Does not support 1080i

1 Rating: 1, Useful: 12 / 23

I bought this game specifically for 1080i resolution. The back of the game lists all the video modes it supports and 1080i is one of the modes listed for this game. My TV does not do 720p or 1080p but it does do 1080i, so I wanted a game that supports 1080i. (These are High-Defintion TV modes, for anyone confused.) So, I opened the game, loaded it into the ps3, and could not figure out how to get it to run in 1080i. It insisted on running in 480p mode (ps2 quality resolution!) So, I went to Activision's website and found this:

"Question
My TV only supports a 1080i HD resolution and the game keeps going back to 480p. Shouldn't the game run in 1080i?

Answer
Please be advised that a limited number of Call of Duty 3 game packages contain a misprint regarding support for 1080i resolution - it should state that Call of Duty 3 supports 720p. Future game packaging has been updated to reflect support for 720p resolution."

I would say that its much more than "a limited number." Every copy of this game that I've looked at lists this mode. I think that is pretty sleazy! Plus they don't offer anything for those of us that bought the game under the assumption that what they said is true, but is in fact false. Also, this is not the first time I've been disqusted by Activision.

Buy "Resistance, Fall of Man" instead...a much, much better game.

"Call of Duty 3" is just lame and does not measure-up to the next generation gaming console standards.

Disappointing! Get the previous one for Xbox 360

Activision screwed this game up real bad. Call of Duty 2 for Xbox 360 was a standout game and had infinite replay value (online multiplayer and offline), but it seems like they changed the flow of the game a lot. Everything feels slow and boring and it pales in comparison to Resistance: Fall of Man.
If you have an Xbox 360 get Call of Duty 2 or Resistance instead. This game is really disappointing.

U should pass on "Call of Duty 3"

After playing the Fall of Man I bought this game and have been dissapointed with it. I would recommend taking a pass on it. I'm not even going to finish it...gonna try to trade it in as part payment for another game.

Call of Duty is a bunch of "Duty"

I took a chance on buying this game and I was disappointed. First of all, I thought I would be getting a 1080i game, instead the game played at 720i (false advertisement on game cover). Also, the game made me a little nauseated, with all the moving visuals.

Good example of a Bad Port

The game is not RFOM. It has many weird graphical glitches like heat waves running over the part of someone's arm. The missions rely on an endless supply of respawning enemy. There are cutscenes that are really just bs and cannot be avoided. Gameplay isn't all that great. It is a touchy bit of control mechanics. I've seen better with older Medal of honor titles. In fact, this one reminds me of that series with some stepped up graphics and many inherent flaws in the game. However, many times I feel I am playing a MOH level of graphics. Oh, the next generation stuff: I remember getting shot in a room with nobody in it. Apparently, the AI can see and shoot through walls.

People who point to this and say that the 360 is better is laughable because the porting just shows how bad a job they did. None of the problems inherent here are present with ROFM. It is clean and has none of the graphical weirdness that resulted here. So, people should not be pointing to ports and saying that one system is better than another.

What could be said for a game that is mass-produced/mass-targeted and hits every single console out there: Ps3, 360, Wii, Ps2. Is it on the DS and PSP also? It is reminiscent of a poor Hollywood sequel.

Good graphics but???

Got this game as part of my console purchase (along with R:FOM).

Have been playing it exclusively for last few weeks after finishing COD1 and 2 on PC. Only playing single player version.

Pro: Excellent graphics and sound.

Con: Excessive use of Sixaxis gets tiresome and repetitive. Example: twisting the joysticks to control mortors/heavy weapons where simple movements would be more effective particularly when FPS targeting is somewhat troublesome with this controller. In the level using a heavy weapon to destroy tanks/armored cars, the cursor went where it felt like and could not lead the targets for a decent kill chance. AI has continues parades of enemy, floating enemy, and own squad members moving into firing line and grenade toss area. The story line is inconsistent where one level you are American, next Polish, next French Reisistance. Very poor compared to original versions.

I recommend not buying and will unload this when I finish single player.

Flawed design make for a boring linear passive experience.

The developers of COD3 also have done other console versions like COD Finest Hour on the PS2.

This time they have a more powerful console to work with, resulting in improved graphics and sound, but not many other improvements.

Lets get right to it.

Pros
- Good sound design
- Authentic settings and battles
- COD is a strong brand

Cons
- Unrealistic gameplay
- Enemies respawn infinitely
- "cardboard cut out" level design
- you can see into buildings, but you can not go inside
- Enemies respawn in this unreachable buildings
- most of the "war" is happening in areas you can not reach because
- the levels are linear w/ invisible barriers all around you
- Everything that happens is a triggered scripted event
- no freedom, stick the linear path to advance story
- Game plays more like being in a movie about war than an actual war
- you never feel in danger because you know that "big war" going on outside the invisible barriers is not going to touch you.
- levels end unexpectedly w/ a basic fade out

A word of warning

The single player isn't bad, but it was the chance to go war with other gamers online that convinced me to buy this game. It was a big disappointment then when I found it nearly impossible to connect to an online game of any kind. Motorstorm, Resistance, both work fine with my internet connect and router, but this game had some major compatibility issues.

It doesn't affect everyone, but there are quite a few people with these problems, if the Playstation forums are any indication. Fixing it may require tinkering with a number of router settings, or there may be no fix at all, depending on which version of the PS3 you have.

Personally, I'll be exchanging this game as soon as I've beat the single player. I could probably get it working with some time and effort, but really with several other high quality multiplayer games out there that don't have these issues, why bother? If I have the urge for some online FPS carnage, guess I'll be going with Resistance for a while.

And the next time an Activision game comes out, I'll definately be renting instead of buying first.

Better online

The game is ok. It is a lot more fun playing online. The graphics are good but the kills are weak. When I blow a Nazi away I want to see him die with some purpose. Resistance fall of man is what I mean when you shoot someone or something you want to see body parts or just a little more action. Like I said it's a good game but its much more fun playing online.

great game, sub par graphics

i've played all of the cod games. this one is just as good as the first 2 in terms of game play. great game concept and fun to play. but you can definately tell the game is simply a pc port. the graphics were not made for hdtv resolution. this game renders at 720p, although it says on the box it supports 1080i, which is most likely for tvs that only support that res as my tv supports all resolutions, but this game renders at 720p. in many cases the graphics look horrible especially the opening cut scenes. bleh. don't get me wrong 720p is fine for games. oblivion looks awesome at 720p. it's not the resolution of 720p that makes the detail in this game bad. it's that, although it reanders at 720p, the artwork that comprises he textures in the game were not designed at that res, so the game looks etchy and scratchy to the point of annoyment. great game though. i can't wait for games that are made specifically for the ps3 to finally be released later this fall although rfom is a true 1080p (desgined for 1080p and rendering at 1080p)
