I didn't pick up the first two Ninja Turtles games on account of bad reviews, but I took a gamble on Mutant Nightmare and I'm glad I did. Those who have been holding out for a decent, button-mashing brawler like the old school arcades will finally have something to cheer about. This isn't a perfect game, but it's close enough that fans can finally be nostalgic again.

Presentation-wise, Mutant Nightmare comes loaded. A cool new CG intro, loads of cutscenes ripped from the tv series, the original VAs, and graphics and levels modelled after the show. The game basically recaps the major season 3 plotlines, including the Triceraton invasion, Bishop's experiments, and Shredder's exodus. Plus there are special bonus levels based on a certain time-traveling mini-arc that fans will appreciate.

Gameplay-wise, Mutant Nightmare also does pretty well. All four turtles will always be onscreen now, and those not controlled by players will be taken over by the CPU. It does make the game somewhat easier, but it's also great to see the Turtles fighting together. The AI does its share of the fighting, so players don't feel like it's still all up to them. Basic combos are responsive, and the game finds a nice balance between the number of enemies and how hard it is to clobber them.

A few nitpicks: More enemy variety could've been included, as well as cooler interactive environments. All 3D brawlers seem to suffer from this, moreso than the old 2D ones. The game also tries to recreate those old psuedo-3D levels where characters are in shooting galleries or on vehicles. Honestly it's a nice idea, but the execution feels laughable and simplistic. On a few missions you'll be forced to escort characters, and either they walk too slow or walk into fights and get themselves killed, making you fail the mission. Finally, certain levels drop you into a room, lock the doors, and only open them once everyone is beaten. It's fun the first few times, but the game makes you repeat the fights every time you enter the room, which quickly grows tiresome.

So there are flaws, but the overall gameplay makes them bearable. The game also includes the Turtles in Time arcade classic, which can be unlocked after clearing about 1/3 of the game. The music has been altered due to rights issues, but otherwise the gameplay is still excellent. Note that the version here is based on the original arcade and not the SNES port, which had some noticible changes.

Overall I found Mutant Nightmare to be a fun, diverting experience. Considering how cheap the game is, I think it's a must-buy for all TMNT fans, and a strong consideration for those who like button-mashing brawlers.

i only have this game but it's really really cool like how you can throw practically ANYTHING at bad guys or eachother!!!!! like you can pick up barrels filled with gasoline and BOOM!!!!!!!!!!!!! it blows bad guys up! or you can wreck a car covered in bad guys like say you were being chased after by tricatons well lead them over to a car and slice it all up and BOOM!!!! no more triceratons but they just keep coming through the wrecks!!

I bought this game and now have all three Ninja Turtles games for my gamecube. The first were good, the second one being extremely good, but the third is a great game and unlike the 1st and 2nd games, Mutant Nightmare has a variety of stages from the traditional scroller to rail levels and even target shooting!!! I've played this game with my little sister and she loves it!! Now, when I bought this I have to confess that my expectations for it was very high and have been let down a bit.

What I don't like about this game is that all four turtles are with you througout the whole game and it's not like one or two turtles according to how many people are playing, but all four are there regardless. It can be irritating if you're trying to go off someplace and waiting for the other turtles to follow you; what I don't mind though, is that, unlike part 2, each turtle has their own health. That part is good, since you don't have to worry about dying and get a game over just for one turtle dying. lol. Also, a con is that the missions tend to be shorter than all three present games; just as soon as you get into the levels, it's over before you know it. While this can be a blessing (cause some levels you're lost like crazy) this can also be a disappointment because it keeps the excitement of the game to a very rare minimal to where you really don't get charged to play and even bordem. But, nevertheless, when you consider how many missons you have to go through, it's no wonder things are the way they are (and believe me, it's a long game even for the levels being a bit short). But the best thing about this is that you get to unlock Turtles in Time, the arcade version of the game, but like the last game the arcade version copies the 3rd NT game, so forget about what you heard in the arcade. It's still a good addition and is fun to unlock.

So, in my final words, while this 3rd Ninja Turtle installment isn't as great as the last one, it's mult-variety levels are enough to keep your interest level up while still feeling like a traditional beat'em up NT game. The music is great and the controls are very simple with challenging enemies and plenty of goodies to unlock. In this game you level up your turtles by buying moves, scrolls, and other stuff that help you build up your favorite turtle to the max to kick some major mutant butt!!! While the game isn't all extremely better, it is different and that's what makes it great. If you are Ninja Turtle fan and just want the game as part of your collection, go for it. But even if you're not, this is a game good to play with your buddies (or in my case, siblings (2 of them)) to team up with and challenge yourselfs to put an end to the mutant nightmares that threaten New York as well as the turtles themselves. It's even greater when you unlock Turtles in Time which takes you back to memory lane for the older NT fans (like myself) or introduce a great classic to new ninja turtle fans. I give TMNT 3:Mutant Nightmare, a 4 out of 5 stars!! TURTLES RULE!!!!!!

cool game kind of long...

It took at LEAST 3 hours to beat this one but WOW time flies by super fast with this one!!! unless you play with people that are new to it then it takes awhile especially on the escorting levels i don't like those much because I'VE SEEN APRIL FIGHT PEOPLE BEFORE SHE IS NOT REDICULOUS LIKE THIS GAME SHOWS!!!but anyway it's still fun definately the last level "the battle with shredder"!!!although they just named it mission 16 that's just what i like to call it except they didn't do it exactly like on T.V. and they changed zanramon in "space invaders" too but he's cool in this one he's a gigantic robot here!!! oh yeah!!!! and bishop!!..ok i'm spoiling it but i would suggest renting before buying cause it's mostly a "hack and slash" game but you can do different things like kicking and punching people, blowing up barrels, cars.stuff like that!!
