disappointment abounds...

I was planning to buy Mass Effect, having enjoyed Baldur's Gate from Bioware. After reading about the DRM copy protection, forget it.

EA will only listen if few people buy their DRM games. I still haven not forgiven EA for destroying Origin (the Ultima games), and they seem to be on their way to destroying Bioware. There are no good game studios left...

Lost another customer...hopefully more.

Count me as another preorder that didn't happen. I've been looking forward to this game on the PC since it came out on the 360, as I'm a big fan of BioWare. However, this new practice of renting single-player software is starting to get ridiculous. EA and Bioware have made NO promises or guarantees that the activation servers or even their support for this game will be around for a specific or unlimited amount of time. Since I often upgrade my gaming system, I'd like to know that I can play this game years down the line, and that I won't have to ask permission from EA to play my owned game in 18 months when I've used up my 3 installations. What is also annoying is that they don't state this at all as one of their great 'features' in their product description...I'm sure it'd be of interest to all the potential customers out there.

Simply put, there are other sci-fi games (Sins of a Solar Empire) that won't inconvenience me as much, and there will probably be more in the future. Vote with your dollars, folks.

Addendum:
To be fair, this is a great game; both the PC and 360 versions, according to gamerankings.com (http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/944902.asp?q=mass%20effect), both versions scored higher than 90% in aggregate reviews from major sites. In addition, the limited installations and security measures may not affect users who don't upgrade their system very often or only play the newest, hottest games once and move on.

However, I usually purchase my games for the long term and I have installed games years after they're released. So again, for longevity, I prefer to own my games rather than ask permission to play them later.

OMG. HL2 all over again

Thanks for the heads up. I was just getting ready to buy this game until I began reading some of the reviews. Sounds like HL2 all over again. Even to this day I have problems playing it even in offline mode. For a week or 2 I got the message "Game is not available. Please check back later" even in offline mode. Maybe it was sunspots. Anyway I foresee even more problems playing this game. Sad that in there greedy attempt to make sure somebody doesn't steal a penney from them bioware and ea may lose a bundle on this game. Sad that those of us who purchase games have to pay for the inconvenience also. It was a sad day when EA purchased Bioware and Obsidian. Guess now were starting to see the results.

Do Away with EA

I don't rate games before I buy them, but what EA is duing to Bioware and this game I think I will make an exception this time.

I was sad to hear Bioware sold out to Electronic Arts (EA), but I also hoped EA would leave Bioware alone. It appears EA has not left Bioware alone and now I am forced to boycott a company that has provided me with many hours of entertainment; I have gone through and cleared out a lot of the old games I had, but the only ones I kept were those done by Bioware and a few other specific games. I have seen this game played by my friend on the Xbox360 and it is a game I would easily give 5 stars for, so you can imagine when he told me they would be releasing it for the PC how much I looked forward to purchasing the game; but with EA dipping their unwanted hands into the mix and adding the SecuROM and only allowing you to install it 3 times ... crap I can't count how many times I have installed previous products by Bioware. Electronic Arts (EA) sucks!

Never going to buy

The DRM flaws that kill your DVD burner, require a constant internet connection, suck up CPU and memory, and prevent you from ever selling/loaning the game to a friend truely make this a worthless product.

I'm really frustrated with the whole crashing thing. I've had crashes before with witcher (but the patches fixed those), but this is something unique. Nothing works from the first run point.

Since my pc is capable of running the game (did my homework first), I hate to be a bit** but it's annoying giving almost 50 euros (that's around $80+) for a game that doesn't work.

Will someone at EA listen to us crying? Will there be a patch, someday, maybe in this century?

Thank you to everyone who has posted there information and to those who have suggested workarounds. The Dev team is hard at work investigating possible hardware and software conflicts as well as other possible causes of these crashes.

If you are still unable to play the game you can connect EA Technical Support: http://support.ea.com/ Please include your Dxdiag (you will be asked for this when submitting a ticket) and as much other pertinent information as possible. You can also include the results of a program called `EAsyinfo', which will help to identify any possible software conflicts. Click Here

I'm locking this thread due to its sheer size, but please be aware that the posts are not being disregarded. I will be posting a new Sticky with some workarounds later today, and further information will be posted there.

Cheers
Scott

Consolitus

Any fun this game could have had is instantly destroyed by the shaky cam, enforced third person viewpoint where one third of your viewscreen screen is constantly blocked by the main character's back. The lack of a first person perspective+getting rid of the nausea inducing wobble cam shows this game to be pure consolitus.

PC gamers don't support Bioware, they're just a cheap console gaming company nowadays, evidenced by the fact they refused to put a first person perspective OPTION into the PC port.

If Bioware release a future patch that offers a first person perspective, I'll re-edit this review, but until then I'll tell every PC gamer in sight to avoid this console port like the plague.

Boycott until EA gets the message!

Send EA a message: Don't buy their games until they stop treating PAYING CUSTOMERS like thieves and criminals. SecuRom does nothing but punish paying customers by taking up time and resources. In effect you do not really "own" any of these games with the registration limitations placed on it. These protections do not even do what they are designed to do: stop piracy. Boycott EA until they respect paying customers rather than assume guilt & treat them like common criminals. Don't let these greedy bastards punish your system with this Securom malware crap.

Not quite ready for prime time

I am running this game on a Core2 2.66 GHz machine with an SLI config consisting of 2 8800GTX NVidia cards. I also have a RAID 5 drive system consisting of 4 standard SATA drives. The performance with this config is very good.

However, there are some serious technical issues with the game.
1. ALT-TAB while in the game (or have a background process like e-mail push up a dialog box) and you cannot get back into the game.
2. Crashes sometimes while attempting to load a new scene into the game (it clearly appears to be split up into multiple scenes even while at the same location).
3. Scene loading sometimes takes up to 1 minute or more (this only happens sometimes, but enough to be annoying). When this happened the first few times I was convinced that the game was hung, only to see the next scene pop up right about the time my finger was hovering over the power button.

I would assume that these issues will be resolved within the first few patches, however if you are the type of person that is willing to wait a bit to have a more stable game, I would give it a few months.

The graphics of the game are pretty incredible; the grain effect adds a startling amount of realism to the game (never seen this effect before and it is COOL). The gameplay is sometimes a bit slow; there is a LOT of interaction in the game that requires a LOT of mouse clicking to select a response when interacting with computer characters in the game.

If you have a good understanding of the general flow of the game (playing the XBOX 360 version, reading the reviews, etc) this is definitely worth it, but if you don't really know what this game is about you really should read some reviews. Although it could be played primarily as a shooter, you won't get anywhere near the most from this game playing it like that.

In summary, technical issues aside, I have mixed feeling about this game. It is unlike most other games out there (best I could come up with is the child of a FPS and WoW), sometimes loses my attention but other times is very cool and exciting.
