good story, painfully boring gameplay

Let me preface my review by saying that I know what a good RPG should be. I grew up on classics like Shining Force, Phantasy Star, and the original Final Fantasy's, as well as newer classics like Morrowind and World of Warcraft. Legend of Heroes II is not a good RPG.

The story follows two kids from a small village as they visit five shrines scattered across their world on a right-of-passage pilgrimage. Along the way they find that they are following in the footsteps of the Moonlight Witch, who 20 years ago made doomsday prophecies that are now coming to pass.

The story is actually pretty good, as are the sound and graphics, but the gameplay is boringgggg. Essentially you talk to a person at city A, who tells you to go to city B; on the path leading to city B you encounter monsters (which you can easily avoid). Finally reaching city B you talk to another person who tells you to go to city C, and so on. There are no quests, there is no need to level your characters (as there are no bosses and you gain new magics only by visiting new shrines), and at any given time there is only one available path.

Like to play an RPG with a large world you can explore? Tough, you'll have to follow the path.
Like to explore side-quests and search for hidden items? Tough, there aren't any.

I'm halfway through the game and can't come up with any compelling reason to finish it. ~80% of the gameplay is spent in tedious dialogues with characters, which would be acceptable if the other 20% was rewarding, but the other 20% is spent traveling to the next set of tedious dialogues. Legend of Heroes II is more like a painfully slow cartoon than a rewarding RPG.

I'll likely sell this game and continue on in my search to find a good RPG for the PSP.

fun, but too short

I received this game last Friday, but I finished this in a week (2-3 hour gameplay/day)
if you played the last one (Legends of Heroes I), the gameplay is the same, but pet system is a little bit different (you can monitor and feed it to get some status help)
the summon monsters are good at first (you may need a lot of mind potions), but they don't grow throughout the game, and become useless on final boss fight
the storyline is OK, but it may be kinda messed up in Castle Roudo
however, the ending is worth to watch, it's long like the last ver, but it's not as good as the last version
if you played the last ver, this one you should play
The Legend of Heroes has 4 volumes, this one is volume 2, and 2 more are coming in the future

decent

the storyline is nice/sad. Pretty straightforward game. cute characters. Two village kids setting out on a coming-of-age journey to make them 'adults' in the eyes of their village. But these 2 kids *were they 14 and 15* just happen to 'manage' to save the entire world. It's got its funny/bizarre parts. buy it used or something for a cheaper price tho, i wowuldn't spend too much on it b/c its not that amazing of a game....

Slow to start, but picks up later

As with any game, Prophecy of the Moonlight Witch has its good and its bad.

Pros:
Decent storyline, even though it takes awhile to really get to.

Even though some of the characters are rather exaggerated, some of them are quite fun.

Cons:
Characters, while they all have their own personalities, aren't always written all that believably.

Boring game play: go to town, get mission. Complete mission, go back to town. Repeat throughout game.

Long ending scene. You'll be ready to move on to your next adventure by the time you've finished watching the end movie.

If you're looking for an outstanding rpg to lose yourself in, keep looking. If you're just in the market for something to tide you over until the next big thing comes along, Prophecy of the Moonlight Witch is worth a shot.

the game in itself is great. the shipping however took forever had to contact the company 3 times but amazon in itself did everything they could to help thank you for that at least

buy it locally, not online

It's a great game, in a great trillogy. I was, however, unable to find it online, as my Amazon order was cancelled due to problems with the retailer... My suggestion is - Definitely buy the game; it's great, especially if you're a fan of either of the other two games in the trillogy - but buy it at a local game retailer like Gamestop, EB Games, Game Crazy, or maybe Circuit City (not Best Buy - they overprice everything, and probably don't stock this game anyways(it's too old)).

Awesome Game!

I thought this game was really cool. The storyline is relaxing, and a little sleepy at first, but eventually becomes pumped up and awesome. What starts off as an inocent journey to come of age, ends up becoming a quest to save the world. This game is definitly worth the time and money!
