Longevity?

In short...

I loved this game, what more could you ask for in a game than what GTA 4 offers. Well the answere for me was longevity. I am now bored of it sadly which is good for my friends cause I just let them borrow it. My best way to say this is, to this day I still play guitar hero 3 but I stopped playing GTA 4. What I learned is no matter how many great reviews a game gets only some games can truly be fun to keep playing day in and day out.

Not my deal

This is the first GTA game I've played so I didn't know what to expect. All the critic reviews are so impressive that I decided to try it out. Well, after playing for about a week, I can understand why it got the high scores. There was a lot of development that went into the game in terms of detail to the massive scale of the city and living environment, which impressively includes weather changes like rain and fog, to what you can do, e.g. you can watch tv in your room or play pool or bowl, etc. But I found these things tedious and just skipped them throughout. Even the cutscenes I skipped because they were drawn out. Somewhere around hour 8 or so, the game just kind of dragged for me. The whole sand-box novelty wore off and I was just hoping the game would end soon. (note: I hate long games, so I'm not into rpg's or I guess these type of games; I'll never be one to complain that a game is too short like some other reviewers.) I realized I wasn't close to finishing the game so I just returned it. Maybe the game gets better later, but it's already eaten up enough of my time. Glad I rented it instead of buying first, which is something everyone should do nowadays.

In conclusion, if you have the time and the interest in these virtual worlds, it's definitely a cool game and pretty amazing considering what you can do in it. Just be prepared to do them umpteen times.

Other notes: Regarding the graphics, they are pretty good, just what I expected from looking at the box. The driving isn't so bad, you get used to it quickly. I've heard about the freezing issue with the game, but my copy worked fine.

Good, but overhyped

Overall:
A very good game. It's all the things everyone says it is, but it has some serious flaws. Since you can find the positives anywhere, I'll focus on the negatives.

Positives:
Very fun, entertaining game. It's easy to get hooked.
The gameplay is very detailed - there are a lot of things to do.
The graphics are stunning.
The subtle and not-so-subtle humor throughout the game is terrific.

Negatives:
Biggest negative thing is the combat mechanics. The auto-aim works well in most situations, but it seems to break down when you have targets that get really close. It's easy to die in a firefight when it won't target the guy who's right next to you, and occasionally you'll end up shooting at an innocent.
Ditto for using cover. Works well most of the time, but sometimes it's infuriating.
Be prepared to drive. A lot.
The AI could stand to be tougher, especially the police. The police cars don't chase you half the time (especially if you're on foot), and it's extremely easy to get away. The game makes up for it by making the police way too ubiquitous - they're roughly 1 in every 10 cars on the road, and there are guys on foot everywhere. It's still not a problem, though, if you know how to drive.
Car possession is a little too "loose". You end up stealing cars all the time (which is too easy to get away with), while the game doesn't want to remember the car that you are driving. Sure, it will remember it if you park it outside of your apartment, but what good is it there? If you ever die or drive a mission-critical vehicle, you can kiss your sweet ride goodbye.
As open-ended as the game pretends to be, it's really rather linear.
A minor thing: the cars aren't randomized at all. It's not uncommon to see four or five of the exact same vehicle (different colors) in a row. It's visually annoying, and makes stealing cars weird; you can only seem to find fast, expensive cars if you are already driving one.

The best GTA yet!

In Short:

1. You can play online in every way you want to with up to 16 poeple.
2. The controls are the best yet with only the close combat of inside a building being frustrating.
3. The story for this one is the best yet. It's easy to connect with the main character and his struggle.
4. What are you waiting for? I guarantee that you'll spend at least 100 hours on this game. That's between beating it and messing around for fun.

In Long:

I'd have to say, after playing every single incarnation of GTA there is mind you, this is the best yet. This game stand in a stark contrast to Vice City. Where as Vice City was all about getting and having everything, literally, this game is about having and starting from nothing. It's about all in all being a good person at heart, but just having bad luck and meeting the wrong people. That's the story line in a nut shell.

The game play is truly refined. Some people complain about the controls, but quite honestly the controls are the best I've seen for GTA. Walking and Running serve their purposes and get you to your vehicle, but the one place you'll be cursing the controls is in the extremely tight spaces of apartment complexes. In these places you'll be wishing you could juse use FPS controls whenever you wanted to. That's the one thing I wish they could have added.

The driving takes some getting use to as it's utterly changed. It's for the better though as it's gone from being "cartoony" in that it responded nothing like a real vehicle to MUCH more like the real world. Once you get use to it, you'll love it. Vehicles respond pretty much how you would expect them to in every way. Muscle cars have power for the straight aways and aren't that great at turning, the rule of decelerating into a turn and accelerating out of it and the fact that if you speed on a motor cycle your going to die after rolling for a mile or two are all true.

