Apparently the others here who've chosen to review this game have it out for this particular title, nor does it seem that they've played it much. No, Serious Sam: Second Encounter IS NOT a modern FPS; it's not going to compare well on a technical level to the Halo's, Half-Life 2's or the Battlefield's of the world, because it's a throwback to a simpler time. The engine is starting to show its age, enemy AI comes at you using the "brute force method" (endless wave after endless wave) and not everyone will like the art style, but if you take it for what it is, a white-knuckle, balls-to-the-wall FPS, where you're rewarded for blasting everything in sight (in a time when being stealthy is all the rage), you'll enjoy this game. To put it in a way some gamers will understand, there are moments in Serious Sam when it feels like I'm playing the classic Robotron from a first-person POV. There are enemies coming from all directions, suicide bombers, raging beasts, long-range machinegunners, etc., and here I am, one little character, having to destroy them all. If Serious Sam had a bird's-eye camera, it would look like Robotron in many instances, and that's a good thing.

If you still get a kick out of classic FPS games like DOOM and Duke Nukem 3D, the Serious Sam takes that style of gameplay to a whole new level.

Beached Whale

Serious Sam: Next Encounter is err, how can I put it? Not the hottest babe on the beach. Nope, Serious Sam is more a beached whale type of chick.

Game play is fast, furious and super repetitive. The fun wore off very quickly. The game does not look very good, and the sound, well I can't remember it really, no catchy or memorable tunes that's for sure. I've seen brand new sealed copies of this game on EBay going for as little as $4 - even for that low price it's not really worth it.

Way below average game

Serious Sam next encounter must rate as one of the worst first person shooters to appear in recent times. Croteam created quite a reputation with the release of serious Sam 1 and 2, although they seem to have lost their way with serious Sam next encounter. Next encounter simply does not match up to the standards set by the other two games. Maybe it is down to the fact that the whole concept is simply too out of date to match up to the standards set by the other first person shooters out there at the present time.

My game cube deserves better than this has to offer.

I liked JasonMs words (more a beached whale type of chick) one to avoid (laughs). Sure it is super repetitive, i am not so sure about it being all that fast though.

The thing that bugged me most with S.S.N.E. was the overall amateurish look. I cannot quite put my finger on it, it simply is not up to the standards of my other game cube games in my collection.

One for the bargain bucket, that is for sure.

I played the original Serious Sam on the PC and when I saw that Sam was coming to the Gamecube I had to buy this game. I have been very pleased and will probably keep this game in my Gamecube collection for as long as I keep the system. This is NOT the greatest game in the world. It is not even the greatest FPS in the world. It is a FUN game for those who love the old Doom and Serious Sam type of FPS ... games that are rediculously violent and are full of stupid jokes that seem like they were taken right out of the Evil Dead movies. If anything I wrote here brings a smile to your face and brings up memories of happier times playing old an old FPS, GET THIS GAME. The super-fast frame rate of the Gamecube makes Serious Sam a MUCH more fun game to play than the original Doom or Serious Sam on the PC.

Best Game Since Timesplitters 2!!!

My friend said this game is going to suck when I told him about it. Well I still bought it because I love shooters and when I first started playing it I thought the same thing that it sucked. Well I stopped playing it after the first level and we gave it a break. We started playing it again about two hours later and ended up on the 17 level playing co-op. Well after about 9 hours playing the game all I can say is wow truly amazing. The graphics in game are great but cutscenes are kinda ugggh. Controls are just like Timesplitters 2 and the frame rate runs at a solid 60 to 40 frps. Never is there any choppiness or slow downs. There are loads of guns, upgrades, enemies, aliens, over 40 levels and a great multiplayer mode which lasts a long time. This is a must buy even though it didn't get the best reviews because of the graphics on cutscenes. Gaming sites need to look beyond graphics and see how great this game is though, a must buy.

Not so great FPS

The game is quite fun for a some while but just gets old. The game's graphics are smooth and great, that's the good part but is just too basic, the ragdoll's (scenes of there defeat, blowing up, flying off, etc.) happens all the time, the zombies blow up and the dinos will fly off in front of you. The story, still can't figure it out. Controls are easy, wouldn't mind if had a sequel on the GameCube. Replay, up to you.

This game is just one of those all time classic shooters your library should not be with out. The graphics are simple and the action is second to none.

If you ever have a bad day or just want to blow stuff up. You must get Serious Sam Next Encounter.
