Fun Game for Young & Old Alike!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 31 / 31
Date: January 05, 2008
Author: Amazon User

My wife and I bought the Wii version of this game for our 5 yr old son as a Christmas gift. He's a HUGE fan of Ben 10, and we'd previously bought an "Omnitrix Watch" for him because of his interest. He really likes the Ben 10 show, and he loved the movie, "Race Against Time", on the Cartoon Network.

As a 40-something guy w/ a 5 yr old, I wasn't sure if this particular game would be a good fit for my son. While it's rated "E-For Everyone" it also indicates it's for children age "10+". Needless to say my wife and I were worried that it would be beyond his skills and capabilities. (He can't really read yet, after all.)

Well,...I'm here to tell you that this is a really GREAT and FUN GAME! All of my concerns evaporated as my son and I began the journey into "Ben 10 - Protector of Earth", which is the story of how Ben 10 fights various aliens all across America. (Kudos to the game maker for including Seattle, our home town!)

Beyond the fact that this game has helped me bond with my son (remember, he NEEDS me to read the instruction prompts and navigate the game settings) we both fundamentally enjoy playing it together.

As my son says,..."It's fun being friends and playing it!"

Here are a couple of the most compelling aspects:

1) On the "Easy" setting, this is the ONLY video game we've been able to get completely through. (Mind you, I had an old '90's era Sega Genesis "X-Men" game that I've played with him, and we've never been able to get beyond the first few levels. Frustrating for us both!)

2) After you kill all the "bad guy" aliens in each level, a vignette plays,...kind of like a snippet from the TV show. This was great at keeping his attention on the storyline of the game. And quite honestly, the story was so compelling that I kept asking him, "Geesh,...I wonder what's going to happen next!"

3) In each level, there's a specific task to be accomplished. If you're really good at controlling a character's action, you can find "Sumo Cards" that give you access to extra features. My son and I love trying to figure out where to navigate to the "Sumo Cards".

4) As you navigate thru each level, it's CRITICAL to bust-up inanimate objects to get what we call "power-ups" (things that boost your energy or alien strength). It's probably just a guy thing, but my son and I really enjoy going around punching and kicking stuff trying to find "power-ups". Also, I found it interesting that when my son plays with his next-door-neighbor friend (another 5 yr old boy), they don't wrestle as much during play dates. They're too busy busting up light poles, boxes, statues, etc. within the game. In other words, they get to exercise their aggression on the GAME objects, rather than each other. Hoo-ray!

5) While we've only played it on the EASY setting, it was really nice to play this game as simply entertainment. We listened to the storyline vignette, fought the bad guys and got to the next level. All without needing a PhD in video game play. I can't tell you how much it means for a 5 yr old to get to the next level of play and then,...drum roll, please,...actually complete the entire game! Big hugs and high fives went all around! (I'm sure more sophisticated players would be challenged by the harder levels, but we'll never know!)

6) Figuring out how to defeat the "mega bad-guys" takes some skill. There are several points throughout the game when you'll be required to use the Wii remote to target points on the screen in order to defeat the mega bad-guy. Miss the targets and you don't kill the bad guy! My son and I actually enjoyed figuring out which Ben 10 character could best be used to defeat the bad guy, as well as each character's Achilles' heel. (And again, most times he needed my help to aim the remote to lock onto the targets.)

As a guy who simply wants to spend quality time with his son, I owe the folks from D3 (the game publisher) a hearty THANK YOU for affording me this great tool for having some fun and quality time with him.

And in conclusion, I can only offer my son's recommendation about the game. He says, "Get the Ben 10 game! It's fun!"

Now,...if I can just get that "double-click on the Z-Button Jump Move" down, for when we fight Vilgax,...!

Fun game

Fun game. Like the cartoon. It is a little repetitive but you can change which alien you will be
and use their different powers. Challenging with different levels.
Overall, a good buy for children who like the show.

My 7 yr. old loves this! He loves his Wii and he loves the Ben 10 cartoon series and characters, so this is a winning combination for him! The game isn't too hard or too easy and has, so far, kept him entertained.

