Little Let Down

I was so excited about getting this game since it's precursor Star Trek: Encounters was so awesome! Unfortunately there are fewer ships, only two dimensions, and fewer options than "Encounters." Yet is has so much potential. If they added the upper and lower planes of motion and more freedom as to number of fleets, ships, and movement I would have given it five stars.

An ok game but fun enough

I was going to give this three stars but then I reconsidered based solely on the fact that it is fun enough to play. It isn't that dynamic or cutting-edge but its relatively easy to pick up and play. The game manual is a bit vague (more so then usual for a turn-based game) so its not immediately clear what the special weapons do. If I had to do it again, I would buy it, but I would probably try to find a cheaper copy.

Best Star Trek game ever created

I play this game everyday because of how it's so well made and this game is highly addictive thats why I play it. It's a little bit as the same thing as Star Trek Encounters but it's a 100 Billion times funner. So add this game Star Trek Conquest to your shopping list because it's worth it.

This is an enjoyable game once you get the hang of it. At first I thought it was boring, then the more I played it, the better it became. There are a few things that I feel they could have done to improve the game.
The first thing the developers could have done to improve the game would be to include more races to play as in the "Campaign" section of the game, i.e. the Borg, the Xindi, etc.
A second improvement would be to have the game play a little bit more like the PC game Star Trek Armada, where you see the ships lying from point to point instead of seeing an icon of a ship moving on the map screen. The only time you get to see the ships is when you are in a battle (if the game doesn't make you do a sim for the battle) or if you play a "Skirmish" game.
A third improvement would be for the the game designers to have included some of the original cast members to do the voice overs for their characters, such as using Jeffery Combs for Weyoun, J.G. Hertzler for General Martok, Marc Alamo for Gul Dukat, etc.
Another improvment would be to incled more ships to use during the "Campaign" section of the game, such as the Federation ships that you unlock for the "Skirmish" section.
This game could also use a 2 player feature, especially in the "Skirmish" section. That would make the game more challenging than it is in the "Skirmish" section. I can beat that area with no problem, no matter how I have it set up.
Overall, even with the few things that I feel could be improved upon, this game is fun.

Bethesda should be embarassed

I am a 4X strategy gamer above all else. I have played, replayed and worn out most titles in the genre. It was with some anticipation that I ordered Star Trek Conquest. I was terribly dissapointed in this game. This game has no diplomacy(spies, trade agreements etc.) Research tree is limited to 6 items(incresed mining, increased research, lower cost for admiral, and three ship enhacements that are only benificial in the arcade battle mode.) You wont be hard pressed to decide what Facilities to build. Each system has two, yes I said two building spaces. the first is for a space station to build ships. The second is your choice of mining facility or research facility. These are the only choices. No other buildings available. Lets talk about military. You are limited to three fleets only and they can have seven ships max. By the way dont plan on designing your own ships. you get to choose from a light, medium, or heavy type ship. No custom races. The real time combat was slow and difficult to use even with the research upgrades, I used the sim mode instead. This game is definitely not a 4X strategy at most it is a .4X game.

Fun, But Very Flawed - It's Empire or MOO for Kids

This game is easy to learn and fun to play. After a few hours, it turns into a fancy game of Tic-Tac-Toe.

As a big fan of Interstel's Empire and Master of Orion I and II, I was disappointed

There are 3 fundamental problems with this game:

1) You can only have 3 fleets, which are basically the same thing as units. Can you imagine playing Empire or MOO with only 3 units for the entire game? It's insane! As soon as your fleet leaves to conquer a planet, the enemy moves in and steals one of your planets.

2) There is no build time, so once you get going, you can build EVERYTHING you need in one turn. So you can wipe out an ememy fleet and it's back to full strength on the next turn.

3) You get into situations where the game is an endless loop. They move their unit to steal your planet and then you move your fleet to where they just were, stealing their planet. It's a tie and the game NEVER ends, even if you have more planets.

With a little tweaking, this could have been an awesome game.

Conquest?

I'm sure I'm going to sound like a star trek geek quibbling with some minor detail, unable to just relax and enjoy a little video game... but I really don't think this is what Gene had in mind. The point of Star Trek is that Humanity had a horrific, devastating World War and out of that rubble, humanity united (rising above national, racial/ethnic, religious, and gender differences) and a new age of Enlightenment came into being, driven by space travel. One that did not end, because the whole multi-Galaxy civilization was built upon it.

Conquest? Inter-galactic imperialism? War for territory? What would Captain Kirk have to say about that? What would Gene Roddenberry? What of the prime directive? The point is that diplomacy and peace and non-interference are supreme values.

Star Trek was great because it says that we will, despite all odds, not let our warlike tendencies destroy us. Sure there was violence in self-defense but I don't think that the Federation would act like George Bush or James K. Polk in space. What kind of a future would that be?

Prepare for battle!

Star Trek Conquest is what many board game players would call a beer and pretzel game. Like RISK or Axis & Allies the game has been streamlined and made easy to play. Things move swiftly and sometimes you find yourself ending your turn without doing a thing. I played one campaign as the Klingon Empire and really enjoyed it.
The game is simple. You start out with one planet and must expand your power over neighboring systems to increase your wealth and develop new technology. Yet you only have three fleets to do it with. That's the max. Three fleets.
My game went in three stages. The first was the peaceful expansion. Which means I had to invade planets that were not yet ruled by any of the other empire BUT still had defenders. Not very good defenders but still had defenses. By the time I was blocked by the other empires I had the most planets AND all fleets were guarding important bottle neck systems. In that I had three entry points into my Empire, which made it easy to defend.
The second stage was me watching the other empire invade each other while I waited and grew richer. I was waiting for my moment. And it soon came. The Dominion took the home systems of the Breen and the Romulan, then the Cardassians took the Dominion home system. I waited till almost everybody but the Cardassians were down to one or two fleets. Then I launched the third stage, my all out attack, blocking the Cardassian fleets with two of mine while attacking the other fleets. Weak, and without the ability to replace their Admirals, they soon fell to me.
As for the reviewer who says the United Federation of Planets were not meant to be about war, you are so right. The humans were one of the first to fall to my mighty warships, their homes burning, their women and children taken as slaves, their men cursing in vain as we turned their civilization into ruins. BUWAHAHAHAHAHA!

This game is fun. I have fun paying this game. The graphics are cool. I love being able to be different races, with different abilities. 100% better game than Star Trek Federation, which had a similar concept but not the depth or graphics. My only wish is that in addition to PS2, they made in for the PC which could have even more depth. I am very happy the added the Dominion and Cardassians in the game.

I don't think Gene Roddenberry would mind me having fun with his creation
(as a response to the previous review).

Better than expected

Despite how little the game sells for, Bethesda has at least kept their standards and produced a fun, easy to learn, and engaging game. I've been playing too many high powered games on my 360 and PS3 lately and it was pure pleasure to go back to playing a game of Risk. The game does not break any new ground. It simply takes Risk, some minor empire building, and some minor bit of starfleet command and merges it into a surprisingly enjoyable experience.

Great little stocking stuffer.

If I were to compare this with todays uber games, it would have gotten a score of maybe 2 stars. But for what you get for the price, plus the fact that I actually enjoyed this simple little game, it deserves a wholehearted 5.
