Metal Arms is a Strong Game

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 14 / 14

I have heard a lot about Metal Arms, and I've had the pleasure of playing a demo for it. It is a really good game, to say the least.
You play as Glitch, a robot designed from scrap metal to infiltrate the evil robot lair. You can hack into the enemy robots to control them. After a while you loose control, but you still get time to make them do your dirty work for you. Also, you can just whip out a gun and run around like Rambo, shooting different parts of the evils robots. The graphics are solid and greatly detailed.
If that gets boring, you can play against your friend in the great multiplayer mode that it has. It resembles Halo alot. There are 4 different, smooth controling vehicles that you can choose from.
All in all, this is a 3rd person shooter no one can miss.
Over and Out.

A mixed bag...

I'm not going to mince words here, "Metal Arms: Glitch in the System" is not for everybody. If you like adventure games that offer puzzle like challenges and riveting storylines, this isn't for you. However, if you enjoy shooters, especially third person shooters, you may want to give this game a second look.

What "Metal..." brings to the table is a game with an original and bit comedic storyline. From the moment the game begins you'll be in combat, in fact, 95% of this game is spent balls to the wall, shooting it out with bad guys. If this is your cup of tea, once again, you will thoroughly enjoy nearly every minute of this game. The control scheme is a bit awkward at first, especially for those not used to it, using the control stick to strafe and move while using the C-stick to aim, very "Halo" like. The array of weapons you can add to your arsenal make the game much more enjoyable, I wont give you a complete listing of them, lets just leave it at they wont dissapoint. You'll also be able to call upon an array of vehicles, and the always fun ability to hijack unfriendly bots to use against your foes. Enemy AI is pretty well done, while lower level enemies show a certain stupidity, more advanced enemies will maintain cover or simply kick you in the rear with a show of force. The graphics are simply put good, not too overdone, but seemingly just right, giving you the exact feel of the game the developers intended.

But, this game isn't without its flaws, and unfortunately they're not easy to overlook. Unlike most games, this one simply gives you a mission objective and lets you figure it out from there. Now, I'm not asking for the game to hold my hand, but wandering around in a dark room with no indication of where to go is a bit frustrating. The only real way to tell if you're going the right way is if you reach a checkpoint, where your best bet is to keep moving forward. The learning curve is a bit difficult as well, while shooting it out isn't hard, learning to aim properly with the C-stick can be, and using a vehicle can sometimes be a rage inducing chore. Another dissapointing factor is the ocassional drop of framerate, this often happens during firefights where allied bots are assiting you, it's the simple problem of too many objects on screen at once. The framerate also tends to drop when stepping through areas such as waterfalls, for those of you who know the workings of framerates, think 25 FPS.

So, you may be asking yourself "3 out 5 stars...why the hell should I bother to even rent much less buy this game?" Simple. This game, in the long run, is fun, and if you like shooters, you'll get your moneys worth. If the developers spent a bit more time on this game working out some of the afformentioned flaws, it would be a 4 star game no question, possibly even a 5.

Approach "Metal..." with an open mind and willingness to learn a bit, and you'll enjoy it, hey, you might even love it.

I got this game for $20 at EBGames because I had heard that it was good, and oh boy was I surprised when I actually played. The game is one of the kind that is not payed attention to because it is not very well advertised. But if you can get your mitts on a copy of this game at EBGames, then buy it because it is only twenty bucks! I mean come on, with kids and money these days, they probably spend that much just going to the mall and hanging out. Twenty dollars is cheap.
You should really get this game, especially if you are a Gamecube-only owner, as I am. That is because there are not that many good games on the gamecube so you might as well get this one. Here is my review:

