Looked good for half an hour

With all the glowing reviews I felt I had to grab this game and give it a shot. Looks nice and it seems like the story may actually be interesting but unfortunately about half an hour in the game froze.

I can now get it to play for maybe 5 minutes before crashing again.

As it stands I'd recommend renting it to see if it'll even run for you before buying or at least waiting until (if?) Rockstar comes out with a fix for it.

Impossible to play

I was looking so forward to this game as it got great reviews, but be warned, unless you are a video game junkie, it is impossible to play this game. I have spent about 5 hours on it and it is impossible to make it past the 3rd mission where you have to disarm someone. No matter how much you follow the instructions, it's impossible to do. So keep that in mind, driving around is fun, but actually completing the missions is super difficult. It would be nice if they had difficulity levels. Oh well, will sell it used for what I can get...

dont believe the hype

There is nothing revolutionary or even particularly well-done about GTA 4. The gameplay and mechanics are pretty much the same as ever (which is to say not that great), the story is like a straight-to-video parody of every bad gangster film I've ever seen, and the graphics, despite the 10 from ign, are far from top of the line and in no way do they deserve that score. I can think of dozens of games that are more fun, have better stories, and better graphics than gta 4. Unfortuneately, these games dont have the benefit of Rockstar's multi-million dollar hype machine.

What a Waste

I love the GTA4 concept, but this game is a waste of time (and money). You spend all your time driving across town from mission to mission, rather than shooting bad guys and driving fast. And if you screw it up, then you get to drive across town to try again. Then, the game wants you to go on dates with various women you meet. (WTF!!??!) If I wanted to go on a date, I would do that instead of playing video games. Want more health? Well, you have to waste you time and find a diner for that. Most games just restore your health after a certain amount of time and get you back in the action. The controls are counter-intuitive and impossible to use as well. Basically, it looks like the designers spent their time pandering to the interests of oversexed 14-year-old boys and not enough time just creating a good game.

Great Game But Too Much Sex and Violence

Overall, this is a great game. It's the most interactive game I've ever played. And the city scenery is amazing. There's so much to do and see. And the car chases are thrilling and fun.

However, I'm giving it fewer than 5 stars because of the blatant sex throughout the game. Sex is everywhere in this game and the player is forced to participate in it from the dialogue between characters, to dating, to the prostitutes on the street. It's so unfortunate that a game of this quality is about sex. And I find this not only offensive, but a bad example to the young people (and old) who play this game. I suppose the people who programmed this never heard of a sexual addiction. Well this game reeks of it and makes it seem that it's okay to visit prostitutes, date multiple woman, visit dating sites, watch porn, and put sex as a top priority in life. That's a very sad and sorry message to lend to the public at a time when morals are already severely wanting.

Of course, the violence is also extreme and it's a bad influence too. It tells the young folks out there that they can do anything they want and there are no or few consequences.

I'm not done playing the game yet but was extremely upset about the scene where Niko takes out a crime leader and kills him merely because he's dating Niko's cousin. I wish they would have made Niko less of a sociopathic mafioso character and more of a misdirected good guy who is fighting crime rather than participating in it.

I wouldn't recommend this game for anyone under 18. My sons are all grown and they also play it,(and they also find the sex and violence offensive, thank God) but if they were younger, it would be off limits in this household.

Don't Believe the Hype

I read many positive reviews of this game and was convinced to purchase it. I played it for several hours and lost interest. It has got to be about the worst story ever written for a video game. The characters are all shallow and not at all interesting. The gameplay is slow and repetitive, to the point where you feel like you are doing the same boring tasks again and again... oh wait, you are. The driving portion of the game becomes annoying very quickly... there is no realism.

Not worth it!

If your 12 years old it might be good, but then the language would not be appropiate.

Waste of money and time.

All the hoopla is why it sold not because of the (so called) game!

A great game, if it doesn't destroy your xbox360 or PS3

We all know that this game is great, one of the best games ever made, there is absolutely no doubt about it.

What many don't know is that Rockstar has yet again done a very poor job beta testing this game before releasing it. I have had my xbox totally lock up on me after occasionally freezing during playing this game. These same very issues occur on the PS3 version of the game, where Rockstar actually created a patch fix that could be downloaded via the PSN network. At current time of this writing, there has been no such patch for the xbox 360 version.

At first the freezing up for me was occasional, once every couple of hours, not a huge deal. Then it became worse, and then actually wouldn't let me play at all, freezing up as soon as you were done loading a game. Even quickly loading a previous game save before it crashed would only work temporarily. At this point, it was only happening with this actual game, the freezing that is. I was not getting the "Red Rings of Death" that has so plagued the xbox 360. I called in to Microsoft xbox support, and they told me I had to send my console in to be repaired... again, I was not gettting the R.R.O.D. -- they were not going to charge me for the fix, I had an extended warranty on the unit anyway, I did previously have the RROD, about 1 year ago, but have played the 360 extensively after they "repaired" it then. Even playing GTA IV for the first 15 hours or so the game didn't crash even once! Then it started happening occasionally, then it just killed my 360!

This is a great game, but it is awful that Rockstar didn't beta test this game enough. And before anyone thinks this is just me, go and look it up on youtube and you will find TONS of videos of this game either freezing up or completely bricking xbox360s.. Rockstar also had the exact same issues occuring with the xbox360 version of Bully, which also was in the news a bit.

Note to Rockstar... please beta test your games better. Not just for the 360 but the PS3 too. Till then I am not buying anymore games from you guys, it isn't worth my time and aggravation, no matter how good the content may be. Again, remember the PS3 is suffering from very similar hardware failures as well, so we know it isn't completely the hardware itself, but the software crashing the consoles, and in my case BRICKING IT!
