One of the Finest First Person Shooters Available!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 1 / 1

Reviewed for Big Boss Games by: L.E.G.

As a lover and avid player of FPS (First Person Shooter) type games, I am probably one of the toughest critics and a game must satisfy all my criteria for me to give it a 5/5 rating. Without any doubts, Call of Duty Finest Hour has successfully accomplished this lofty goal.

To start with, Call of Duty Finest Hour is entirely based on events that happened during World War II. But, ActiVision took on a bigger role than just making a video game and actually tries and succeeds in teaching us a brief history lesson. Granted it's very short and concise, but it helps to setup the game and it's many diverse and challenging levels.

You start out playing as a member of the Russian Army fighting with your comrades on the Eastern Front, from the Volga to Stalingrad. The missions can be somewhat difficult to finish, but the squad leader does give you instructions (just as if you were in the army) on what you need to do or where you need to go. "Blow up that building" and "Take out those machine guns" are typical fare. And most of the time you are a member of a "squad", so don't try to be all "Rambo" and try to defeat the Germans all by yourself. You will get slaughtered!

After you complete your mission(s) as one person, you are then placed in someone else's shoes and get to fight the war from their perspective. Which also opens you up to using different weapons and driving around in tanks. But, this is not Grand Theft Auto. You can't go around and jump in vehicles and take off. Your tour of duty on the Eastern Front with the Russians takes a total of 8 sometimes-grueling missions. At least the game is very forgiving and lets you restart the mission at the last checkpoint.

After the Eastern Front, you are whisked off to North Africa to serve with the British Army in Tunisia. All of the buildings and backgrounds used in this game are simply amazing. There is a lot of rich and articulate detail to keep your attention. You will serve a total of 4 missions with the bulldogs. More neat weapons used by the Brits and a lot of blowing stuff up in these levels. G-D Save the Queen!

And last, but not least, you go to the Western Front to fight with the American Army. As in previous levels, you get more awesome weapons to shoot and tanks to drive. Some of the toughest battles will be fought with the Americans. A total of 7 missions await your shooting skills.

Call of Duty Finest Hour by ActiVision is available for the Playstation 2, Xbox and Gamecube. It is rated "T" for Teen and contains a ton of blood and a whole lot of violence. Since this game is based on World War II, blood and violence is to be expected. Total missions are 19 and 23 different weapons.

This game is Single Player only, but does offer multiplayer online broadband only and 2-16 players. Online gametypes are: Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag and Search & Destroy.
Overall, this game was as close to perfect as they can get with very few technical glitches. Like one time I was crawling around on the floor and trying to climb a flight of stairs and my character just fell through some empty space to his terrible death.

This game was just so well balanced between missions, story, music and action that I had to give it a 5/5.

It's really an awesome game, so go ahead and get a copy.

look, if your looking for a good multiplayer combat game do not think about this. it has no point, even the cover makes me wanna keel over and die. if you want a good game go buy madden 1995. the grafics are better there then here.

Though it's short, Call of Duty's realistic in-the-war feel and sheer challenge will appeal to WWII fans and veterans.

So, what is Call of Duty?
Call of Duty is a game based on World War 2.

What do you do in the game?
The gameplay is very fun. You can use plenty of weapons which are all different, but equal. You can snipe, man turrets, search buildings, crouch, aim, jump. But the presentation ties it together nicely. Sometimes you may get stuck due to lousy instruction, but most of the time, you should be on key.

How hard is this game?
You can play on 3 different difficulties. Easy. Medium. Hard. Even on easy, the game can get somewhat difficult. The challenge is what keeps the player playing this game and it doesn't frustrate you like in other games.

How are the graphics?
Amazing. They aren't that high def, but the graphics create surroundings that make it feel like you are actually in the war. And that is what seperates it from most games.

How is the sound?
Great. It uses Dolby Pro Logic II. Everything on key. Without sound, it wouldn't be a war.

