Dancing To Reality

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 3 / 6
Date: December 01, 2007

When it comes to reality shows, none has really shined surprisingly like ABC's Dancing With The Stars. The show has really brought out surprisingly names back into the mainstream from John O' Hurley, who now hosts Family Feud, to classic teen idols like this years favorites' Marie Osmond and Mel B. from The Spice Girls. Nevertheless, what may come great as a reality show, doesn't actually mean it will come around in succession as a video game. That unfortunately has proven to be the case with American Idol, which has tanked as a selling point for video game fanatics. Now, it is Dancing With The Stars turn to see if it really hot, hot hot.

Dancing With The Stars for the Playstation 2, is a better edition of the game, rather than the one for the Nintendo Wii which only enables you to manuver with just the Wii remote and nunchuck controller, as you move your entire body on the specialty dancepad, as you dance your way to classics like the cha-cha, the mambo, and many others. In the game, you play as classic contestants from the show including Mario Lopez, season 3 winner former football great Emmot Smith, and many others including instructors like Cheryl Burke. The graphics are fair, but the gameplay falls similar to what we've seen from Dance Dance Revolution, but doesn't completely do enough to entice new gamers who are really into music games like Dance Dance Revolution, Guitar Hero or the new Rock Band.

All in all, Dancing With The Stars is a fair concept, but unfortunately the feeling is for die hard Playstation 2 owners is that we've seen it before and it doesn't do enough to bring new gamers in. I instead recommend another title like Dance Dance Revolution instead for anyone who really wants to be swept off their feet.

Upper body aerobic and music

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 1 / 1

Unlike dance revolution etc., which focuses mainly on lower body movement, this game focuses on upper body motion. The player engages in a series of challenging patterns that encourage upper body aerobic patterms and eye-hand coordination with an entertaining musical score.

Like dance revolution, the coordination of patterns are generally rythm based which enhances the player's ability to hear and follow music rythm, which is vital for all forms of dance and music appreciation

The player can "cheat only themselves" by limiting their motion range just to "beat" the game or they can use the game for its true benefit, rythmic upper body aerobics, and training in personal musicality

You won't learn to ballroom dance from the game, but the graphics of the professional dancers on the screen correctly depict the dance styles, dancers will appreciate this effort, and novices can watch the styles (although the styles are mostly International, not American which is taught in most U.S. studios).

It is fun, visually and musically stimulating, and a good addition to your own personal wii-fitness experience.

K I'll start off with the negatives first to get that out of the way.

One of the main issues I have is that there are some celebs missing that shouldn't be, like Kelly Monoco who won season 1 with her pro partner Alec. Why they were missing I dont get, also missing was Drew Lachey now granted Cheryl is in the game with Emmitt but why not have her in the game twice? She did win two times. Also missng was Apollo and Joey Fatone and my fav pro Julianne. I dont buy the whole "the game couldn't be updated in time" because Maks and Laila were included and they were on in the same season as Apollo and Joey yet she came in third, how does that work?

Another flaw in the game is the arrow situation. In order to score well you have to hit as many arrows as possible and get as many "perfect" hits as possible however when dancing the Rumba it is very difficult because you dont get as many arrows to hit so the ones that do come you have to hit them perfectly which is VERY VERY difficult therefore I find myself stuck having to re-dance the rumba over and over again just to advance in the rounds which is annoying. They should have added more bonus points to the rumba's to make it fair.

Last negative I found is the fact that the game doesn't have enough variety. The couples can dance as either amatuers or professionals however the difference is not really that far apart. One couple dancing amatuer who becomes pro still dances the same numbers, same outfit same everything only difference it you have to have a score of 24 or higher to advance in the rounds whereas as an amatuer you need to have a score of 20 or higher. I think they should have made the profesional dances different from the amatuer ones, changed the outfits and really made it different so one doesn't get bored too fast with the game and dancing the same dances over and over again.

Now for the positives...
Great music, love most of the tracks, they really tried to find authentic latin music as opposed to the actual show which uses pop music and tries to pass it off as Latin which it is NOT! Some dances in the game that are supposed to be latin had pop music but not many which made me happy. Another plus is the graphics, dont know why the other person said the graphics were rated at a "C" cause there not. The graphics are wonderful IMO! The outfits are also great.

If you're a dancing with the stars fan GET THIS GAME!

I give it 4 out of 5 stars

Great fun for the whole family

This game was a Christmas present for my kids, and has proven to be a big hit. My 11 year old who dances in a company thought she would be a natural, but has yet to beat her 38 year old dad (what can I say, I got moves). Getting the moves down and improving is part of the whole process, and rewarding as your scores go up. I would recommend this for anyone who enjoys having fun with their family or friends and perhaps has a competitive spirit. It will even give you a work out when you compete as a professional. Enjoy.