Gameplay: The one thing about this game that really stands out is the gameplay. You could play this all day and not get bored. While playing the single player campaign, you can find secret golden computer chips (which, when you've saved up a certain amount, will earn you new levels and such in multiplayer.) You are Glitch, a short little robot who joins the robot rebellion. You pick up weapons and purchase upgrades during the levels; there are a range of weapons from the basic mining laser to the gun that you use to control certain robots, which is a blast. On the third level of the game, you can go this arcade system in a room and control a red robot. The others don't know that anything is up, but you will hear some remarks such as "He must be a new recruit." Then when they are least expecting it, you turn on them and blast the other Mil (bad) bots to a smoking heap of nuts, bolts, springs, and washers. Besides controlling other robots, you can also hop into VEHICLES! and drive them around. They are very powerful and you can shoot with them. It is kind of like Halo (which is a good thing). Another cool thing is that you can grap on to ziplines in parts of certain levels, and while you are sliding down you can shoot down at the baddies. I wouldn't really recommend this title to little kids because of the difficulty level. It is really not that hard, but harder than some. I have only tried it on easy mode so I can't speak for Normal or Hard mode. You will definitely have to pay close attention to this game, it is not one of those kind that you can just breeze through. There are a good number of baddies scattered out through the level, and if you don't pick them off one by one but try to rush through, then you will be blasted to bits to start at the last checkpoint. The game is challenging but very rewarding, with upgrades and multiplayer levels that can be earned.

Graphics: The one part about the game that is less than perfect is the graphics. They are still good, but not very detailed at all. I am not complaining though; not every game can be as revolutionary as Halo. There are times when the framerate suffers, namely when you are in the crossfire of a big battle. Although framerate slows down at times, it is pretty reliable throughout the game and there are no major letdowns.

Sound: The sound is really good in this game. From robots getting blasted apart to the cool music in the background, you will want to have the surround sound on with this game.

Display: The display of the menu and the game interface while playing is simple but it gets the job done well. It is easy to read and understand.

Value: The most outstanding thing besides the graphics is the game's value. The single player version is very strong. You will play each level at least three times. It will take a couple of times to get the level's feeling right, but then you will be able to beat it. Also you can go back and get the secret chips, then after beating the level with all the chips you will have a choice of beating the level again, only within a certain time limit for a speed chip. But don't worry, you won't get bored of any of the levels, even after going through it three times. And there are about 35 levels to go through! That is a lot. A lot of the value comes from the multiplayer. It is a four player game, and the multiplayer version is available at the beginning, but you can go through the levels and get secret chips to earn more levels to duke it out. There are different modes of multiplayer, and I will name a couple: King of the Hill (you should know what that means) Moving Hill (King of the Hill, except the hill moves during the level so you have to go chase it) Classic Deathmatch (needs no explanation) Tag (kill the other player so that they are it, after a time of being it, they lose) Robot Deathmatch (take control of robots and kill each other).

Final words: buy this game right now. If you are looking for a new action game, this is your best bet on gamecube.

Awesome Gun-slingin' Action!

I got this game for Christmas, and I'll tell you, it's great.

In Metal Arms, you take control of a little robot named Glitch in a war between the Rebels, an outcast group of robots fighting for their lives, and the Mil 'bots, lead by the evil General Corrosive, who are out to rule the planet. Glitch is found by the rebels and they put him back together to become the most destructive robot around!

The name Metal Arms refers to the fact that Glitch can exchange his right arm for an assortment of weapons, and in your left arm you can carry grenades and other throwable weapons.

The graphics in Metal Arms are spot-on with cool explosions and awesome gun animations. A weapon in the game called to Control tether even lets you hijack robots to do your dirty work for you so you won't take any damage. The story is pretty funny too, and the loud-mouthed mechanic will always give you a good laugh amidst all the action.

Fortunately, the controls are easy to learn and you'll be blowing up robots left and right soon into the game. When you change to a weapon, it pauses the game so you actually have a bit of time to think of the best weapon and the best course of action in the heat of battle.

The only problem some people might have is that the game is pretty hard, so you might have to play through a level a couple of times to beat it. But when you do beat a hard level, it feels very rewarding.

Metal Arms is a great game easily worth the money, and it has something in it for all action gaming fans!

Tons of shot'em up fun. I'm not a gamer, my ten year old son is. But we both have a lot of fun battling each other in multi-player games. Nothing like a little quality time where parent and child try to destroy one another. I dabbled in the single player game but was a little disappointed with the amount of foul language. If they left the cursing out this would have rated 5 stars. If you stick to multi-player games there is no cursing. Great graffics, wonderful weapons, excellent explosions.
