Great Package, OK game

If you're not content with simple slash'em, shoot'em, make-things-very-dead mecha games, well, this may be the game for you. Armored Core 3 is a shooter that allows you to customize your fighting vehicle, the AC. Body parts, generators, radiators, weapons and all the other analogs to things you'd find under the hood of your daddy's Buick are presented in pseudo-scientific detail on a menu of parts that would put Baskin-Robbins to shame.
The mech designs are absosmurfly beautiful (I think they were designed by Shoji Kawamori who designed Macross/Robotech). Graphics of the mechs is great, and all cut-scenes incorporate your mech in a manner reflecting the parts you choose. Unfortunately, these beautiful battling behemoths duke it out on rather pedestrian, repetitive scenery.
Gameplay would be better if controls were more intuitive. Vertical panning of the targeting reticule is controlled by L2 and R2 - which are in horizontal relation to each other - would've been better if they'd used one of the analog sticks.
It seems to take forever for the AC to follow your commands! The slow response of the controls may add realism to reflect the fact that you're piloting a great big robot, and not a motorcycle. Nonetheless those who like Zone of the Enders-esque rapid reflexes may find this game frustrating.
For pure bang for the buck, this limited edition set is probably the best way to get Armored Core 3. It comes with a special-cover version of the game. You can play while decked out in the spiffy Armored Core T shirt, and your favorite textbook can be clothed in a lovely bookcover. My personal favorite is the awesome action figure (worth bucks even on ebay).
In summary: Nice graphics, fun to customize your mech, lousy controls. When gameplay drives me nuts, I just vent out my frustration by pitting the included action figure in a slugfest against some beanie babies.

I don't game much, but I'm a kid at heart! the little figurine is great (sits on my bookcase to watch my progess), and I gave the T-shirt to my nephew as a gift. Loved the items that were included, and the game is a nicely expanded (and complete) version after AC2. Enjoy!
