compared to Ace Combat 4, Shattered Skies, it comes in a distant second.

The problems as I see them:
1.) A silly story line which is weighted down even more by a wooden, at times laughable script - and poor, really poor, voice actors.
2.) The menu screens aren't as coherent as in AC04. You will spend a lot of time navigating through them, trying to figure stuff out.
3.) On the search radar screen, your plane does not stand out clearly from your comrades. This makes it hard, when you're in the middle of a dogfight, to see where you are and which way you're going. Also on the radar screen, the icon for your plane doesn't turn smoothly like before - in one degree increments. Now it turns in probably ten degree increments. This makes it harder to determine your exact heading. Now you have to stop and look at the heads up compass display to precisely gauge that.
4.) In the mission screen third person view, the planes just aren't as detailed as in AC04. They don't look as good, and in playback mode, they seem to fly kind of cobbily - not fluidly like in AC04.
5.) You can choose planes for yourself and your wingmen prior to each mission, but you can't choose your weapons now. And you can't return to base to re-arm. That was one of the neat things about AC04. You could tailor your plane to suit the mission. That loss maybe more than anything, hurts this game in my view.
6.) The wingmen command feature is distracting. For example: you'll be in the middle of a tricky, ground level strafing run when they'll suddenly ask you for orders.
7.) Was it necessary to change some of the controls? You have to unlearn certain habits from AC04 or you'll be crashing a lot when down low.
8.) You can't fly as high as in AC04, and when you do go up, the views aren't as good.

What is good about AC5 is the new missions you get to fly, and the somewhat enhanced terrain graphics. I'm glad I got it and it's still alot of fun. It's just that it pales a lot in comparison with AC04

Not a worthy sequel

If you've played Ace Combat 4, play it again rather than this follow-up. Game play is ridiculously easy, the only saving grace being that there are a number of missions to pass your time. The flight controls are great, as they were in Ace Combat 4, but the chatter from the wingmen - constantly annoying and repetitive, particularly if you have to repeat a mission. The worst part for me though, is the constant beating of the anti-war drum. Now, that might make sense in a game about hippies picking flowers, but this is a game about war - the purpose of the game is to blow up the enemy, not daydream about more peaceful times. Like I said, just save your money and replay AC4.

I have not opened the game as yet. I just received & am very dismayed to see on the back cover the game is for 1 player. I bought this game because the description listed said 1-2 players.
