Rise of Nations rising to the top of the charts!

First off, please let me say one thing, Windows XP users should have no probelms with this game! I've seen a few reviews about peoples games freezing and it's not true really. XP works fine! One thing I don't understand is why everyone who has a problem writes a review just because they think it's the game when it's really their computer. You need to watch what you say.

On a better note, this game is worth the $! Yes, the development goes a little quicker, but come on, would you rather have a game go on for 3 hours and still be stuck in the gundpowder age? Here it goes quicker, and this could turnoff alot of people, but it's the game, and it's how it would be. this game has excellent performance, I've got a Alienware Extreme, 200gig,3ghz,pentium proccessor, so of course it works great, but many people can play it. It gives you a sense of reality too, personally for me it's the gunpowder - enlightment ages I like the best because I like the old fighting with the cannons and the muzzle to muzzle fighting. This is definently a 5 out of a 5 and is a must buy! Have fun gamers and see you online!

Great (for a limited time)

I've played this game 2 days and its already gotten tiresome...
Once u become familiar with all the features it tends to get boring, especially with no missions/campaigns or different gameplay options besides the a bunch of scenarios and the usual "survival of the fittest". The graphics and features are however great, and the national identities are quite convincing.

Great!!

I haven't gotten the full version of the game yet but the demo is just so good. The A.I. is very challenging, even on easy mode with codes I had a hard time beating them.
There are some very good things on quick battle (by quick battle they mean a couple of hours) first are the wonders that range from the pyramids to the space project. Each one gives you very useful upgrades like being immune to the Armageddon problem (see later) and full map view. The next thing is that now you build cities to extend your territory.
There is one problem with playing early eras, you spend about an hour before anybody dies in combat. But there is one other very annoying problem they put in to add realism, after launching 10 nuclear weapons the world becomes a barren wasteland and everybody dies and loses.
The system requirements are a lot more than what you need to play, I'm running a P.II 233mhz and a 32mb video card and I have had almost NO slowdowns.
When I finally get the full version of this game I will probably never be heard from again. Go out. Buy the game. And See how great this game really is!

The best RTS ive played

Ive played quite a few RTS (real time strategy games) includeing civilization, age of empires, age of mythogloy, empire earth etc. But out of all of them this is my favorite. You can choose to do a campaign, or a quick battle. The campign while intresting could of had a much better delivery. It much like risk where you have to conquer the world on a old world map, only much eaiser. Even if youve never played the game before id recomend playing it on easy (not easiest) or medium. And even then beating it can take about a week.

The qucik battles are fun to do. You can choose how many players you want the map size, terrian, and lots of other things. And once you create the settings of the game its saved to come back to and not have to choose everything again. The quick battles can take a few days if done with lots of countrys playing (5-8) inless you have hours to spend on the game in one day. Also quick battles can be harder if you select the diffuclty of your opponents and if you turn wonder victorys off (if wonder victorys is on it takes like 5-10 minutes for you to win if you build 3 wonders!!!???)

The graphics are good but nothing to be astonished about. The graphics really arent that good giveing rough images of the people and buildings. The graphics dont distract you from the gameplay though and the game really isnt based on graphics at all.

The sounds is nothing special much like the graphics. Although the explosions, bazooka shots, and gun fire dose sound kinda cool its clear not much effort went into sounds as its not needed for the game. The sounds get kind of annyoing since almost every thing you click on makes one. But again there not bad enough or loud enough to distract from the gameplay in any way.

Lastly the gameplay is excelent. The AI can be rather smart when you choose higher diffculties but if you choose easiest you might as well be playing a rock. The gameplay is fast enough to have a good game but not so fast you win in 2 minutes and not know what the heck happend. The only problem with the gameplay is if you use to many nuculear missles everyone loses because of "armagedon" and also that when youve reashearched all technologies you can research for super technologies that basicly make you win one makes it so no missles can land in your nation one makes everything created instantly (thats the one that makes you win) One makes you have no commerce level (lot of supplies) and the last one makes it when you capture a city its instantly yours. All these thing combined makes it almost impossible to lose.

All in all this game is defiently worth buying. All though it has a few cons its worth playing and if you take a brake from it for a month or to when you get tired of it you can come back and have fun playing it.

Great New RTS

I love RTS games. And this game is no different. It is one of the most challenging I have played and that is saying a lot. The graphics in this game are great because you can actually see what each of your civilians is doing.
A cool feature that it has is rare resources. When you find these resources on the map you can send a merchant to go collect them to give you bonuses in different areas of your civilization.
Another cool feature of this game is the addition of national borders. Each city you build has a certain range and allows your borders to expand, you can't however build cities in other people's countries, which makes sense.
When you build a university you have to actually create the scholars inside of it in order for it to be useful, this is just an example of how indepth this game really is.
I find the most fun to be during the WWII period, even though medieval period is my favorite in History.
The battles are massive at times and are always fun. This is a definite must have for any RTS fan.

