Game was great, but Combat Upgrade wrecked it

1 Rating: 1, Useful: 19 / 22
Date: April 30, 2005
Author: Amazon User

This game used to be awesome, but it has drastically changed since April 28th. SOE released the so called Combat Upgrade and unlike the names suggests, they changed not only the combat, but everything in the game.

I made an overview of what i like and do not like about the Combat Upgrade. Hopefully this will give potential buyers an idea about the game.

Pros:
- Better balance of defenses in profs.
- New weapons.
- Programming moves in combat (only one move that is repeated, nice touch, but prefer combat queue)

Sorry but that's all i like.

Cons:

- Armor is still the same. Yeah they are tied to profs now but that is pretty lame. They should've just added some customization options in the crafting process to make it more unique, in terms of effectivenes, resist types and in design. Pre-CU the resists were a percentage that was prevented from every hit that was dealt to you. Now it's a number and i have no clue what they mean. Why make this more complicated? Also, the resists were drastically lowered, but why introduce armor mitigation? That takes us back to square 1.

- Buffs have been nerfed too badly. Docs and entertainers no longer like to play the game anymore, because they have become useless.

- Chef foods have been nerfed too. Many foods were really great pre-CU but are only so-so now and i don't see a reason to use them really or for chefs to make them. They paid top credit to obtain all the resources needed to craft them and it was all for nothing.

- Combat is boring. The cooldown timers are unrealistic and take away the pace of the fights. Also due to hindrance i can barely even move making me a sitting duck. Really, if Stormtroopers and Jango Fett can run in the movies in full armor, why can't i? Moves are also way too generic and you can use them with any weapon, taking away the diversity in weapons/profs.

- Crafters are a huge part of the game and they have been nerfed heavily. Schems have been changed so different resources are needed and in larger quantities. On top of that many items have also been nerfed so badly there's no more sense in making them.

- Graphics were great and are now far from Star Wars-like. All the effects are cartoony, much too fantasy/magic orientated and unrealistic. The first time i saw this on the testcenter i thought i was seeing things because i was tired, but alas it was really there. HAM windows are also looking very amateuristically and oversized and people have too much stuff above their heads. I do not have to see everyone's HAM. If i want to i'll just select them. Font is lousy too and much harder to read. It's too small and looks "flat".

- Groups are too small. It is not fun to have a guild hunt and only allow 6 people to come with you. Sure you can make 2 groups but it is way too hard to communicate that way and takes away a lot of fun and precious time. Not fun either if you wanna go up in a ship and be restricted to 6 people. That won't fill your Sorosuub. 20 People groups were fine.

- HAM was changed so it is now one health and 2 ability pools. On top of that you no longer have the ability to change the stats, thus making it very hard to do your prof. Some might require more action or mind to function and you could change that. No longer an option unfortunately. On top of that combat is a lot more boring now, since there's only one bar you can hit. Yeah there was the mindpool that was a bit weakish, but that's what chefs make Aitha or Blue milk for, to heal your mind.

- JTL has changed too. Graphics at least. All allied ships now have a recticle around them, which just fills up the screen without it being needed. Why would i care about seeing them when they are lightyears away? Also, you now see an extra box around everything you select and it moves along with the direction error. A bit too much in my humble opinion. Really disappointed by this, since the last time someone asked, it was mentioned JTL would not be changed in any way.

- Medical XP for doctors and medics are only granted in the field. This is a bad move and makes the grind a very long and annoying journey. It's also very silly not to grant XP in med centers and camps. If you want them to heal instead of just buffing most of the time give them a bonus or some nice treat to motivate them, but don't punish them like they have been now with the CU.

- Mission rewards do not need to be lowered. This is after all a game and not the real world. It should be realistic but you don't have to overdo it.

- Profession requirements were changed a bit and it looked good at first, but it ended up making no sense at all. Why do commando's need unarmed if they have no attacks for it? Why do Swordsman need 1-handed techniques when they are 2-handed etc. Just makes no sense at all.

- Sounds are no longer Star Wars anymore. Weapons sound different now. The combat music is ok, but i preferred the old one. Maybe an idea is to have it adjustable, so you can pick your own music, would be a nice touch. The CU music is also very choppy and ends abruptly.

- Targets are too strong. Even a single Beldonna owns me and my Probot. According to SOE combat droids would be even better in the CU, well that's a definate no-no. Mine has the max combat rating and he died in less than 30 seconds. This is mainly due to the fact they have changed SWG from a skill based into a level based game. I absolutely hate level based games as they take away my freedom and make it very boring for me. I like to have a challenge. Pre-CU i often was unbuffed and when i encountered an enemy that was flagged as a "tough fight" i often checked out it's resists to see if i could take it. Sometimes i lost but a lot of times i won. Now with this new system you will never be able to win from targets that are the same or above your level.

- Weapons have converted to a new system and i wonder why? It makes no sense, stats are also way too complicated, nothing wrong with the old system, much easier to read too. On top of that weapon certifications are no longer listed in the skills window nor are they listed in the individual skillboxes that used to grant them, making it very confusing for everyone to find out which weapon you can use. They also changed certs for many weapons, thus a lot of things you may have bought are completely useless now. I got novice pistoleer so i could use a republic blaster and the sweet special that box granted. Now the rep blaster requires Master Pistoleer to be used. On top of that, the modified, which IIRC needed Marksman - Pistols 2 to be used, is now also a Master Pistoleer gun. My BH is now 2-4-4-4 and has loads of Scatter Pistols, all useless now until i get Master BH. Bad move by SOE. They should've just kept everything the way it was and add the new guns to higher skills.

- XP gain has been nerfed. This is related to the level based system the game has now and i don't like it at all. Hope the game is reverted back to pre-CU. Game was much better then.

