the worst game i've ever played

i bought the Revenge of Shinobi blindly because i was too enthused about the idea of playing a classic Shinobi game on my GBA to stop and think that it might [be bad]. reading the instructions booklet that came with the game kept my sense of hope alive, and after throwing the cartridge in my GBA (and, of course, turning it on) my enthusiam was still strong. the game looks alright, and appears to have a big map so you won't breeze through it in an hour.

that, however, is all the praise i can give it.

the controls of this game are probably the worst i've ever encountered. i got stuck at one point because i couldn't get down the stairs. i got up the stairs fine to go into an upstairs area fine, but i had no idea how to get down. i spent twenty minutes trying to get down the stairs before i gave up in frustration. pressing down didn't work, going to the stairs and pressing down and in the direction of the stairs didn't work. i tried many, many combinations of buttons to get down the stairs and found out that none of them worked.

i considered stopping my adventures in Revenge of Shinobi after the aforementioned stairs incident. i turned the GBA off, but then decided not to let the game beat me. i finally figured out how to get down the stairs, but it just got worse. the password system instead of a battery save is horrible, and doesn't seem to work half the time (ie: sometimes the password i received to get back to a particular level worked, sometimes it told me the password was invalid). the levels are tedious--you just walk through them and slash, slash, slash away with your katana.

in the end, the game won the battle and i stopped playing after beating the first two bosses. i felt cheated and angry that such a classic could be turned into such a horrible abomination.

unless you have a severe masochist streak, i would stay far, far away from this game. it will reduce you into a frustrated, crying lump on the floor and remove any good memories you may have had about the Shinobi series. i think that this is the worst game i have ever played.

Those expecting the classic game will be disappointed

Those old enough to remember will know that the original Revenge of Shinobi was one of the best games on the 16-bit Sega Genesis due to the reflex testing levels, hard and unexpected boss patterns (not to mention Spider-Man as a boss!), and the massive attack waves of enemy ninjas. Subtract all that and you have this watered down version of Revenge of Shinobi for the GBA, and those expecting anything near the fun of the original are going to be greatly disappointed. You move from the left to the right in every level taking out enemies, avoiding a few platform hazards, and flipping an occasional switch to open a door. Thats it. That is all you do throughout the entire game, and it gets boring rather quickly. The graphics aren't as colorful as one might have hoped, but Shinobi himself is nicely animated, as are the enemy ninjas and backgrounds. The sound is superb, reminiscent of old samurai films of yesteryear and it captures the setting of the game perfectly. Control is pretty simple, but other than all that there is nothing special at all. It's just a shame that such a great old game like Revenge of Shinobi has become this watered down side scroller, those who were looking forward to this game will be very disappointed and are much better off playing Revenge of Shinobi on they're dusty old Genesis.

worst game ever!

Traditional Gamer - See " Golden Sun" for more information. This was a hell of a lot better than "Altered Beast". The game controls were some waht difficult, but I got thru it OK. If I had to rate this game it would have been 2 and one half stars.

I got this game for Christmas, so don't blame me for wasting money. The graphics or basic and bland, animation is limited and sloppy, and controls are very awkward. The music is limited to a soundtrack of less than 10 songs, none of which are impressive in the least. The story is horrendous as well; it seems like a bad dub of a kung-fu movie. This game brought no fun, only frustration.

GREAT DISAPPOINTMENT

As the other gamers expressed in thier reviews, this game is a big disappointment. Like Loekitty did, I had purchased the game because I was "enthused about the idea of playing a classic Shinobi game on my GBA".
It was in deed diffucult to figure out how to come down the stairs, but it didn't take me long to figure it out. I was expecting the game to be like the genesis version, but of course it was nothing like it. I was able to get pass the fact of the poor graphics and animation.
It was the repitition of similar levels and difficult game controls that upset me to wher I didn't want to play it anymore. Every level has very similar backgrounds. I went through about 7 levels and it was always mountains in the background with the same houses, or all rock behind I was underground.
It took me forever to learn how to do the double jump. I have to be exactly at the peak of a jump before hitting the jump button again - you can't be the slightest higher or lower. It took me over an hour before I could get in sync with it. And even then it messed up sometimes.
As for the codes who ever thought up the design is a sure enough idiot!! You have to change like 12 different character blocks for entering the code. Why did they have to make it so difficult? It would take me a least a minute or two to flip through each character block to enter the complete combination code.
Bottom line don't get the game unless you like monotonous, difficult games!!

Horrible.... save you 5 dollars

This game should be laid to rest. It is boring and is nothing like the classic Shinobis, it like not even looks 8 bit...... looks like 4 bit. Don't be fooled by the cool atwork on the cover........ like me :(
