Good graphics and interactive play, terrible computer logic

The graphics, layout, user friendliness of setting up a board is great, but 1 on 1 with the computer is not very challenging at all. The computer makes very dumb mistakes even on Agressive mode and I find myself trapping or sacrificing my own players just to make it challenging.

The interactive version is fun (you can play with people on zone.msn.com) and more challenging (obviously depending on your opponent). Not many people play at the MSN game zone, though and the chat capability is quite poor.

I loved this game in Windows 98 but now that I have XP it doesn't work. I have looked everywhere and have found nothing to fix this. I even ran the program compatibility on XP and it didn't help. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

when i originally bought this game for my windows 98 it worked great! but, now that i upgraded to windows xp the game won't play anymore. i go to hasbro.com and they tell you that you have to go to infogrames, but, when i try to get a hold of infogrames i get a dead end! so if you have windows xp for your computer don't waste your money on any hasbro(or is that has-been) games. the games don't work and hasbro is no help.

Disappointed-the board game is better

This computer version claims to be just like the board game. It is not. I dont mind the non-board game add-ons and campaign scenarios, but the ORIGINAL game should be preserved somewhere as an option. The nomenclature is all wrong! The Marshal's rank is 1, not 10. The General's rank is 2, not 9, ad infinitum. The Scout SHOULD NOT be allowed to move and strike in the same turn. The winning piece SHOULD occupy the space vacated by the loosing piece after battle, regardless if it was the attacker or defender. These are the RULES! Over the years people make up optional rules to popular games. I'm sure you've played Monopoly at one time or another and agreed to place tax money in the middle of the board, and whomever lands on FREE PARKING wins the money. Again, thats O.K. if you want to, but it doesn't fly in tournament play. The toy soldier appearance of the pieces is hard to get used to as well. I know the object is always to advance the graphics as much as possible to make it more interesting, but the angle of view and similarities between pieces makes it difficult to tell the difference. Finally the game AI could possess increasing levels of difficulty. I've played this game for years and the computer is hardly a challange. For a purist like me this game leaves you wanting.

I used to love playing Stratego in my family room with my brother. Now that it came out on CD, it makes it a lot easier to play and to enjoy. I strongly recommend this game.

THE CLASSIC BOARD GAME COMES ALIVE

Hasbro's PC version of Stratego is a winner. The graphics are neat, the rules simple to learn but hard to master, and the game itself is endlessly fun. In addition to the classic game rules, there are several variant games, each of which has its own flavor. Ultimate Lightning, for instance, offers a faster and perhaps more thrilling game, while Alliance Campaign allows multiple players to team up and destory each other on an epic scale. The animated battles are a cool touch as well, replete with flashing swords, booming guns and exploding bombs. The duel to the death when two Marshal's meet is particularly fun. Stratego is a near-perfect PC game, and terrific entertainment for any would-be warlord.

Stratego-not widely known but very fun.

Very fun game. Although it is true computer logic sucks, that doesnt take away from the fun you can experience on the zone with other people. There are 5 different game variations, Classic, Ultimate Lightning, Ultimate Campaign, Alliance Campaign and Alliance Lightning, each with its own, special attribute. ...sometimes, there isn't anyone on, however when there are many people you can learn to love the game. There is even an interactive club, ...that enhances the game replayability. I strongly suggest to anyone with a knack for competition and fun to buy this game. Well worth the chump change, especially with the fine graphics and user friendliness.

I am addicted!

Anyone familiar with the old "Stratego" board game will be familiar with this one, as it's the exact same game. I enjoy playing the computer, although I almost always win. Still, it's a challenge, and a fun one, to track down the enemy's flag. I wish they had a difficuly setting, as I could really use a tougher opponent, but I still say it's a fun game and well-worth playing if you've got an hour to kill.

This is a classic game of capture-the-flag. The computer offers almost no challenge if you surround your Flagboy with land mines. The computer seems to play on a novice level most of the time. Sometimes the computer will get lucky and send in a General or a Colonel to capture your flag. This game was easier for me to learn than chess because almost all of the pieces have the same movements. The Scouts are the only pieces that can move more than one space on the board. This game should improve your memory because you can't identify your opponent's pieces until he attacks one of your pieces. Then, you have to remember which of his pieces he attacked you with. The two most powerful pieces on the board are the Marshal and the General. The Spy is the only piece that can capture the Marshal. The real challenge of this game is locating your opponent's flag without getting blown apart by a land mine or captured by a more powerful piece. A typical game will last about an hour. The animated attacks are fun to watch, and the computer provides enough of a challenge to keep most games interesting. Unfortunately, Stratego does not work with Windows XP. I think the biggest problem with this game is that it includes the use of land mines. The computer does a terrible job of avoiding your land mines. You will probably win every game you play against the computer, but the educational experience is better than what you get from most games. This is a great game for anyone who is thirteen or older. I'm in my thirties, and I still enjoy playing this game.

I love the board game and this PC version is just...alright. Nothing spectacular or too great, and the graphics/sound are way outdated. Buy if you like the board game or for your kids. Slightly recommended.
