Stylin'

Playing "No More Heroes" is a can't miss treat which oozes style, eccentric characters, and fun. The boss fights are easily the best part of the game with memorable characters that run the gamut of samurai schoolgirl to a Darth Vader wannabe. In between bosses, however, there is a sandbox mode where you can workout at the gym, buy new clothes, buy beam katanas, rent videos to learn new wrestling moves, and find various oddjobs to pay the fee required to battle the assassins. With regards to the sandbox mode I would say it isn't well-designed but it works with only one or two minor problems, it isn't meant to be very interesting because its purpose seems to be in order to serve as an illustration of the hum-drum world juxtaposed against Travis's fantastical adventure. The combat is deeply satisfying without being particularly deep thanks in part to its fast-paced nature and way over the top(but not gruesome and horrifying) deaths and bloodletting. The graphics aren't the best the Wii has too offer but it has style: it uses color, sound effects, and visual effects in a consistent and highly enjoyable manner.

If none of the above has convinced you to buy this game yet I would like to say that its one of the extremely few games I've beaten more than once just for the sake of reliving the experience.

Great use of the Wiimote

This is a great game. It is fun to play and each endboss has their own unique characteristic. It uses the wiimote controller to its full extent when finishing off a character, doing a wrestling move or getting out of a jam, you need to use the wiimote by moving it in the direction it shows on screen. Be warned, that if playing a lot may cause a little strain on your hand if you don't rest once in awhile. I would definitely recommend this game overall.

4.5; unique game on a unique system

On the Gamecube, a game was released called Killer 7 which was quite violent and had simplistic gameplay yet there was something addictive about it and the graphic style was quite refreshing. However unique doesn't mean mass appeal and despite a cult audience, Killer 7 isn't really a big seller but luckily that didn't stop Suda 51 (Goichi Suda) to keep going and announce its follow-up: No More Heroes, exclusively on the Wii. While most Wii owners will undoubtedly pick up Super Smash Bros Brawl when its released, you should also give No More Heroes a go.

Story: You play as Travis Touchdown, an otaku geek who buys a Beam Katana online and ends up killing the assassin, Helter Skelter. A woman named Sylvia of the UAA tells him that he is now ranked 11th on the list of assassins and has to keep fighting in order to be number 1 as well as avoid being killed by those who wish to take his place. With a number of odd jobs to take on as well as the ranked assassins, Travis is gonna have his hands full.

Graphics: In an age when games are either anime-inspired or going for photo-realistic characters which not only looks unique but rather refreshing even though there's a bit of anime inspiration in its designs. In-game it looks just as stylish although in progressive scan, there's some things like jaggies, minor parts of slowdown and just a feeling of unpolishedness but the game succeeds on style alone as opposed to perfect presentation.

Sound/Music: The voice acting is quite good with quite a few swears and funny lines though at times the dialogue's clunky like some of Travis' taunts but other than that, it's just as good as Killer 7's and is quite welcome as opposed to reading it all. The music is just as great as well and if you're a fan of Killer 7 or dance-y soundtracks, I recommend picking it up.

Gameplay: Rather than have a on-rails first person shooter, NMH follows more a GTA look with the city of Santa Destroy ripe for exploration which range from gyms (levelling up stats), t-shirt stores, brand new katana models and mini-missions and odd jobs like mowing lawns. This is integrated well and while things get more expensive than your jobs pay out, there's quite a bit to do. Should you go and take on a ranked assassin is where combat comes in. With your beam katana as well as wrestling moves, Travis takes on enemies by pressing A for katana or B for kicking/stunning which allows the wrestling moves. Just before enemy dies, a prompt comes onscreen with an arrow; just wave Wiimote in direction of arrow and Travis will do a special (and quite bloody) kill for cash. Wrestling moves are triggered when enemy is dizzy and upon pressing B, another prompt involving direction with both Nunchuk and Wii-mote so one might do wave both up or down while one half needs all left than all down. It makes combat intuitive enough to get into it quick and its diverse moves and upgrades keep it from becoming stale.

But as far as gameplay faults, there's a couple that people will either hate or just minor nitpicks. For one, that game is kind of easy and while enemies will surround you and a boss might be tricky, it's not an overly frustrating game which is welcome but its not challenging and keeps you on your toes. Another complaint is getting money which at times works but the jobs themselves are either boring and not as fun while others can be slightly frustrating.

Like Killer 7, No More Heroes will be just as polarizing with some loving and some hating so while I'd recommend you play it since I love it, it's also with a warning of caution but instead of playing minigame inspired Wii games all the time, it's fun to take on something like this and just have a blast doing so.