A great game ruined

I've been playing since launch, but up until about a month ago, I was taking a four or five month break from the game. I played WoW a little bit, but when I got back to SWG, I realized how much I really loved the game. Then the Combat Upgrade hit.

The game is now pretty much unplayable, as far as I'm concerned. People complained about the game being "too easy" and about how everything in the game can be killed solo. Well, fine. Then balance it. But SOE overcompensated and made EVERYTHING much tougher than it should be. It was underbalanced before, and it's severely overbalanced now.

SOE Customer Support is HORRIBLE. They don't listen to you, they don't care if you have problems or make mistakes. Don't expect any help at all if something happens to you. SOE is truly one of the worst companies I've ever dealt with. The customer is always wrong as far as they're concerned.

Play WoW or Guild Wars or something like that. But pass on this one, my friends.

Star Wars Galaxies Destroyed by Combat Downgrade

Sony completely destroyed the game by NOT fixing pre-existing problems and RADICALLY redesigning the game. Now the problems are two fold, the old lag and hard ware problems still exist and servers are crashing, losing data and everything we liked about the game is now completely GONE. XP is twice as hard to get, Jedi and Teras Kasi Masters are completely NURFED and guilds can't even hunt in groups larger than 8. It's heartbreaking to someone like me who has played since day one and was looking forward to playing another two years.

PLEASE DONT WASTE MONEY OR TIME IT SUCKS NOW

Best STAr WARS game killed......

SWG was allways something like a BETA for that you had to pay, but it was constantly evolving and - IT WAS UNIQUE!!!
(It was never bug-free, but because of it's uniquness and the fact that it was STAR WARS and gave you the feeling of living in the world of this epic saga it was "acceptble".)
But THIS bonus is gone with the CU, now it is only a clone of some other MMORG'S!
It even has lost much of the STAR WARS feeling and of living in a real world - the animation of the chars and the fighting animations are horrible, compared with pre-CU - and the ability to chat with other group-members while fighting is gone now.
They also have reduced the big groups of 20 players to only 8 players now and the best gag is: there are some mobs ingame that are even unkillable for this "full groups".
They have implemented a level-system, that is so horrible that you are not really be able to get a satisfying ammount of XP - you get only 1xp from mobs only 4 levels below yourself.

IF play time is limited, this game is not for you

As a fairly new user to the game, I fell in love with the game immediately.

With the recent upgrade to the combat system, they have taken a fun game and have made it impossible for the casual player to have fun. The ONLY way that you can play this game now is in a large group.

As a parent of 2 small children, I do not have hours and hours of time to play any game.

If you have the ability to play 30 - 50 hours a week, you might like this game. But for the casual player, forget it.

In 2 hours of play time, it took me over an hour to get a group together, another 15-20 minutes to decide/get to where to fight/grind. Played for 45 minutes, fight was bugged, creatures doing melee damage from 150m away...

The new Combat upgrade did add nice graphics and I like the layout. My main issue with the upgrade is that they have nerfed too many professions and soloing. They moved the game from one extreme to the other. Hopefully over time they fix this, but for now, I would not waste my money on this game until they fix MANY items.

Not worth it

Despite what the few people trying to spin the recent update as a good thing for the majority of the people that have been playing SWG, the CU was the breaking of the game for them as well as myself. After reading the forums on the SWG website I have come to some conclussions 1) it seems the majority of players don't like the CU. They have canceled their accounts and stopped playing. I have read many posts that say the major sites in SWG (Places that always have people there) are all but dead, turned into ghost towns from the exudos of players from the game.
SOE has said that they are doing this to hopefully bring in new players, with that in mind i hope that they completely rewrote the manual that come with the game because just about none of it applies to the Post CU SWG. If you are inclined to buy this game throw out the manual because it won't help you at all getting started.
I personally was looking forward to the CU but, it was so poorly planned, tested, and implemented that it destroyed what little faith I had left in the developers of the game. It was a hard choice to cancel after playing since the day after the game launched I still miss the many friends I made but it was no longer the game that I had been playing. Instead it's just a cheap rip off of EQ2 with way too many bugs to be anywhere near a live server, in my opinion it shouldn't even be out of alpha testing let alone beta or live.

Star Wars Galaxies Downturn after Redux

SWG was an awesome game, unique among MMORPG's. But recent mis-management by the development team has caused a series of problems, not the least of which is a mass exodus of the established player base. Pleas from the players have gone un answered. It looks grim for this once wonderfully unique gem of a game. I would be surprised if it is viable long-term, and if is it, it looks like it will need to be scaled back significantly, as most servers are relatively empty now. Sad. Not a good place to be now.

What can be said about this game that hasn't already been said? I played SWG and JTL for 6 months before canceling my account. SWG is a boring repetitive game loaded with bugs and time sinks. This game is just no fun to play, who wants to grind for a year on a character and still get nowhere? Who wants to take up a job in a game that is a repetitive as your real life job? Sony designed a game to take advantage of star wars fans. If you're a die hard star wars fan you'll ignore the poor UI, the endless time sinks, the lack of role playing, endless daily downloads and when you have a problem you'll even ignore the poor customer service and in the end you die hard fans will keep paying your $16 monthly subscription to be spoon fed crap and you'll enjoy it because it's starwars and in the end when you break it all down that's all this game has going for it

To those looking for an alternative to this garbage play World of Warcraft, WOW is leaps and bounds beyond this game.
To those who call this the "best online game ever made" Go play World of Warcraft and find out what a real online game is.

No use buying it now, Sony killed the game off with the Combat Upgrade. It was so much better before, but these clowns have taken a great game and just hacked it all apart.
