Long on fun, but too short a game

As a huge fan of "The Shield", I was ecstatic when I heard they were releasing a game based on the hit television show. It took three different release dates, but it finally came out. And I figured the game would tide me over until the new season of The Shield started.

Wrong.

The game is based on a "lost episode" where Vic, Shane, and Ronnie must make a high profile bust in order to keep the Strike Team together. This is supposed to bridge the end of Season 3 to the beginning of Season 4. Vic and the team must get MP5's out of the hands of the One Niners and the Byz Lats, as well as find the supplier.

First, the pro's. The graphics are top notch and very fluid. The voices of Vic, Shane, Ronnie, and Acevada are the original actors. (Lem does not appear in the game, except for a video at the game's introduction). And the game allows you to make choices when it comes to dispensing "justice". You can do things by the book and keep your heat low, or you can do things Vic's way and take your chances. Contraband and money can either be turned in, or kept towards your "retirement fund".

The con's. This is not like Grand Theft Auto, where you can do a lot of free roaming, though in some places (like the Barn) you can do some interaction. But it is only simple lines like "Dutch?", "What up, G?", and "You ain't the top dog no more." There are occasional glitches that pop up (being able to see through a wall if your pressed up close enough). And sometimes the control can be a little spotty.

But the worst problem with this game is that it is too damn easy and too quick to complete. I bought the game early Wednesay afternoon, and was done by dinner time. No exaggeration. The missions are ridiculously short and simple for the most part. I was very disappointed that a game that had such great graphics and potential took less than three hours to finish.

Rent the game. You won't need it for more than a day or two.

The Shield video game, which has sat in development hell for what seems like an eternity thanks to original publisher Sammy folding, is finally here; and it we would have been better off with it still sitting on hiatus. It's always a gamble adapting a hit, TV show to the video game world. Sometimes you get good results (X-Files: Resist or Serve), and sometimes, not so much (24). The Shield falls into that category, and while it features some good voice acting, that's about the only feature of the game that remotely comes close to being redeemable. Pretty much a lost episode of the series (taking place after the third season), The Shield puts you in the role of dirty cop Vic Mackey, in the midst of the disbanding of his Strike Team. During the game, you'll track down crooks, interrogate perps, and so forth, but none of it gets to be nearly as fun as it should be. These game elements are accompanied by some stealth missions, hand to hand combat, and naturally, the dirty cop business which includes planting evidence and stealing. However, thanks to some terrible controls and touchy response, everything gets lost in translation. Not to mention that the game itself boasts some just plain awful graphics, and the storyline itself seems to try so hard to be gritty that it just winds up being laughable, not to mention some atrocious dialogue to boot. As said before, the voice acting is pretty decent, and includes show regulars Michael Chiklis, Walt Goggins, and more. That being said, The Shield is a terrible game that even die hard fans of the show should avoid at all costs. No matter how much you love the hard hitting show, avoid this game; it's another prime example of a game not doing justice to it's license when the developer (or new publisher) doesn't put the effort into making some memorable, which a Shield video game could have been.

I am a huge fan of the TV show and absolutely needed to have this game. I read some reviews that stated that this game may be too easy, but I do not find that to be true for me. I do not play my Playstation very often and consider myself a novice. My playstation may sit for months at a time before I blow the dust off of it and play some games. When I got the Shield I did just that. I've been having great fun with it. The graphics are good, the action is exciting, and the R-rated soundtrack is amusing. Good times will be had by any Shield fan who plays this game!

I bought this game as a gift and the person that I bought it for LOVES it! He says that it is a lot of fun and that the overall game is great! Of course he wanted it because he is a "The Shield" series fan.

Really disappointing

There should have been a lot more to this game. There is no free roaming capability. You do not drive a car once in the whole game. It simply goes from one mission to the next, where you beat or shoot a bunch of dudes, sneak past a couple dudes and then slap answers out of a main dude. With games like True Crime: New York and even The Getaway as a guide this game could have been really good. As it is if you are a huge The Shield fan it is slightly entertaining but on its merit as a video game it is horrible and a ripoff for anyone who purchases it.

This is a pretty good game. It follows all your favorite people and along the same time line as the series. It offers good action such as shoot outs with bad guys and three different weapons you pick up along the way. You get bust guys and search them for guns and drugs and eithier keep them for retirement or turn them in as a good cop if you feel like it or need to take the heat off you in the game. It not the most over the top game there is but it should offer any player a pretty good challenge. For what it is I was surprised. This game is a least worth checking out plus the price is right I say go for it.

This game is alright, but I would love to be able to just travel the streets of Farminton. However, it is a good game to add to your Shield collection.