Fun, challenging, you don't get bored with it....

I only have the trial version because the real game is so expensive, but Rise of Nations is great! It is very easy to play if you have had any of the Age of Empires games. It is a replica except you can pass the age of empires on to the modern world. You start out with one age, and you can update your ages through your libraries studies. It requires a lot of other studies from Military, Civics, Commerce, and Science. If you want, you can build wonders (exp. Statue of Liberty, Versailles, Terra Cotta Army, Space program) but it requires a certain age, a certain amount of stuff (exp. Medevil Age, timber, gold, metal, knowledge, food, oil, etc.). CAUTION: If you start building the same wonder after your opponent does, and your opponent finishes it before you, it destroys the wonder. The Terra Cotta Army wonder is great because it allows you to get armymen always and always. You build barracks, stables, sieges, airbases, missile bases to get people, horses, machines, airplanes, and missiles attacking your opponents. At first, you can only build a barracks and some army people. Then you get to build a stable, and siege. Eventually, a siege factory turns into a factory. Then later, once you get to the industrial age, you can build airplane bases and missile bases. Keeps/Towers/Castles will attack opponents and protect cities, buildings, etc. It cost timber, food, gold, metal, knowledge, etc. to build buildings like cities, farms, lumber mills, metal mills, granaries, etc. too.

Pros
Great graphics!
Cooler than any other game in its class
It is pretty fun to play with a friend
You can be alot of people, go to different ages that Age of Empires doesn't allow you too, and you don't get bored easily because there is always something to do!

Cons
Price!
Sound!
Campaigns are very challenging... I've played the real version once.
When you don't have a lot of supplies you are stuck

RON is a fun game that I played for over 2 months (not everyday of course). If you like Command & Conquer or Lords of the Realm, you should like this game. They have similar fighting scenarios and I like these type of games. I prefer C&C, as far as defending your territory, over this game.

Positives:
1. Very addictive and challenging enough to keep you playing for awhile. Very challenging if you play the harder difficulty, especially defending your territory.
2. It's fun seeing the changes and enhancements through the ages.
3. It has a really great learning tool...I never even needed the instruction booklet, which is rare with complicated games like these (great for kids).

Negatives:
1. I wish the game forced you to stay in an age longer, thus seeing all the maximum achievements of that age. They should create a larger variety of soldiers/weapons within that age and require longer playing times to move on to a new age. The better you accomplish the required goals, the faster you'll move on to the next age. The current method requires you to move faster to the next age, otherwise you'll be way behind and be left as a dead carcass by the enemy.
2. Lack of walls to protect your territory better.
3. The 'Risk' map is a good concept but you should be able to attack anywhere as long as you own that country, they force you to have an army in the attacking country. If you ally within anyone, they can take over most of the world and you still win, so if you want to take over the world on your own, don't ally with anyone.
4. Citizen total is too low (200) and unrealistic.

Overall....it is worth getting and a fun game.

a Video Game with out the Repetitive Boring Work Involved

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 4 / 4

The best part about this game is that the programmers took out a lot of the repetitive work you will usually find in this type of game. For instance... the workers will automatically gather supplies or build buildings, your troops will line up efficiently with a click of a button, and research is done very quickly. This allows you to get right into the action.

An earlier reviewer complained that it is hard to defend your city. In most games like this you can always set up enough trenches, look out towers, walls, etc; that you do not have to worry about the defense of your territory. Not worrying about defense is unrealistic.

This game is turn based with real time battles. The turn-based part of this game looks like a game board from Risk. When you attack or get attacked then the game turns into real time where you fight the battles.

Graphics look good when you are zoomed all the way in, but I rarely find myself zooming all the way in to admire the graphics. You need to be zoomed all the way out to watch the progress of your territory and armies. So the beautiful graphics are just a waste of computer power and result in slower load times.

I rated this game 4 stars because of the superb programming. I did not rate it 5 stars because the turn-based part of this game is not that deep so everyone's strategy will be pretty much the same. Playing with the same strategy over and over again will result in this game getting old with a couple months of playing.

One last thought; if you're a fan of Sid Meier's Civilization this game's turn-based play will disappoint you.

Cool and fun

Great strategy game with lots of possibilities. It may seem kind of basic at first but after playing it once you will be hooked, especialy fans of the civilazation series.