Weapon switching is much better this time around. Where as in a couple of the incarnations you had three tiers of weapons, this game has only two and there is a very clear upper and lower tier. The weapons work beautifully and so does the aiming system. Not only is aiming a breeze, but you can lock on to which ever target you're pointing at by fully pressing down the aim button. You can then adjust the lock by moving the "tethered" reticule. So once you know exactly how far up to push in order to aim directly for the head, you're pretty much golden.

The game can be beaten with thirty hours if you JUST do the storyline. Of course nobody will wanna do that their first time through. It's a really great game with a TON of other stuff to do as optional side missions. This missions have ABSOLUTELY no bearing on the storyline! Then there is the online. That thing that everybody has been craving. You can now go online in Free Mode and just play with up to sixteen people in the huge city. Have fun! :D

Whats really going on?

GTA has been a favorite of mine since GTA III. The game is always fun. I like how they added GPS to the vehicles. The graphics aren't too bad. Its alot of fun...for the most part. I give it a 7 out of 10 I like how they added the cell phone thing into the game, but it can also be a pain. If your a cold blooded killer, your not gonna blow up my cell phone asking me to hang out, and get upset and lose friend points when i have other stuff going on. Every time im in a car, i am constantly having to shift the right thumb stick down just to get a good view. When your on a mission, and killing people, it only shows the "main target" on the map. The same problem lies in the racing aspect. You have no idea how far the other cars are behind u. I'd like to know if hes right on my tail, or if i have time to mess up and still be in the lead. When im on a mission and almost dying, how come i can't find any med. kits or food? they could have had the character get his energy back for staying in one place. So please don't spend $60 on this game. I'd wait til it went down to $30.

The Game of our time

Each generation has its own videos, music, art, books and whatnot, to define it.

With modern society, games have started to become more of a culture and attraction than anything in the past. Anymore, a good game can easily compete, if not outsell, novels and cinematic bigscreen movies.

They are no longer animated-pixel "toys" to the modern world, and can tell a tale and show a world just as vast and creative as those in a movie or book.

And for a game like Grand Theft Auto 4, it not only disproves games are just for nerdy gamers, but its not much of a game at all, as it is a work of art. Quite simply, its the most stunning rendition of reality and the modern world in the face of crimes, gangs, and dilluted dreams of the "land of the free". As soon our character is alive, and the world around you breathes and moves like a typical stroll down a major city or coastline.

I could go on and on into detail, missions, control, story, but whats the point? It's so perfected, that nothing needs to be said other than "How did thy do it?". It's literally breathtaking and awe-inspiring.

I've played 5 hours of it since yesterday, but I can can stand here and produly proclaim that this game is going to be the game that defines this era.

I used to beleive it was the original 1993 id software release DOOM that defined everything for the gaming community, and open up gateways for infinite possibilities for generations to come, but where as it changed the way we perceived and would play games, and what could be permitted in them, Grand Theft Auto 4 redefines by adding life to a game, the ability to step into your character and everything becomes suddenly aware as if you were there yourself.

Do yourself a favor, buy this game. And if you dont have a console to play it on, buy one, and experience it for yourself.

A fun game, but far from revolutionary

Many people are calling GTA IV revolutionary. Yes, the level of detail in this game is impressive, but other than that, it is not much different from the previous GTA games.
The new storyline is interesting, but not exactly an edge of your seat thriller. I personally like the GTA Vice City story best.
While there are aspects of the game that are annoying (ie toll booths and driving on a sheet of ice), any game has its flaws.
In my opinion, the biggest disappointment in this game is the language, which took a big turn for the worse in GTA IV. While GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas all had their share of foul language and sexual content, GTA IV takes it to a new level- perhaps in an attempt to outdo Saints Row, which I feel raised the profanity bar above GTA San Andreas. I feel like this game could have done with a few less f-bombs. Perhaps I notice the language more than before since I have graduated college, gotten married and had a baby girl since the last game came out.

Game play and interface are smooth, the city look frigging great, like I said I just started, but if the rest is like I have seen so far then this is got Game of the Year in several categorizes.

Looked good for half an hour

With all the glowing reviews I felt I had to grab this game and give it a shot. Looks nice and it seems like the story may actually be interesting but unfortunately about half an hour in the game froze.

I can now get it to play for maybe 5 minutes before crashing again.

As it stands I'd recommend renting it to see if it'll even run for you before buying or at least waiting until (if?) Rockstar comes out with a fix for it.

Best GTA ever

This Game is Incredible...I've played about 10 hours over the last couple days...The story/missions/characters are all top notch, The city is huge and just fun to drive around, kill anything in site, bang hookers, ya know its GTA! With a whole Redefined engine...Great graphics/Physics...If you live or know anything about NYC, you know it looks EXACTLY like it with it's own twists and turns. Better then 3, 100 times better then San Andreas and Up there with Vice City.
