Quake 4: Just as reliable as prior versions.

There have been many games that I have played that have taken my breath away, but not one that continues to do so with every single frame: This game is without a doubt the most intense FPS I have played in a long time.

You keep hearing people go on and on about Half-Life 2: A game that requires you to go online to play the single player (what why).

I haven't the foggiest what people see in that game other than the fact it was a wonderous project, but it had one flaw: It was a linear game. Go to this room, go to the next room, and don't go back and don't go to any of these other rooms or buildings or anything like that because we didn't make it... ugh. I loved the game, don't get me wrong, but there are flaws in such a linear setup. Quake 4 is linear as well, but as soon as that draws to a close, you're playing multiplayer on any of the old / new maps they've put on there, and you're having a good time all over again.

The single player is wonderful, with a great story and a great engrossing pace. Nothing is too difficult, but nothing is to easy. The sound on this game is great, so long as your sound card is OpenAI compliant, and if you have a decent machine (i'm running an athlon xp 2600 w/ 1gig of ram and a nvidia geforce 6600 w/256 meg), you'll do fine. In fact, I'm running it with everything on, and it takes a second to load, but once it does, OH GOD I MADE A MESS: it's gorgeous... wow. Without a doubt, the most creepy, horrific experience I've had in a FPS without being frightened in a long time.

I mentioned previously that the game was fast: that's an understatement: This game is REALLY fast. It's pace is beyond that of any other game I've played recently, and wow: it's amazing that such a pretty game can move so quickly.

I've been playing it since I got it at roughly 11 am Tuesday, October 18th, and man, I went through more chips and caffine by myself than I would at a network party.

I would say that the graphics are great, but that's an understatement. The graphics are nigh perfect... I'm in love with the engine, and just how they've made quake it's own game, and not borrowed anything from doom at all, really. This game has it's own look, feel, heck, it has it's own ecosystem, it seems.

The AI is also GREAT. I was decending a stairwell on one of the levels, and there are all these barrels, explosive mind you, that I could push down the stairs... OH man, now that was a trip. They kept trying to get away, and I kept knocking them down, and man, it was wicked; they kept trying to get away, and I kept chasing them with explosive barrels... The room actually took me a few times to get down, but once I did, OH MAN... that was the coooooolest thing ever.

I don't know how much of a fan you guys are of this series, but it's a must-have for anyone who has enjoyed a previous John Carmack game, because he, yet again, delivers.

I would reccommend this to anyone who asked me about it for three reasons:

A) graphics.

2) sound.

D) environments.

Yes, it's a good game. I am flabberghasted that no one has reviewed this before me, but I do know that I will be playing it again when I get home. OH YEAH, I will be playing this until I can't play it anymore, and then I will get online and KILL YALL. oH YEAH.

good game.

Disappointing for the Quake III lover.

Executive Summary: This is almost like Doom 3. If you like Doom 3, you'll probably like this. If you wanted a game like Quake 3, you'll be disappointed. The plot is repetitive like many games.

The death match multiplayer reminds me of Quake 3, but what I really enjoyed about Quake 3 was the single player w/ the great bots. For me I'm very sad that I bought this game. :-(

Great SP, not great MP

I'm a Quake addict from the Wolfenstein era. Great Single player. Not as scary or biting your nails type of intensity. Doom III is, I think better for that. However, I'm disappointed in the multiplayer. It seems like Quake 3.2. Same maps. Nothing really new. You would seem like your playing the third of the series. Graphics are not like the SP. I wish. They're more like III. I was very disappointed. They didn't even put any effort to get any new maps. Forget about vehicles. I thought I was gonna ride a mech style vehicle. Wasn't worth 60 bucks. Wait until it's 30. In the meantime, the best and most fun MP game I've ever played is Call of Duty United Offensive. Try it. It'll get even cheaper when version 2 comes out next week.

Truly a worthy sequel to the fantastic Quake series

To other reviewers: Reserve judgement till you finish the game. It just gets better and better.

For the rest of you:

****Warning**** Some spoilers below.

Gameplay: The gameplay is fairly basic but still loads of fun. There is some prudence needed on your part, you can't just run and gun all the time and expect to get through.

Weapons: The weapons upgrade is a great idea. Even your weaker weapons at the beginning of the game can be used later in the game for more punch. And they are all useful. The machine gun is great to snipe enemies at a moderate distance. The nail gun is my favorite (especially later in the game). I wish the railgun and the BFG was more powerful though. And I did not like that the railgun has to be reloaded after 3 shots, especially since there is a charging time.

Enemies: This is one of my favorite elements of the game. The enemies are just amazing to watch. They have brought back the Gunner, Beserker, Gladiator, etc. with excellent detail. I wish they didn't disappear after they are dead. So sometimes I get myself killed just so I can get a better look at them. The AI maybe lacking a bit, but that is easily forgiven because of the damage these enemies can do at the harder settings. The bosses are a sight to behold.

