Great Game!!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 2 / 5

As a fan of Diablo and Diablo2 I had pretty much given up on ever seeing a Diablo3. Despite the comparison of Hellgate to Diablo, I was hesitant to buy this because of the negative reviews. I'm glad I didnt listen to the negative reviews in this case. Whether you want to label it Diablo3 or not, I'm really enjoying it. I like the new setting, the addition of the marksman for shooter fans and the ever changing maps. In D1 & D2 the maps stayed the same within the same game which became boring if you had to replay them. In Hellgate, most maps change everytime you go into them, making you want to explore areas 2-3 times. The game plays great on the pc I just built (E6750cpu/8800GT512SSC video/21.6" digital monitor). Oh, there may be a few minor bugs, but not enough to complain about (so far anyway). This Diablo fan is finally getting his fix. It's been a long time coming.

A bit repetitive, but fun

I bought this despite the tepid reviews because I just wanted a mindless DirectX10 game to mess around with. I have to say that it's better than the reviewers make it out to be.

While the environment and monsters are monotonous and repetitive, and the cut scenes are boring (mostly a narration over an image of an animated book, I kid you not), everything else about the game is what you would expect from the original Diablo developers. The character mechanics are interesting, and the loot system is excellent. The gameplay is well-balanced and engrossing. Normally I hate first person shooters (and have a lukewarm response to action RPGs), but somehow I still enjoy myself in this game.

I'm never going to sing the virtues of this game from the rooftops, but it's a heck of a lot better than the reviews and word of mouth make it out to be.

In a word; BORING. Too much effort spent on lighting effects such as weapon flash or demon attacks and too little time on the environment. The levels are so similar that they quickly become tedious, so much grey, grey, grey everywhere. The way the NPCs jump and jerk around (bugs in their pants?) when you're interacting with them is irritating. Also because of a game flaw they can be in two places at the same time and remain after their dead with one NPC superimposed on another. All this time spent to develope the game with so little to show for it. Certainly not the worst game ever but don't pay more than $15. The story line? Hmm, not sure of what to say there, confusing? All the weak parts of Diablo with little of the good.Diablo 2

I like this game but...

This game is pretty fun in tbe beginning(for a few weeks) but after that, i just stopped playing it or played it quite less. Iono, i guess the randomized levels and repetitions are way to similiar that you feel like you've done that already. I know this game is supposed to be repetitive in term of gameplay but I played diablo2 for more than 5 years and i still find the game enjoyable to play even to day.

In tern of graphic-wise, hellgate has some good gfx. I ran it out on 1650x1080 rez, max setting in dx 9.0, everything looks really nice.

Overall, i give this game a 3/5 stars.

Don't expect Diablo III or anything innovative here.

So Blizzard has made more money off World Of Warcraft than any game in history and the former Diablo II team members who did not move over to work on World of Warcraft left to form ArenaNet and make Guild Wars (an excellent series of game I might add), pretty much the rest of that team later left Blizzard to form Flagship Studios and to make their vision of what Diablo 3 should have been and that game is Hellgate: London.

So how is it? If you liked Diablo 2, it won't take much, the controls will take some getting use to, but the concepts and even a lot of the UI look from Diablo II has carried over here. This is all good, except that the genre has really innovated beyond Diablo 2. Since it appears Diablo 2 will never get a real successor, I would say Guild Wars which came out in 2005 (still alive and relevant today through an expansion and new campaigns) is as good as you can get and it really improved upon several of Diablo's flaws.

Hellgate feels a lot like Diablo 2, but it also feels dated. The graphics just a touch sub-par for their system requirements I would say and overall there's just a feeling that the game was rushed. It feels like you're playing a beta product. The voice overs often seem misplaced and plan bad. The map has no compass and reviewing your quest log is a bit of a hassle. The control is tight, but you can be running fine at 60fps and get mobbed my enemies and drop down to 10fps. The problem I have against Hellgate is a collection of little things that add up to make it overall far short of the fantastic title it could have been.

You would think at least they got the multi-player part right, but they did not.. and they want to charge for a guild and basic multi-player ideas that are available free in other games.

Having said that, if you skip newer games like Guild Wars and go from into Hellgate from (the now very old) Diablo 2, you probably won't realize what all you're missing and may enjoy it a great deal more than I have so far.

Overall not recommended.