I bought this game for my 5 year old grandson who is a Ben 10 enthusiast and it has proved to be by far the most exciting Wii game we have so far. My grandson could sit and play it for hours on end although we limit his video game playing time. It is a game that requires you to think so is educational and fun all at the same time.

Great game overall... especially for my 4 year old

My 4 year old is a ben10aholic and we just got a Wii so it seemed like a true fit. I have to say that overall it was a great game for kids for the following reasons

1) There are 3 modes, easy medium and hard and although I have only tried easy, you can die as much as you want and you just restart at the last 'waypoint' or "Go" point and there are tons of them so its not a crying pain when you die. Especially good since my son likes to fall off the cliffs quite a bit.

2) You can play the whole game cooperatively (2 Bens on screen at once) and it works really well and makes the game great for parent/child interaction plus you can help out in the hard parts.

3) The story flows well and introduces all the main Ben 10 characters althoght you only get to play 4Arms, Wildvine, Heatblast, Xlr8 and cannonbolt. The only one my son missed was Wildmutt but its really not that big a deal as jumping between the 5 aliens is more than enough.

The only hard part in the game for my son was the jumping parts and its just a matter of practice due to his smaller hand size.

As for the Wii, it runs on wand + nunchuck and for my sons smaller hands it works better than the classic controller, which is bigger and harder for my son to get his hands around. It says that classic controller works in the manual but I couldnt get it enabled although I didnt try that hard. Not much in terms of wand movements and they could have dropped the wand movements overall in my opinion as they do not really benefit the gameplay.

I would highly recommend this game to any Ben10 fans or anybody who likes cartoon action/adventures.

My son (8 years old) loves the show and when we got a wii, this was an obvious game pick. He plays it all the time now. It's got a good deal of action, lots of different characters, gameplay is nice - even an old man like me can jump in and play along side him and have fun with it. My only complaint is that they could have used the wii controls better or supported a gamecube style controller - that would have made the game even better. Regardless of that, I would recommend it for anyone that likes action scrollers and especially if Ben 10 is a favorite show.

Wonderful for young and old

Great game, I agree w/ all other reviews. Easy to figure out, and my kids are 5 and 10. It is great that 2 Ben's can play at the same time as my 10yo helps my 5yo through the levels. They have since conquered this game, but continue to play it over and over. Now my 5yo can play it by himself, even conquering the big alien 'mini-games' or whatever they are. Love it love it. we also have only played on easy level, but i think time to bump it up a bit!

Play at the same time with your kids (two-player co-op)

There is already a lot said in the other reviews, so I thought I would solely focus on one of the great features of this game. The co-op mode. My son is 5, he still struggles with some of the battles in this game. But you can just fire up another controller and join the battle with your kid. We have a blast trying to smash more than the other. We each try different aliens to see who is better.

It is a lot of fun with some great bonding.

The game itself is OK, the the ability to play together is such a plus!!!

Loads of fun for all ages, easy game to play too

This is a lot of fun to play, no matter your age.

It's what I'd call "gamer lite". It's a gamer type game, but very easy to play.

My only gripe *SPOILER* is that you only get to play as 5 or 6 of the aliens.

One of my favorites, Upgrade, isn't even in there.

*SPOILER* Even at the end of the game when Ben gets all the aliens back, we never even see them!

I hope they do a sequel to this, and include all the aliens.

Excellent Job!

My son and I are big Ben 10 fans. When we got our Wii this past Christmas, we had to try the Ben 10 game. While other popular sites rate the game pretty average, I must say the designers did an incredible job.

The game graphics and overall flow are well put together! We have loads of fun playing the game together in "cooperative mode". The game is exactly like the cartoon series. . . same voice-overs, characters, and action. Even after my son, completed all levels (after 3 days), the game allows you to continue unlocking special features allowing for a different playing experience.

While the game only allows Ben to transform into five heroes instead of ten, you do get an exorbitant amount of exciting combo moves from each hero.

If you know Ben 10, I highly recommend this game!
