Don't buy this game. It's extremely disappointing. I was hoping for a sophisticated puzzle game (as it has consistently been advertised and reputed to be) with an interesting storyline (since a famous film director was involved in its production). Boasting a number of promising elements, the final product just fails to hang together in a satisfying way. The story is nearly non-existent (and what there is is infantile), and the puzzles are almost always either trivial or nearly impossible (or not puzzles at all). It is at best an addictive waste of time. And who in the world would want to create their own levels?

I thought this was going to be lame...

...and I was right!

Okay, so it's not LAME - but it's not that fun, either. I played for a few hours tonight and it was okay. It wasn't good enough to make me want to buy it (I rented it - wanted to give it a test run before laying down my hot, soft cash). The truth is, even when the price goes down in a few months or years, I still won't buy it. An average game at best.

Should have been a $20 game.

This is a simple game with some good play value but it will get old quick and be one of those rarely played ones that end up lost behind your Television.

An okay buy if you're looking for a simple game that a five year old can play but it will not hold much for a teenager or adult. Link's Crossbow Training would be a much better purchase.

Boom Blox disappoints

After all the hype I had high hopes for this game. The concept has a lot of potential, and the capability to create and share your own levels looks great on the box cover. However, the reality I found was that levels I created lack the one interaction that makes the built-in levels fun at all -- that the gem blox explode and disappear when you knock them over. I spent hours trying to figure out how to make this happen for my levels before giving up and accepting that it isn't supported. The built-in levels are fun, but there is way too much out-of-game experience (time spent in menus and scoreboards instead of knocking down blox). Also, I had hoped to play this game with my daughter (4yo), but the interaction with the Wii remote was too involved and frustrating for her even though it looks like its targeted for her demographic (and she is able to play most of the games in WiiSports). Last of all, the much hyped head-tracking easter egg was cut in the final product. This feature was the reason I originally heard about the game (on Johnny Chung Lee's blog), and was a major interest for me in purchasing it. I didn't discover until after I brought it home, and after playing the game for a few days that this easter egg was not included in the final product. Overall, very disappointing. Definitely not worth $60. Maybe worth $30 if the price comes down that far.

Grossly Overrated

The game looks good and is mildly fun but not at all deserving of all the great reviews that convinced me to buy it.

am I the only one with problems

I have a normal Wii (not modded) with the latest updated system code.
I tried 2 retail versions of Boom Blox with 4 different sets of wiimote and have trouble with the cursor.
This is what happens, go off the screen right or left and suddenly the cursor is totally out of sync you have to move the wiimote downwards to get it working correctly, but once you move left or right off the screen the cursor is hosed - I can't believe I'm the only one with this problem.
All other games I have, carnival, striker, brawl, Zelda, wii play, wii sports all play fine with my wiimotes.
So now I'm stuck with a $[...]useless game. The last thing to try is move to a 4:3 TV, maybe this games doesn't work well on WS TV.

Great Idea, Poor Controls

This is a puzzle game for the most part (has adventure mode) and the level design is pretty good, some more challenging than others. I suspect some puzzles may be a bit hard for younger children. The characters are pretty cute and it's a pretty straight-forward game, but the controls need a lot of work. The cursor is not very smooth and goes out of sync easily.

What the game truly needs is a hint system to help the little ones along the way if they get stuck.

And overgrown shockwave game

I'll start off by saying that I've only played this game on single player.

For some reason, this game reminds me a lot of various (better quality) Shockwave block based games games out there that you can play on the Internet. The graphics are only marginally better. It's extremely easy to learn. And it keeps you entertained despite the sub-par graphics.

That said, it's a Shockwave game on some major steroids. You can rotate around quite easily. The controls are obviously much more interactive.

One of the things I love most about this game is it's auto-save feature. After each level, it takes a fraction of a second and saves your progress. Unlike so many other games, you do not have to spend 25 minutes before you get to a point where you can save your progress. This means that you always have the option of putting the game down at any time without losing progress. That said, the challenges will keep you from wanting to put the game down. Last night for instance before heading to bed I wanted to play a video game, but did not want to devote a lot of time. So I played two levels, felt sleepy, and quit then.

The game saves memory by not having great graphics. It makes up for it though by instead having tons of content. There are tons and tons of levels, and I'm looking forward to trying out ones that other people have made. You unlock the next level by beating a level. You unlock more advanced levels by beating levels well. You also unlock things to use in create mode by beating levels well. You will be drawn in by a desire to not just beat a level, but to do so in fewer throws.

One thing I would like to address are the controls. First of all, you'll start wishing that the Wii controller was a bit more ergonomic. Your hand may ache after extended play from having to so finely control the motion of the controller (which does allow greater interaction though).

Another issue, which is the games largest annoyance for me is the limited area in which the cursor works. You have a cursor that you position, and then click a button to lock into place (and then use a throwing motion to fire at that place). There's only a fairly small area of movement for the Wii controller where the cursor will be on screen. I really wish that there were more options for you to define this area for yourself. To get an understanding of this annoyance, go to the Wii menu and move the cursor around. Now make a throwing motion with the controller. Now reposition the cursor, and repeat this a few dozen times.

My final issue with the game is that although you can (usually) rotate around the puzzle, you are limited to only rotating. You can't move around so that the center of the puzzle is not directly in the middle of the screen. You can not zoom in or out. Yet you can move around and zoom in and out in the create mode. It puzzles me and annoys me why this is not possible in the actual game.

New games are not cheap, and I was a bit wary of getting a game that I knew only had mediocre graphics. I was intrigued enough however by the innovative controls and use of the Wii to get the game. The game was worth the money. Despite it's shortcomings, it's a fun, challenging game that's simple to learn, and you can put in as much, or more importantly as little time into as you want.

A fun puzzle blast

A game that has Steven Spielberg's name attached to it in some way, shape, or form deserves some sort of attention, and EA's Boom Blox for the Wii is that such game. A fun, slightly inventive puzzle blast; Boom Blox finds you disassembling, destroying, or just playing around with a series of Jenga-esque blocks. What really makes Boom Blox stand out from the pack though is that the game makes excellent use of the Wii-mote, and as a multiplayer party game, Boom Blox truly shines above all others. If there are any downsides to Boom Blox, it's that the game's story (or lack there of) is more of a distraction than anything else. Along with some moments of repetitiveness, the good outweighs the bad quite a bit: there are a heaping amount of inventive puzzles, and the game's level editor is simply spectacular. All in all, Boom Blox is an inventive, fun, and pretty addictive puzzle blast that doesn't disappoint; and for puzzle lovers and party-game lovers alike, the game is an essential addition to your Wii library.

I usually don't leave comments but I had to for this one.

I have enjoyed Mario Kart Wii, Wii Fit, Endless Ocean, and Wii Sports. I don't know about this one. I just bought it today an I play a good 3 hours. I have mixed feelings about this one. I like games that make you think but this is a strange game. I was very excited by all the good reviews but I didn't have as much fun playing this Bloom Box as I have with other I named above.

Although I would play this game again some other day I don't look forward to play it as much as Mario Kart. It is a slower game that takes time. It gives me the feeling like I am playing Solitare. Listen, if you are thinking about getting this game I suggest you spend the 5 bucks and rent it before buying. I agree with the other guy/gal that said that this game should have been priced at 20 bucks.

I am giving it 4 stars because I do think that this game is very original. It is will made! Also, I believe it has potential as a 2 player game.