Ok, first of all I have to say Wow. This is an amazing game. After having read a lot of the reviews from other people who have played the game I was very nervous about paying the $50 for it (though I should have bought it used on here for $37 but whatever) Who ever was reviewing was extremely critical. When I first started it was really slow just because I need some updates in hardware. So I put everything low and started raising graphics and so far in the section of graphics level, beautiful, especially compared to Diablo 2. In fact, there is no comparison. Hellgate blows that game way out of the water. It is like the difference between Morrowind and oblivion with all the expansions. I started with a character and played till about level 8 then I couldn't wait any longer because I wanted to know what the others had to offer. Everyone is amazing, though I have my favorites.
For those of you who have no idea what the game is like, I have a good comparison. Imagine taking Diablo with all the items and demons and skills and character differences, add oblivion's character generator (except not as complex), bring in quake 4's quality of monsters, and modern weaponry including beautiful swords and such. Though there aren't any medieval themes really anywhere that's ok, go back to Diablo if you just have to wield a hefty axe or something. People have said the levels are dreary and boring but I say Bah! You are too busy killing everything in sight to care. Lots of complexities with skill differences, and just the idea that it is a 3d realm already makes it way better. The glitches have been stamped out with the new patch and game play is nice and fast. Just an important reminder is always check people's missions for you before you go off adventuring or else you will have way too much walking to do. I learned that the hard way, yay!
Overall this game is one of the best I really have ever played. It feeds my addiction of killing masses of monsters and the use of currency to buy stuff and upgrade. Storyline is there, you just need to focus and move fast, you will see it eventually.
Though you don't actually have to pay $50 for it, it's absolutely worth buying. Not a game you will go through in five hours like Call of Duty 4 which is also an awesome game. Good luck and have fun!

Exellent game if you've always wanted a gun in Diablo 2

Hellgate: London def. gets five stars for it's inovative unique appreach. I believe the intent of the game was, as other reviewers have stated, to be the next "diablo." The game comes close, and if you are more of the scifi type, i.e. your idea of a good time is laying down a wall of lead with your futureistic machine gun which has been modified to holy heck, this game is def. for you. The typical character classes, sword and board guardians and magic weilding cultist are familiar, but the special addition to this game is the ex-military perssonel. Interestingly enough, with the ex-military personnel you can switch between third person view and first person shooter view which is an exellent addition for all of us who are first person nuts. This game is worth the money and a must for any first person sci-fi shooter fan.
Super Pro.
You can modify, not just socket, your weapon. By salvaging components from other weapons you can turn a 26 damage rifle into a 76 damage rifle with stun ability and more.
Super Con.
No mousewheel switch between different weapons configurations. i.e. if you have a rocket launcher in slot F1 and a machine gun in slot F2 you physically have to press F1 or F2 instead of using the mousewheel like other forst person shooters. Taking your hand off the controls to do this can be the difference between saving the world or rotting in it.

It's not exactly a MMORPG, but it's good enough for killing time...

After playing WoW for an year, this game is no way near WoW's level. However, as a FPS fan, I like how this game goes - RPG + FPS + some MMO.
The skill points system is kinda stupid, since most of the abilities are not very well designed. Items-wise, it's simple, and kinda boring. Everything is in the dungeons or fixed maps, so it's very much like a infinite loop of similar maps. Graphics-wise, I play this game on my laptop, so I can't really tell how good the graphic can be.
If you just wanna run around kill monster in a more "real time" manner, instead of WoW's click-n-wait; also fun without $15 buck/ month; possible good updates in the future for $10, then I would recommend you to get this game. Personally, I don't have much time to play game everyday, so I log on and play for an hour or so, sometimes team up, sometimes solo. When I actually have time and money, I'd try out Tabula Rasa, which has a more MMO element than this game.
This is not a great game, but not a bad game either. I bought the game for $30 and it's worth it for me. For those of you who paid $49.99, I would say you got ripped off.

Would be fun if it werent for the bugs!

Pros:
Has some entertaining dialogue.
The weapons are fun to use.
Several hours of gameplay.
The character skill trees have some depth

Cons:
The storyline ...you call this a story?
VERY buggy...especially muliplayer, despite several patches
The graphics are a joke for something developed in 2007.
The maps/zones seem too repetitive.
You encounter the same types of monsters in every zone..blah!

Final verdict:
Wait for this to hit the bargain bin and pick it up in about a year. Hopefully by then the patches will render this game playable.

Sad Disappointment

Nowhere did I see that this game could only be played online. I will not play online games so this was a total waste of money. Shouldn't this be noted in the game discription? To rate Hellgate London I can't really give it any stars although the rating was manditory to post a review.
