Oh the humanity of it all!

The only topic that needs to be discussed when it comes to "Grooverider" is...cheating. Do you like racing games where you get to know the layout of a track, perfect your driving skills and master the usage of "power-ups"? I'm so sorry then because you'll HATE this game.

This is the type of racing game where you get a time of 1:19 and they get 1:18. You get 1:11 and they get 1:10. You race a scorching 1:06 and they get 1:05. It is called rubberband AI and it's the worst. There's no point in even trying because the computer racers are always right there with you. What kills me is that their reflexes are perfect...computer perfect. They can react to things in one-tenth of a second whereas the poor human player racing against them has those rusty old human reflexes. It's not a fair race and this title is perhaps the least enjoyable game I have ever played (and I've been gaming since Atari 2600 and Intellivision!)

The basic gameplay is as follows: You are controlling a slot car (no surprise there) so you can only accelerate/decelerate and do lane changes in order to avoid track obstacles. There are also power-up boxes spread throughout the track which give you such things as a Boost or Jump ability or weapons such as a Mine or Laser. Get ready for a really sore thumb because the way you go is by pushing forward on the control stick. Whose great idea was that? You play the same handful of tracks over and over again and the problem isn't trying to figure out when to slow down or what lane to be in at a certain time. The problem is not knowing when the computer is finally going to be kind enough to let you win once in a while. They like to give you a false sense of hope too. You'll be in first the entire race and then get shot by a laser from the guy behind you. You spend several seconds crashing and everyone else passes you. Congratulations! You went from first to last right in front of the finish line! Wasn't that fun? It would be one thing if it happened on an occasional basis. I am never one to back away from a challenge, but it does this virtually every single race! The people who made this game seem to enjoy showing disdain for whatever fool actually bought their product. Don't worry Encore...it'll never happen again as far as I'm concerned.

They don't even have the courtesy of giving you an option of restarting the race you are on. You have to exit out, then choose Championship Mode, then choose what racing class you want to play in, then choose what class of car you want, then choose your actual car, then choose what Championship you wish to race in and FINALLY wait for your track to load back up again. After the 100th time of going through all of these hoops you'll probably be ready to grab the disc out of the Gamecube and chuck it across the room like I ended up doing. Please, don't ever buy, rent or even look at this game. Believe me...you're welcome!!
