Positive reviews made me give a shot at this game even after buying Jet Grind Radio (awesome!). I don't have much time to play RPG's, but I have made time for the very best (Panzer Dragoon Saga, Final Fantasy 2 & 3 on SNES, Xenogears, Chrono Trigger). Amazingly, Skies of Arcadia jumps right into this batch of greats!

In every way, be it innovative gameplay (traditional RPG battle plus turn-based ship battles), incredible graphics (the spell effects are INCREDIBLE and DC-powered, the towns are full 3D, textures galore), or personality (characters change 3D facial characteristics to emote), it's all here.

The storyline is interesting and fun and the environments expansive and truly multidimensional. The quest seems quite long too, I'm at 18 hours and on disc 1 of 2 and have only about 30% of the game's "event log" tallied.

As I said, I don't have much time for RPG's, but this one is so good it's hard not to think the inverse: I don't have much time for everything else...lest it get in the way of playing Skies of Arcadia.

Sweet graphics and audio

I had forgotten that when I bought my Dreamcast over a year ago that I was very jazzed about seeing some Lunar quality RPGs with 128 bit graphics. Of course, until now I had seen nothing of the sort. SKIES is that game you cherish. The rare experience that never lets you down and displays quality and attention to detail at every turn. The saga is epic, the spells are incredible, the character developement is very impressive for an RPG on a console. The colors, the lights, the sounds...all weave together to put you in a faraway place where you may have difficulty returning to this world. I have not yet finished the game, but from what I've read, the game improves as you progress. If this is the case, then we are looking at a new watermark and likely the first in a series of SKIES games. What's next? Oceans of Arcadia?

Finally, a good rpg for the DC

This game is great. I got it the first day it came out. It is 2 disc, which I hope will translate into long hours of play. So far its looking to be quite long. I'm hoping about 30 hours of actual play and so far I clocked in 11 hours and I am still on the first disc and have only discover 3 worlds or levels. First the bad stuff, There is ocassional pop up which can be annoying but its only in the ship flying mode. The regular battles tend to be long. Sometimes the camera angle can be annoying which you can change, but its still annoying. THose are the only bad. Now for the good. The towns are huge! You enter a house and its the same size. In other words, you are in a full blown world or environment similar to a first person shooter. No prerendered stuff. The battle system is one of the most unique ones. Its simple yet requires strategy. The music is good and pleasing. The dungeons are quite big, but big enough to be fun not time consuming. The story unfolds rather fast. The game is great and if you are looking for a good rpg before the release of Grandia II, get this game, it will definitely hold you over for a while. One more thing, a vmu with display screen is required, one of the weapons use this display to indicate whether there is a special item near by so it can be upgraded. DC owners, GO GET THIS GAME!

This is a cool game.

It has taken awhile for the good old rpg style. But now there is a good one. This game is just plain fun and full of all the stuff that makes these games addictive.

You start as a lowly air pirate and go in search of fame, fortune and saving damsels in distress.

The graphics although not amazing are not bad and do add a certain flavor to the game.

My only complaint is as usual a major lack of speech. When are they going to release these games with speech.

Otherwise this game is excellent and a hell of alot of fun.

Memories!

Way back in middle-school and high school, I used to love playing videogames, but since then, I've sort of given it up as a hobby. I don't know if I've changed or the games have changed, but I just haven't come across anything like the old Super Nintendo Final Fantasy games or Lunar for the Sega-CD.... until now. Skies of Arcadia is a really classic style, old-school RPG with incredible, "new-school" visuals. The world of Arcadia is really mesmerizing; it's one of those games where you can't wait to move on just so you can see what the next area looks like. Those guys at Sega... they're very creative. You can tell the probably had alot of fun making this game.

Anyways, SOA is a really cool game, and the first in like 5 years to really captivate me. Recommended for new gamers, or anyone whos become dissillusioned with the style over substance games of recent years.

What a surprise!

Being a hardcore Final Fantasy fan I was skeptical about this game! I've seen many bad RPGs! I shiver just thinking about some of them. This game isn't Final Fantasy and thats good! Real good. BUY THIS GAME! This game is a "stay up all nighter!" Very aspect is perfect! It's just perfect. No, I'm not cheating on you Final Fantasy 7, which I 've played and beaten oh... 22 times. Seriously, they have different feels. The game doesn't feel like the developers were trying to imitate FF. It stand on its own! Like a real game should!

Great Graphics + Great Presentation = Skies of Arcadia!

To keep this review short and sweet, I'll rate each sections individually. Presentations - This game is just pure solid. The presentation was just stunning and each battle was designed beautifully, but the epilepsy warnings should be taking seriously here (You'll find out why!) Graphics - Just beautiful and sweet. Nothing else. Sound - The character grunts are annoying, but the music soundtrack is beautifully implemented. Gameplay - Aside from the extremely annoying frequency of random battles, the gameplay is excellent. Appeal - 100 hours. Is that enough?