Level Design: Amazing, detailed, probably the best I have seen in an FPS. You should upgrade your PC if you haven't done already, it is worth the experience.

Sound: The game sounds are absolutely incredible. The weapons sound very convincing. There is always some chugging and whirring in the background to immerse you in the industrial strogg atmosphere. Do yourself a favor and turn the volume up. The only weak point is the music, the score could have been a lot better (Halo raised the bar a little too high for me, unfortunately).

Kudos to Id and Raven for a spectacular game. We want more! Bring on the expansion packs! I can't wait 6 years for another sequel.

Quake whoops doom

Ok well first of all i just have to say that i have played both doom 3 and quake 4. quake 4 owns doom 3 and ill tell you why. first of all doom does have fantastic graphics, but really nothing else. the entire doom game is repetive. ur in a building the whole time and this is really agriavting and boring. Quake for being made by mostly the same guys, also brings graphics that match doom's and is suprisingly similar but quake takes the good things that doom had and left behind all the bad that came with doom. so basically it is better, or an improvement on doom.
Quake 4 allows u to use weapons and vehicles and takes place in many different areas, such as indoor facilities and outdoor wastelands. quake 4 also has terrific AI that i was extremely impressed with. i havent beaten the game but there is supposed to be large scale warefare as well as small encounters. Quake 4 also doesnt get boring at all, unlike doom did very quickly. i Also hear the the multiplayer,(which is online), is fantastic. that alone should be worth your fifty. although there is one thing; if enjoy being scared, doom does a better job at it than quake, but then again, thats all that it does better than quake.

not worthy of the quake name

this game like many recent titles greatly improves in the grapics arena while making gameplay more acessible and "dynamic", too bad they forgot what ppl loved about the prevoius game. why waste money to repeatedly buy new computer hardware for games like this? answer: don't!

A DOOM 3 repeat...nothing new !!!

I would take a guess and say the ONLY people that will give this game a high rating will be kids 16 or younger.

If you have played DOOM 3, then you have already played Quake 4!

I was wondering why this game slipped out onto store shelves and was released to retail without any great fanfare. Now I know why! It is basically the new Doom, except the weapons have flashlights. I am not impressed at all. I beat this game on the hardest setting no problem. The enemies are not particularly clever, just greater in number. Talk about predictable...this game was that in spades. Sadly, you can finish this game in 10 hours or less....YUCK!

Quake 4 is built by the same team using the same graphics engine. I didn't like DOOM 3 much either but it was a great deal better than this. Yes, the graphics were average. I have a AMD 64bit 4000+, an NVIDIA 7800 256MB GTX, 2 sticks of Corsair 1GB 3200 DDR modules, and a Viewsonic 19 inch VP191b monitor. And with all that power, and with Quake 4 video settings cranked up to the highest settings...it still was rough and mediocre looking!! However, the Quake series was never known for its stunning graphics and beauty. Mainly, I felt there was nothing hard to accomplish or figure out. Basically this game did not fill the 1st person shooter void within me. I am a huge fan of id software and have played every Doom or Quake title they ever released, when they were originally released. Yes, I have been playing computer games since my old Commodore 64 was delivered!!!

This is just my opinion though. Download a demo version and give it a whirl but I doubt you will want to pay $50 for it.

That said, I bet multiplayer on this will be a blast after some MODs are created and released. I have hosted 5 different lan parties for this game and we yawned through it until we gave up and switched over to Battlefield 2 or UT 2004! MUCH BETTER MP ACTION!!!!

In summation -
Enemy AI is lame, graphics are weak, a few cool "factory" scenes but no reason to go crazy for this title, gameplay is predictable, weapons are mediocre, limited interactive environment, nothing thrilling, exciting or shocking that will keep your tension levels cranked up to 11.

Half-Life 2, Battlefield 2, UT 2004, GTA: San Andreas even the older and outdated Medal of Honor and Call of Duty games will keep you stressed and excited better than Quake 4.

Save your money....Call Of Duty 2 comes out this week anyway!

My kind of game

Personally I like FPS like this. I just want straightforward no frills gameplay to blow off steam and Q4 fills the bill. Looks very similar to Doom 3 with more color and better lighting. Not as compelling as HL2, and a little overpriced. I'm only a third of the way into it, but I've had no glitches. I still play Q2 even though it's dated. If you liked Q2 you'll like this. Never got into Q3-arena type stuff bores me.

I didn't like doom 3 and I don't like Quake 4. I can't believe they suckered me again. I assumed after all the complaints about Doom 3 that ID would get off their collective asses again fix the gameplay problems. But here I was again, a rat in a dark maze, killing enemys that pop out in laughably predictable places. Open a door and "OH MY GOD" there's another one! Ha Ha. I quess I'll have to wait for the next Half-life installment.

Buggy, tired game

This is just an unfinished Doom 3 Re-hash. It's full of bugs too. Settings don't stick, and the game crashes every time I try to use alternate fire.

Very thin on story and lousy voice acting as well.
