lacking in some important areas

Terrain and elevation don't affect gameplay at all, and you don't have walls that you can build. So the game begs you to play offensively. This is really disappointing and limiting to gameplay strategies. Also, though you can toggle some of the settings to make the game progress thru advancements more slowly, the default setting pushes major technology changes every 5 minutes! What is the point of entire Ages of Humanity going by so quickly? You can pause the game and make adjustments, but basically this is an RTS with a slightly more complicated technology tree. If you like Civilization, you may greatly dislike the limited depth and speedy pace of this game.

Good Game

Pat Emerson doesn't know what he is talking about. There is a single player mode on RoN that isn't the Risk-type one. It's called "Quick Battle". Overall, the game is really cool. You can set troops in different formations to help with strategies. (You'll have to turn on the Advanced Options in game though, it isn't that hard to.) I would reccomend this to anyone. it is really that good.

Great Idea!

While the single player gets a little repetative, after a couple of months, the multiplayer is rock solid. Crossing calssic strategy with a SIM-city style evolution of a city and the strategy style of Risk when you switching maps is really brilliant. It was the natural progression of Strategy games and I don't know why it wasn't done before. M$ has really outdone itself on this one.

Theres no way to decribe it, this game is just the best. 18 nations (24 with expansion pack on april 28th) all sorts of maps and modes, great graphics. NOT another remake of AoE.

If you like strategy games then this one is for you. It keeps you absorbed for hours. Amazon delivered my game promptly and at a great price too! I also bought the expansion pack Kings and Patriots.

Great game, if only the graphics were better

Don't get me wrong, the graphics are quite nice in this game, but after being exposed to the beautiful artwork in Age of Mythology, they seem much to close to the graphics of Age of Kings. They are better than this, more color detail, but in essence, it is exactly the same. I was extremely disappointed in the nuclear missle graphic. I expected this to be very glorified, but it wasn't at all.

The campaign is excellent. There have been complaints of the campaign not having a story, but that's fine. You can find campaigns on the internet with a story. This one has multiple dimensions. You can play as France and unite Europe, or you can play as the Incas and unite with the French against the British. The campaign is turn-based as well, which may be a turn-off for some people (it was for me), but it actually makes it more easy to play and decide who to attack next.

The game adds a lot of depth and features that were attractive to many RTS players, but would never get because the whole idea of a turn-based game seemed awkward. Rise of Nations combines these features into a real-time strategy game, making it possibly one of the most advanced RTS games. It will take some getting used to however, because the resource system is completely redesigned and unique. Whether you play turn-based or real-time games, this game will take you some getting used to.

How Boring! History lesson?

Got ya in with the title...now I will give you a real reaction to the game. For the price it is right now, it is not worth it. I picked the game up fairly cheap in comparison. It is none-the-less a very well developed game, yet My history degree gets in the way...Yep I hear you calling me a nerd! Anyway... I get pretty into this game and Micro$ofts last release which was, Age of Mythology by Ensemble Studios in my opinion was a decent price for about the same magnitude of gaming, but does not have the options and controls that Rise of nations has. All in all I believe they are both games that are fun and make you strategize, but wait for the price to go down.

Has It All

Most likely the greatest thing about Rise of Nations is the ability to pick it up whether you're familiar to real time strategy games or not. Also, the same concept applies for fans of the genre. That aside, every single gamer should own this game. Rise of Nations is just incredible. It has superb graphics, great story line, is fun to play all around, and has great tutorials. After the hundreds of video games I've played, Rise of Nations is my FAVORITE. It is impossible to describe the awesomeness of this game. If you're not a real time strategy game, you'll love this game so much that it will get you interested in the genre. If you're a RTS fan and you don't have this in your collection, I hereby consider one of the most ridiculous people ever to live. NO gamer should have any hesitation on picking up this game. There is not a single flaw about it. It's face paced, lengthy, and has a great multiplayer (you can go online with it for free)! This game is incredible and you will not be able to put it down. I can't wait for Rise of Nations: Throne and Patriots to come out (expansion pack).

Remember the days of tweaking autoexec to get game working?

Well, this game seems to take you back to those days. Really, i can't remember the last time i had to (...) with video settings to get a game to work! My system meets minimum requirements, and worked fine for about 10 hours, now i can't get it to run at all. So I searched online forums and this seems like a fairly common problem.

So unless you have fairly new hardware (and even that's no guarantee), prepare yourself for some pain. What a shame, cause the game seemed pretty fun. Microsoft should be ashamed of themselves for release such shoddy software, but then again, I guess that's what they do best...
