The 'Holy Cr@p, this is so cool' bundle

For those of you reading this, you probably already decided on purchasing this game, and are figuring out of the bundle is worth it: It is!
The Bundle Contains 2 Flightstick2s (throttle and main), the game, and a WarDog Squadron patch

The Game: 4.5 Stars
Wow, this game is amazing, and a major improvement on Ace Combat 4. First is the revamped story mode: Its amazing. The ciminatics are really good (think Squaresoft's FF:Spritis Within movie), and have alot to do with the actual game (unlike AC4), and are realy fun to watch. Second: there are 50 planes, all highly details and looking great, but only about a third can be purchased. The rest are 'earned' by killing a certain amount of targets with it (think weapon upgrades in Ratchet and Clank 2). As for weapons, they can no longer be purchased (nothing major). The missions are very fun to play, and have references to each other, such as your base is usualy recognizable and findable in missions in that genral area. The ground and sea in this game look much better then AC4, but could have been better (try shooting bullets into the water, the water slashes up if you are close enough). The wingman gimmick is pretty cool too. You talk to them, answer their questions (yes or no) and that all effects the game. You also give them commands such as to cover you, spread out, attack certain targets, or use special weapons. Side note: some of the missions feel recycled from AC4 (the better ones), especially the one when you are attacking yuktobania with your first major landing offensive. Overall, it all addes up to a very fun experiance.

Patch: 5 stars
The patch is well made, but not perfect, but it still is really cool. It's also pretty big, 11x9 inches, and has a barking dog head and Squardron whatever, and WarDog on the bottom. Its mostly blue, with yellow borders, and a red dog collar.

Flightstick2 controller: 5 stars
This is the main point of buying this bundle. Its very worth it. The sticks are extremely responcise, well made, have size adjustments (rubber add-on to make the main stick more comfortable, it works well), and feel like they should feel: great. The buttons are all well placed, each accible easily, but some of them are not used (decorative), and thats a bit disapointing, although it still looks cool. They arte pretty durable (i i've jerked back on the throttle a few times accidently becouse i was about to crash, and each time it worked perfectly, with no sign of damage). My throttle came a bit too hard to use becouse of throttle friction, but that's adjustable, and works perfectly now.

Overall, I'm very happy with the purchase,a nd its worth every cent you spend on it. On a side not, Electronics Boutique [ebgames.com] sells it with an additional tin w/ 3 patches from the game and a 'making of' DVD for the same price, but shipping (eb saver shipping) was $15. The tin is cool, but the patches aren't of the highest quility, and the dvd is a bit shallow, but if you like AC5, its a definite must buy.

Great Graphics, Great Gameplay

I love air combat games, and it's really impressive how good the graphics have gotten. Ace Combat 5 takes place in a fictional world, with real life planes. Of course, there are very clear similarities here - your team has all English names and phrases, while your enemy seems to have very Soviet sounding names. Their abbreviated names is the "Yukes".

You're part of the 108th Squadron and you, with your wingmen, fly around in a variety of situations. You help defend a civilian airport against attack, having to shoot down the tanks and planes before the airport falls. You fly over a snow-filled arctic ocean, taking out submarines. It keeps you on your toes.

I find it a bit amusing that all of the enemies here speak English - and none use coded channels. You can hear all of your enemies' conversations and radio chatter while you fly around. So much for military planning ...

The graphics are really quite impressive. You see every tilt of your plane's flaps, the firing of your afterburners. The water, mountains, ice floes, cities all have an impressive level of detail, including shadows and lighting from the sun. The HUD helps to organize your attacks - at times it can seem a bit excessive, getting in the way of what you're trying to see, but you get used to it.

The cut scenes actually move the plot forward and have interesting insights into what is going on.

The joystick controls might be good or bad for you depending on your playing style. I know some people who love them - but others who are used to their regular controller might find it hard to switch and get used to a new control system.

The patch that comes with the set is rather large - it's a full back sized patch and not a shoulder or front-pocket size. It's about a full foot high. It has the dog logo on a blue field, with gold accents.

Well recommended for fighting plane fans!
