Something Old and Something New

In this newer version of Hoyle board games, is the inclusion of word games; Word Yacht, Doublecross, and Wordox. Word yacht is similar to boggle in terms of making as many words as you can out of a group of letters. Wordox is similar to Scrabble. Double Cross is similar to Upwords with some twists thrown into the game. Bump 'em is also a newer game; sort of like Aggravation using cars. It is my favorite game because anything can happen. You can be losing the game and then suddenly win. The blend of games is great so anyone can find a game they like.
Unfortunately, if you want this game to play online; there have been issues with the Facemaker being recognized on the website used to play the games online. I didn't like the newer characters in this new version of the game. It seems like Hoyle is trying to appeal more toward adults by having more adult characters who are competitive in how they respond to your moves during a game. They can get annoying and seem less friendly than the older versions I have had.
I still think this is a great series. Hopefully the online thing will improve with the Facemaker. Even so; I enjoy having the new games added to the board game series. I still think it is worth buying. The games are fun as well as timeless.

I just got the game today and my 8 yr old son and I are having a ball. This is exactly what I was looking for. Had I known about it sooner, I would've ordered it. The main reason I bought this was because members of my family (up to 4 people) can play the games against each other instead of always playing against the computer like other board games cd-roms. Of course you still have the option of playing against the computer too. I don't know if Hoyle Table Games 2004 has the same capability. The graphics are sensational. They really look like the real board games. My son got a kick out of the noises it makes. Before purchasing, I tried desperately to find out exactly what games were on it and couldn't. So for those interested some of the games it has are Backgammon, Battling Ships, Checkers, Chess, Chinese Checkers, Dominoes, Double Cross, Mahjong, Mancala, Pachisi, Reversi, Rummy Squares, and Yacht, all are my favorites. Installation is simple and the Face Creator is so cool. No regrets here.

Remarkable

Amazing how technology has allowed us to play games, we once played in our childhood with our family and friends on the computer. Putting these games on cd was ingenious. Why? With boardgames, you tend to lose pieces, board gets damage, 'wear and tare'. But on the computer, futhermore on a cd, it can last, twice as long as in your childhood. The characters are hilarious and give you a certain edge, to want to beat them. I especially like Elayne. I would recommend this particular game to anyone. Never regretted buying it. It challenges me to do better and better each time i play!!! Even if you don't know, or can't remember how to play, there is a manual, teaching you, step by step the rules and the way to play. Again, i would highly recommend it, for anyone who is considering purchasing games for their self and their kids, even friends.

Overall I've been very amused by this game. Games included were chess, checkers, chinese checkers, pachsi, dominoes, backgammon, mancala, snakes & ladders, zen bones, reversi, line 'em up, plane racer, and battling ships (AKA battleship with awesome screen effects). Some characters were annoying but I liked the T-Rex a lot. The ability levels were pretty good. Great screen effects and nice background music.

Better games in this version than in the 2005 version, especially the MahJongg layouts. It's hard to find the 2003 version, but well worth it if you can.

NEW VERSION VS OLD VERSION

I LIKE PLAYING THESE GAMES, THEIR ARE SO MANY TO CHOOSE, THEY ARE FUN, YOU CAN EITHER PLAY BY YOURSELF, OR WITH SOMEONE ELSE, AND THE FACE MAKER IS A BLAST. I CAN ALMOST DUPLICATE A REAL PERSON. ALTHOUGH THEY NEED TO HAVE MORE STYLES FOR HAIR, AND CLOTHES. THE ORIGINAL CHARACTERS FROM THE OLDER VERSIONS OF THE GAMES I WOULD LIKE TO SEE ADDED IN THE NEW VERSIONS, ESPECIALLY JASPER, NITRO & TERRA, ROBIN, AND GAX, THEY WERE THE MOST WITTY, AND SMART MOUTH, FUN TO PLAY AGAINST. WHY DID THEY ELIMINATE THESE CHARACTERS. I THINK THEY SHOULD ADD THOSE CHARACTERS TO ALL THE UPDATED VERSIONS OF THEIR GAMES, WITH WITTY, SMART THINGS. I WOULD DEFINATELY RECCOMEND IT AND BUY IT. THEY SHOULD ALSO MAKE A WAY TO DOWNLOAD UPGRADES ON ALL THEIR GAMES.

Disappointing

The majority of these games no one has ever heard of. The info
available at purchase time does not list what the games are.
Very disapointed!

Mac users take note!

As a Mac user, I was very disappointed to find out that these games are not native under MacOS X. It'll be two years in March that OSX was released, and the folks doing Mac development for Hoyle are way behind the curve. It's not going to be sufficient to keep cranking out slightly different Hoyle games each year so long as OSX support is missing.

All that aside, the net play is misleading, to say the least. The games in the package do not allow for net play. Rather, it launches a website that has a selection of games, some very different from those in this set. Furthermore, small print on the back of the box again adds disappointment for Mac users - the web site does not allow Mac users to play.

Great Fun! Before you know it, an hour is gone!

This is a great bunch of games! The game, Gravity Tiles, is a great game. By far my favorite! You will sit down to play one game, and find yourself hooked, and almost late for work if you aren't careful! I love the Face Maker. I made a face that was pretty close to my own! Bump Em is a fun game as well, and resembles Pachisi (which is also available to play). Well worth the price!

Good For the Money

The Hoyle Board Games 2003 is good for the money. Like to play computer games with a challenge, this is the one for you. It would also be good if you can have an archive of games. The older versions are still good to play too!