Over the top fun

No More Heroes is a nice addition to any Wii owner's library... That is, if you can handle the blood, the language, and the adult themes. That being said, it is now a regular addition to my playlist after I put the kids to bed. The story is very strange, but I like the off the wall concepts and the effort to release something different and unusual for the Wii. The gore is over-the-top with spurting blood and severed heads, but it really fits with the Anime vibe. Controls are pretty tight and the exploration is reasonably fun. The graphics aren't the best, but I still like the visual style. This is not GTA or anything else you've played before, but it is a lot of fun. It is not quite at the level of the 1st party Nintendo titles, but a good pick up, none the less.

Good title for the Wii

This game has a graphic style of its own and is really fun. The visual quality is limited by the possibilities of the Wii but overall it's very pleasant. The game is filled with funny references and the story line is good. The gameplay is a little bit repetitive after a while but overall this is a good game and unique in its genre.

Great game!, a little bit short, but if you play in Bitter mode, you'll have hours and hours of gaming!

Strange Game, it's Love/Hate - Hit/Miss

The developers certainly spent a lot of time working on the game. The cel-shaded graphics are well done and the controls are pretty well refined. The plot and atmosphere of the game are... odd. It plays out like some Japanese anime where pieces of the plot are loosely connected and inconsequential tangents are plentiful. The game will leave you wondering what exactly just happened.

The game is playing in two intermingling styles, missions and sandbox:

The mission parts progress the plot, but after a while slicing up henchmen gets repetitive, even though the finishing moves are dramatic and give the action a lot of flair. There are certainly some exceptions to this, but for the most part, levels revolve around killing henchmen. The boss fights are quite well done. Each boss is completely unique and the particular art style allows the game to blend together cutscenes, gameplay, and quicktime events in a completely fluid manner.

The sandbox parts feel tacked on and are quite disruptive to the flow of the missions. The sandbox portions only provide you with more menial tasks to do while you wait for the next mission. I certainly did not enjoy mowing the lawn or picking up trash. The city is quite empty and lifeless, unlike GTA3. The character development parts are also quite annoying. I did not feel attached to Travis and only worked on his stats because it would make killing henchmen quicker.

Overall it didn't click with me, but I can see how someone could love this game.

Good:
* Boss fights are exciting
* Killing in a bloody manner is initially fun

Bad:
* Missions repetitive
* Character development feels more like a chore

Keep in mind before you buy:
* You do not shake the controller like a sword to attack, you press the A button. You do use the motion sensing functionality in certain circumstances.
* The game is reasonably short. I would say 15 hours or so.

Old School Cool...

A brief look over the majority of other reviews really leaves me with little to add so I'll keep it short and sweet. This game has appeal for those who like Star Wars style light saber fighting, anime, wrestling moves and arcade style play that doesn't require the memorization of some precise 5+ button sequence to pull off moves.

It's a fun game that often winks at the player in its humor and retro style. Are there cons to be had? Sure there are but for those looking at this to be an epic end all be all game with the best graphics ever and gameplay to match... they're missing the point. In a gaming arena filled with titles that seek to push the limits be it on graphics, number of levels, camera angles and player endurance... No More Heroes seeks to excel by way of its simplicity and it succeeds.

The game is rated M for mature and parents should keep that in mind and not assume this to be just another happy go lucky family Wii title. Violence aside, the sexual innuendo and light profanity should be enough to keep this game played when the kids are asleep or at school. Though, if you're letting your kids play other M rated titles or watch any number of things on TV ...don't let this stop you.

Perhaps the best aspect of this game is that it further goes to show that the Wii doesn't have to be relegated to kids only or family friendly titles. Nintendo likes to play to that demographic but I hope more software developers try to broaden the scope of Wii games. While not necessarily for everyone, No More Heroes is a worthy addition to the lineup of Wii games and refreshingly different from the norm.

Very very fun

Very few games hook me for a whole week where I play a couple hours a night. No More Hereos was one of them. Excellent art direction, talented writing, cool music, and the best sword controls on the Wii make it a must play if you are 17 or older.

The downsides: basic enemies don't have much personality, the boss attacks can be pretty repetitive, it's not in HD, not multi-player.

Ordinarily, those downsides would make me give such a game a 4; I just can't do it this time though. This game is a solid 5, and needs buyer support so that they will make a sequel!

Lightsabre carnage...manga style!!!

this game is so whacky in its storyline and dialogue that it must have come from the minds of the great minds at ubisoft. fighting sequences are so violent and bloody but hella fun...especially when u nail a boss with a wrestling move. the side jobs u do to earn cash are so ridiculously mundane compared to the rest of the game that i cant help but laugh. seriously now...mowing the lawn and picking coconuts? lol. i love this game.
