Save the $40, buy the real Bionicle toys...

I'm a huge gamer, and a big Lego fan as well. When I heard about the concept for Lego's new line of action figures, I was fascinated. When they hit the store shelves, I didn't hesitate to bring them home and spend hours assembling and redesigning the brilliantly designed, yet affordably priced, toys.

The game is dark. Sure, most GBA titles suffer the same fate of having the passively illuminated screen. But this one takes the prize. Don't get me wrong, the graphics are great, but even with my usual halogen lamp behind me (adjusted so I don't get the glare) I'm still unable to make out many of the details.

Controls are clumsy. Your character takes giant, awkward steps that make it hard to navigate in tight areas. There is also an arbitrary arrangement of seemingly useless bits that you have to walk around. That's fine, that's what games are for, and no one wants a straight line, but the objects make no sense in the game. In the first village, there are what look like little oil spills that you just can't walk over. Houses, trees, rocks; fine. Little dark patches on the ground? No sense.

The second village and subsequent missions will only further illustrate my points... Try to navigate the chain of islands by jumping and slingshotting to them and you will feel my pain. I LOVE a challenging game that tests hand-eye coordination and quick action, but this game only serves to frustrate.

Also imagine my surprise when I get to village #2 and my mission is the same as the first one! Get two crystals, a staff, and a stone. Most games have a running theme, or similar missions, but this one is just the same ones with different (barely) bad guys.

I'm afraid Lego has now suffered the same fate as many, many other game developers: the Time Crunch. They rushed it to market without test playing it. Release date is always more important than release quality. They could have really done something with this title, but they failed.

To be fair, I will play this game through to the end and see if it redeems itself. But I don't have high hopes.

The Bionicle toys are first rate and their newer parts with ball/socket design allow for freedom of movement never before seen with Legos. You can buy all 6 Toa (the 'bigger' figures)for less than the cost of this game. I suggest you do that instead.

Great Fun for Hardcore Bionicle Fans, not for Young Kids!

Based on a scale of 1-10, 10 being best...

GRAPHICS: -8- Great graphics! Animation is beautiful, characters are highly detailed. The extra animations used for stumbling and slipping bring a smile every time. Colors are a little dark for my taste, since GBA has lighting issues to begin with. Terrain could use a little more work... it's kinda' bland, and sometimes hard to distinguish rises from falls. I wish it would let you change mask types during character creation... it'd be nice to explore the village houses also, but no-can-do.

GAMEPLAY: -7- Great character handling, though diagonals are tricky to aim with. Lots of fun items to use, and a nice range of enemy difficulties (better be quick, and I mean *quick*, or you'll get bonked!). Mini games aren't really fun in themselves, but they provide a welcome break from the "smack-a-bug-in-the-head-with-fruit" routine. Levels *can* be repetitive and frustrating- "secrets" are well hidden (due to confusing terrain graphics) and in-game hints are often vague or non-existent.

SOUND: -4- Sound effects are well executed, but the music is *utterly* annoying! It repeats practically every 16 beats, and is very unappropriate for the situations (fast-paced danger music in a town without enemies, etc.). It seriously stressed me out! Thank goodness you can turn it off in the options! Ditch the music, and I'll give it a -6- for sound.

BIGGEST GRIPE: The townspeople. I really love this game, but there's a serious lack of development in the game characters. They babble about nothing... usually two people per town have something worth hearing. In fact, almost all the characters in a town say the same thing. You can stand and talk to one character repeatedly and hear everything that will be said by the others- it's like a generic dialog loop. Some good character depth would really flesh this game out.

FINAL THOUGHTS: If you're a hardcore Bionicle fan, you'll love it. If you don't even know what Bionicle is, stay far, far away. Younger Bionicle fans will probably have some difficulty with the game speed and required precision.

A Game For Those Who Are Vigilant

I thought that the bionicle toys were pretty cool and so when my brother got this game I was expecting the best. Well, the graphics are the most amazing I've seen in any GBA game; they truely show the best of what a GBA can do. That's about the only reason I rated this game three stars. That and the exetremely fun minigames. The first two levels you start out with are fairly easy, but after that it is extremely hard - nearly impossible. It is the most frusterating game I have ever encountered. Plus, the worlds are hard to navigate through. Sometimes you have to jump or throw at bizarre angles, and there are little things like rocks and patches of grass dotting the terrain that you can't walk or jump over. Some of the monsters are very very hard to beat, and when the kill you, you have to start back at the beginning of the level (all of them are very long). So if this is the kind of game you enjoy, by all means buy it. Otherwise don't waste your money.

Not that great.

I bet a lot of you think this is going to be a great game. think again. this game is pretty bad. the graphics aren't to good. the gameplay is somewhat dull. there is really no way to navigate where to go next or what to do next. while it is somewhat bad I gave it a 4 star rating because the concept was okay and I think they could make it a whole lot better in maybe a sequel. But seriosly, you should heavily consider renting this from some place like blockbuster or borrowing it from a friend before you buy it. see ya later!

My son received the game for his birthday. He already has many
of the "Lego" toys of the Bionicle story. He really loves the
game because he can really get the feel about the story of
the island and then he can take what he played on the game and play with his Bionicles.

This game rocks

This game is really fun,it has awsome graphics and is packed with over 20 levels. You get helpful items such rocks, fruit, snowballs, and disc. You also will have to face creatures such as a rock monster, spiders, scorpions, bigger scorpions, and a gaint frog like creature. There are 6 mini games. My favorite one is the foot ball game so far. Well I'm only in the 3rd village because I can't figure out how to get the toa stone or how to deal with this big ugly scorpion and save Onewa the turaga of Po-Koro. If you ever get this game I hope you can do this part that I'm having trouble with.Hope this review was helpful.

If you are an extreme lego fanlike me and every time they come out with a new theme you have to have it. Then I'm sure you've heard about the new bionicle theme. I already have all the toa. I think this is one of the coolest themes yet. So I'm sure the game is going to as cool as the sets. As soon as this comes out I'm getting it. If you love the new bionicle you should get it too.

Great Game, but codes?

This game is awesome, but as far as the codes go, which this website says you can use the codes from the bionicles toys in the game, I havn't found that section yet in the game. I think they may have taken that part out, or maybe it's in the computer game. The game gets tough at certain parts, but it's very fun!