How long is it?
Short, I admit. It is only a couple hours long. But it's difficulty and fun gameplay will leave you coming back for more. Too bad Gamecube didn't give this online play.

Any unlockables?
Some cheats. Movies. Photos. The small stuff.

Who do you reccomend owning the game?
WWII veterans who want to look back at the wars. FPS fans who want a tense experience.
War/weapon fanatics.

Pros: Realistic in-the-war presentation ; enjoyable gameplay ; plenty of weapons to choose from and use ; Challenging game.

Cons: Slow motion moments are annoying ; No multiplayer or online play ; Short single player.

I've thought Call of Duty Finest hour was fun,but it seems to cheat on you.to unlock the cheats in the game you have to beat it,the germans will kill you easily because of your small bar even when you're playing easy mode.your comrades can be easily taken down and it seems the missions in the game are a little too frustrating. On the good side you'll have just the animation reel so sit back and watch the film...Or maybe you should give Medal of Honor:European Assault a chance?

The Germans had the best gear....

If you can get past the mediocre looking first levels in Russia, then you will be rewarded as Call Of Duty actually IMPROVES the graphica as you play. The first few levels as the Russian sniper looked fair at best, but the game eventually brightens up and begins to tax the old Gamecube engine. Sounds are great as is the enemy AI. You gotta love the detail in these games. From German camouflage to the weapons, the designers really did their research. The German Army had 4 or so different camouflage patterns in WW2 (from the elite SS Oakleaf to the Splinter camo of the paratroopers)and you will see all of them in this game. Very detailed. The bodies do disappear about 5 seconds after being shot due to Gamecube memory limitations, but this is corrected in the new Call Of Duty Big Red One as the enemies now stay where they lay. Worth a purchase for 20 bucks!

Call of Duty Finest Hour is a fun but challenging game. My favorite campaign is the Russian campaign because of the sniper levels, and because it isn't near as hard as the American campaign. A frustrating thing about this game is in the rulebook, it says the the Thompson machine gun is a high damage weapon. 3 enemies came out of a sewer once and it took a little over a whole clip to take them out. The Thompson has a 30 round clip. The tank driving in this game I found hard. German anti-tank soldiers constantly shoot your tank and the Russian tank is hard to manuever.
The British campaign is short, but challenging. The first 2 levels are hard because you have to take out 2 tanks with sticky grenades. I found that to be a challenge because the tanks constantly shoot you before you can throw a grenade at them.

Another drawback is your health bar is small and runs out fast. This game is fun but can be very challenging.

This game was the best game. The Nazies are pretty challenging. The level that is one of my favorites is when you are trying to take back the Red Square. THe sounds and graphics are great. The guns are great and my favorite is PPSH or the MG42 I dont know, but they are both great. The best part of the game is when you are Soviet and you are in a tank. I highly recomened this game.

This game is definitely not the best WWII shooter out there.

First, the good. The games in game graphics are pretty well done, although some of the environments are kind of drab. The sound production is also pretty good and does draw your attention when you come to a critical point in the level. Also some of the levels are extremely fun, like the "Ride through the Desert" level.

The bad is a little lopsided compared to the good. First off, the enemy AI(artificial intelligence) is really bad. In one of the tank missions, I zoomed in to one of the fields, and there guys just in there running around in circles. They will also just run at you giving you easy targets. This would make the game easy except it isn't. First off, there's like a million of them, each with what seems like a million grenades. So just when your health bar reaches critical, they'll through a cheap grenade and finish you off. Not very fun. Also, there is a few collision and hit detection problems that prevent you from actually taking those stinkin' Nazis out. IGN also stated this, and I agree: the game practically forces you to play this game Rambo style, and its not very fun. If your allies were actually useful, then this wouldn't so much of a problem. But they aren't, so its you versus a million Germans, each of them hiding behind a machine gun nest.

This game does not carry over from the PC very well, and so many things keep it from being fun. So I can't recommend it. Hopefully Big Red One is a lot better.
