Great mindless fun

If you're looking for a mindless, fun way to spend a few hours, Rampage is perfect. You take on a monster's personality and bash away at buildings!

We've always loved the rampage series and this latest release builds on the fun. You start out with only a few monster options - looking suspiciously like Godzilla, King Kong and so on - but there are a TON of unlockable monsters of all shapes and sizes. You start out in Las Vegas, meaning that the levels have cool hotel areas looking like a castle, a pirate ship, and so on. I wonder what those could be?

There isn't a plot here. You are simply a monster out to cause as much destruction as you can. You jump up and down on top of buildings, you kick over cars, you smash windows and you eat the fleeing people. There's a lot of humor involved. In one level your task is to eat 10 mimes - and you watch them "walk against the wind"!

The graphics are reasonably good here - when you jump in the water, it ripples and splashes. The background stretches for multiple blocks, so you get a sense that this is a "larger world" that you are destroying. Still, it's true to its arcade roots - really you are just moving left and right.

The sounds follow the same arcadey basics. You get basic bashing noises, a classic soundtrack and silly comments by the people you are eating.

I did find some of the "placement" issues troubling. I would think I was lined up to kick a car, but I'd miss it. I'd see a banana in a window and try to get myself exactly lined up to grab it, but somehow I'd miss. The game used to be about wild bashing and thrashing, but now you have to be right on target in order to hit.

Still, it was only a minor complaint, and in general the vast selection of monsters and locations really makes up for it. Perfect for killing a few hours in a relaxing, mindless way!

Beasties everywhere!

The newest version of Rampage is a welcome addition to the family. We now get to go 3-D with it and cause some serious damage to cities. There are 30 monsters to play if you unlock them all and most of them are pretty damn cool. Each level has it's own side-challenge goal for you to accomplish for power ups. Graphics are pretty darn good and the interaction you can get with grabbing cars and throwing them is a blast. There are signs on buildings that poke a little fun at real-world people, movies, and businesses that is just an added bonus of humor. There's no educational value to this game but it is great fun and gives you a mindless few hours of taking out your anger on the populace of the Rampage world. I recommend this game to waste a few hours of down time but you'll end up playing it longer with each new monster you unlock. One of my favorite parts... the game automatically saves for you unlike many previous versions of this game-family, and of course there's the cheat codes if you can find them.

My 10 Year Old Son is in Heaven!

My 10 year old son gets frustrated with many game cube games - not because they have problems, but because he just isn't that good at them, especially compared to his older sister. This game is a dream come true to him. There're no catchy puzzles or "dying" over and over again if he doesn't figure out the "way" to get around an opponent. And, best of all, he gets to be King Kong and a T-Rex and other assorted monsters. He was also careful to point out to me that though it is based on destruction & mayhem, its rating is E-10 because there's no gore or blood and it is make-believe monsters doing the destruction. When a monster eats someone, it gulps them down whole!

THANK YOU MIDWAY !

THANK YOU MIDWAY !
Some years ago I wrote an email to midway to suggest a new 3D Rampage for 128 BIT consoles after the last 2D "Through Time" (2000) for PSX. On August 2005 Midway announces a new Rampage game for Nintendo Gamecube. The dream coming true. From that moment on I started to believe in miracles!! I started to play my all times favourite game "RAMPAGE" (The unique legendary first arcade 1986) on Commodore 64 version (1987), then "World Tour" and "Universal Tour" for N64; til "Through Time" for PSX. This brand new "RAMPAGE: TOTAL DESTRUCTION" is all that a Rampage fan can desire! You can do everything you want!!! Thanks to 3D environment this new Rampage chapter has a gameplay that leaves me with no words... now the buildings are hard with an incredible realism!! To destroy them you must smash them with classic punches, kicks and (TA-DAHH!!) low punches and back punches from the 1st RAMPAGE!!!!!! In the buildings you can found points, good food, bad food (that will you puke, burp and fart :-) ) and a fantastic NEW... The INSTANT RAMPAGE (!!!) : it's like the health bar, you have some seconds to destroy all with ROAR (press R) and super punch (hold B). You can eat people, kick people, smash people, grab cars, grab buses - eat the people in it - launch the buses in front of buildings !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There are 4 game modes: Campaign, King of the World, King of the City and Timed Run ; 1-4 players (I love to play myself and at Midway/Pipeworks studios there are genies `cause there is the possibility to play in coop mode with CPU!!! Great!!!). There are the classics George, Lizzie and Ralph; more plus 27 brand new monsters !!!!!! Each monster with his personality!!! IMPRESSIVE !!!!! The GC pad rumbles when buildings start to collapse! If you destroy and pick up the points, will be there combo! 7 worldwide locations: Las Vegas, San Francisco, London, Los Angels, Chicago, Hong Kong, New York. You can choose to play in day or night background! There are some bonus missions in each level (for example, eat 10 business men) to obtain the special powers! Between the levels you can choose another monster to continue the destruction!!!
The longevity is infinite, like all Rampage games! YEAH!!! The quality of graphic is absolutely fantastic!!! It seems to be a stop motion movie! The hard rock soundtrack is perfect !!
The CG presentation is spectacular!!

Rampage Total Destruction is totally compatible with Freeloader 1.06b (I'm Italian) and is multilanguage!!! Oh Yes!!

There are many many other things I do not unveil you ;-) In 2006 is rare to see a game like this! I always thinked that the most important thing in a videogames is the FUN and Rampage is the prove that the REAL videogames is still alive! If you love the real videogames you gonna play Rampage. I adore the Rampage filosophy !!! Destroy ALL on the screen! AMAZING!!! The true Rampage fans will love this Total Destruction and the mass people will discover a Game that made the history of videogames!! The fun and simplicity give to Rampage: TD the power of the free destruction!! Hope with all my hearth to see a sequel (and some toys stuff) on Gamecube, Wii and DS. THANK YOU VERY MUCH MIDWAY !!!

I remember playing rampage on the nes with my brother 15 years ago. Several versions have come out since then and NOTHING HAS CHANGED.
The controls are as impricise as it was on the NES. The larger selection of characters are just filler, since they all have the same powers. Oh yeah and "3D neighborhoods?" No that is total BS. You can move left or right, not in or out. How is that 3D? Oh that's right - 3D characters, 3D buildings in a 2D world. In my book being able to move left and right means that this game is 2D.
If you loved the original (it is included), or the 64 version (also included) this may have some value. If you wanted to check up on a familiar franchise to see how they have changed, move on.
