A interesting idea, but not enough to do

This game was supposed to be a cross between Harvest Moon, and the Sims. So I went and picked it up because I love Harvest Moon, and I somewhat enjoyed the Sims. And the reviews were right... it's a cross between the two and has pretty unique game play.
And zero replay value...
It was really fun at first. I worked hard at paying off my house so I could expand it and arrange my furniture more, and dug up fossils to try and complete the collection in the museum... I cursed at Tom Nook for not selling me a fishing rod when I wanted one and rejoiced when he finally got one in and spent the day fishing...
When I realized I had done everything possible in my home town (shook all the trees, dug up all the fossils, bought out tom nook, got my mail...) I went and bought a cheap memory card and made a second town so I could go there. I also set the clock on the second town in reverse, so that when it was night time in my home town, i could still go to the second town and sell things. Unfortunately, the travelling process is an incredibly cumbersome process of swapping memory cards and praying you didn't put the wrong one in, because it might delete your characters inventory... (why couldn't they just LEAVE the information on BOTH memory cards, rather than moving the whole thing?)
And two weeks later? I realize that this is all this game has...
I *loved* harvest moon. This game is very similar to Harvest Moon. Except, In harvest moon I can play as much as I want any day I want. Time passes as I play. In Animal Crossing, I can play for 30 minutes... and then I'm out of things to do. And since my real life schedule is a bit askew, by the time I CAN play the game, the stores are usually all closed and all my residents asleep.
You really cannot *play* this game.. it plays you... and if you can't play it when and where it wants you to, you get cockroaches in your house and your mailbox overfilled and your residents moving away, and that's really not much fun...
It might be fun... if there was a point to the game besides getting "stuff". Really, there is no other point... go to Tom Nook, buy stuff. Sell stuff to Tom Nook to get money to buy more stuff. Try desperately to get stuff from the same set for bonus points. Pray that the tree you shake will drop money to buy stuff, or perhaps a rare piece of stuff itself. And the stuff doesn't even *do* anything. The nintendo games that you can collect are awesome, but they're very hard to find. I enjoyed collecting the various catalogues, but that was tedious as well. Wait around anxiously every saturday night for KK slider to show up so you can get yet another song... I did enjoy digging up fossils because I like completing collections of things... but waiting for the letters to come back to see what I had was boring and not at all fun, and when I complete the collections... what then?
Overall, the game was fun for a couple weeks, but I really wish I had simply rented it somewhere rather than wasting all this money on a game I'll probably never really play again.

My children received this game for Christmas, 2002. A year later, they are still playing it whenever they have free time - how many games are like that? They absolutely love it, even after a problem with one of our GameCube memory cards that caused them to lose everything and have to start all over again. We have all types of GameCube games including arcade games, puzzle games and adventure games but there is really nothing like this one. I highly recommend this game.

YOU MUST BUY THIS GAME!

This game could be fun for older kids, but it rated E for everyone and there is no way my 6 year old son can play this came. I requires constant reading. You can't even start the game without having a reading/typing interaction for 10 minutes with another character. This game could be fun, but for much older kids. No violence, no obsenity, but no way to play if you aren't an avid reader.

ANIMAL WHAT??

i bought this game (or got) this game as a christmas present. i still play it though. the first 2 months of animal crossing are the best! in my 3rd month, it was getting boring since i caught lots of fish and had all ready payed off my house. what the game really needs is a design your house option. kinda like the sims for gamecube.

by the way: animal crossing 2 is coming out sometime this fall. don't miss it!

Great, but...

I started playing this game when all my friends got it. I was so happy I got this game. I named my town Wolf Den because I was obsested with wolves. You get to collect shells, catch fish, find fossils and send them to a meuseam witch tells you what the bone is, interact with animal neighbors, visit local meuseam, buy things at Nook's (a raccoon) store, get fruit from trees, sell stuff at the local store, make new patterns at the tailor's store, find lost things at the police department, decorate your house with endless wallpaper, furiture, and carpets. The game start off with you on a train going to your town. There you name yourself and your town. Once you get there you meet the friendly raccoon named Nook. He owns the local store. You pick your house out of four houses. You then have to work for Nook for a little bit. Then you are on your own. You have to pay your debt by selling things you catch and find. Also if you talk to some of your neighbors sometimes they will randomly play a game with you so you can win an item or they give you the item. I was surprised how the animals also interact with each other. You walk into the place and you see two animals talking to each other. Sometimes the animals get very mad, sad, or happy from talking to another person. Every Saturday at eight a white dog named K.K. sings for you and you can put the song into your stereo at home. Every Sunday before 12 you can test your chance at the stalk market and buy turnups. There are also many events that happen. Including Cristmas, Thanks Giving, Fishing Tourdements, Holloween, and many more. I hope I helped. This game is awsome.

P.S. The only thing that I do not like about this game is that you have to save everytime before you change the time.

My kids love it, so do I

I agree with the other positive reviews that this game is fun, addictive, educational, entertaining, and funny. My 2 kids ages 10 and 12 play every day, but this is the one game I really do not mind them playing, because its constantly changing, its educational, and although they each have their own character, its not really a competitive game in the classic sense and I find more often than not that they help each other as they learn new nuances tricks and tips. I too have a character, and although I do not play too much, when I do its fun, especially the fishing !!

Anyway, great game.
