Little robots save the day

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 18 / 18

It's a pity that my patience for the PSP ran out before Tokobots came out. Having sold the handheld for its lack of interesting games some months ago, I came across this neat little puzzle platformer from my friend, and before long, I was bribing him with food just to borrow his PSP and the game for an "extended period of time".

Tokobots it's one of the very few games that we see on the PSP that we won't get to find on the PS2, and this makes the game a little more unique than the bunch of port-overs that litter the PSP's game library. But being original is not the only strength of the game. It's the interesting (though under-developed) story, engaging gameplay and variety of challenge in the game that make it one of the most enjoyable titles on the PSP for me for quite a while.

The story goes that Bolt, an archeologist, discovers the ruins of an ancient civilisation that is inhabited by Tokobots. These cute little robots grow attached with Bolt, and there begins a journey that sees Bolt and the Tokobots travel around the world while taking on a group of bad guys through the use of "formations".

The idea of formations is not as rigid as it sounds, even though there're really only three primary ones to start with. "Jointing", for example, gets the Tokobots to join hands together with Bolt. "U formation", for example, gets the Tokobots to line-up in a horizontal line on both sides of Bolt. "V formation" lines the Tokobots behind Bolt. While these may sound simple, many actions can come out from each one of them. What's more, the game also allows the player to perform combos on these formations, which in turn lead to some devastating moves that either help solve environmental puzzles, or simply give the enemies a hard time. Finding the right formation in various situations will therefore be the challenge for the player. Also, the Tokobots will also unlock new formations, and take on new forms as the game progresses, which make the game feel less repetitive.

The presentation of the game is also quite a gem. The graphics, for example, do very well in recreating an "archeological" feel to the game. There's some slowdown in frame rate at some areas, and at times the camera angle makes things really difficult, but these are common issues for PSP games that I gather is more due to the limitation of the handheld than the game itself. The audios also blend in nicely with the overall presentation of the game, although I find it rather monotonous after a while. It could help with some form of voice-over as well.

In conclusion, Tokobots is a refreshing addition to the PSP family that should appeal to fans of the puzzle platformer genre. The strength of its gameplay alone makes an easy-to-recommend title.

YEAH A GREAT ORIGINAL PLATFORMER ON THE PSP!

Well it is about time. We finally have a good original title on the PSP. THis one is in the form of a platformer. For those confused, a platformer is like just about any mario game (super mario, mario 64 ect) You basically have an action game that requires you to kill things (in a fun way) and jump from this platform to the next avoiding obstacles and enemies along the way. These are some of the most creative games in the history of video games. In my opinion they are also some of the most fun. Fun creative action games, what more could you ask for. Tokobot is great! It is one of those rare platformers that actually uses some of the old standards and puts a new twist on them. This time you get the bad guys and jump from platform to platform, but you do it with five robots you found on a archeological dig. The robots have three major functions that help you on your journey. I will not spoil the fun of discovery, but trust me, it is fun. the controls are great, the game is light and fun. Most of all it is creative. Bottom line: Get this game for it's fun creative innovation.

Could have been much better

This is another game I purchased based on it receiving such positive reviews on Amazon. I was disappointed with it, and would like to share my experience with others.

I overall think the game is decent. But I wish they would have worked out the changing camera position and the controls a little better. This should be an awesome game, but instead it's just kind of frustrating due to, in my opinion, poor design. Some parts are more difficult than they should be simply because it's just too tough to fight enemies from all directions when you can't keep track of what direction your character is facing or keep the character under control easily.

The upside is that the puzzles are cool, the characters are cool, and the concept is really creative and fun. I just found gameplay to be too cumbersome to really enjoy. I ended up putting it down so I could play GTAIII and Lumines and other titles more and more. After getting tired of this one, I sold it on ebay. Sorry Tokobot, I really wanted to like you, I just couldn't. :(

Superb Puzzle/Platforming in an original adventure for PSP

This game is a must-buy for any PSP owner. You control a boy that has the ability to control little robots called Tokobots. By pressing the triangle button you can change the formation the robots are in. By holding the R button everyone holds hands and then you can do special moves like a spin attack, jumping stomp, climbing and hitting enemies in front of you, and much more. You solve challenging puzzles, fight enemies, and boss characters using lots of maneuvers that look cool. The controls are intuitive and responsive and by pressing on the D-pad you will bring up a menu that lets you activate special Tokobot transformations that fuse the Tokobots together. These transformations allow you to become much more powerful to fight enemies or solve puzzles. One is a giant crane arm robot, for instance. Textures and models look clean and sharp. The game looks great. Special effects are top notch. The animation is awesome too. The frame-rate is virtually perfect so everything moves very smoothly. Loading times are barely noticeable, especially when in a level. The game camera works very well. You can center it behind you with the L button and in complicated situations it changes to a scripted camera that shows you the best view. Select button changes the camera distance. Sound and music are great, they sound clear and sharp all the time. Anyone that wants something new to buy for their PSP should not pass this awesome 3D puzzle/platforming game up.

Not a lame ps2 port

Finally a game for the PSP that isn't a ps2 console port. Tokobot is a very unique platformer game. Robots follow you around and you issue them commands to enter different formations. I was very skeptical at first but after playing changed my mind. It took me a little bit of time to really get into the game.

My biggest complaint is the camera is hard to control sometimes. But pressing L generally fixes the problem. My only other complaint is the lack of any multiplayer support although it'd be hard to imagine a multiplayer tokobot.

This is one of the few games that would be appropriate content wise for childeren although some puzzles may be too complex for them.

I was talking to a friend of mine about this game and he misheard me and thought that I said toking bots. No, it's TOKOBOTS I yelled back through the staticy cell phone connection... Ask for it by name.

Fun original puzzle game, needs work with the camera

Tokobot is an interesting puzzle game along the lines of lemmings or pikmin. You are followed around by a collection of cube little robots and with their help you must overcome obstacles and slay enemies.

The key of the puzzle is to figure out which of your combinations and actions are appropriate to solve a given situation. It might be that a given enemy is best defeated by hitting him from above. In that case, you might form a circle formation with your little tokobots, and then do a jump - stamp to squash him from above. In another case, you might need to climb up a cliff face. You then get your little tokobots to form a straight line, then throw them forward so they create a ladder. If you make your tokobots go out on either side of you like wings, you can then spin them around, creating a tornado style of attack.

There really is a lot of potential here, and several of the puzzles are quite challenging. The music is light and friendly, again much like Lemmings music, and the plotline is straightforward and simple. For people innundated with blood and gore games, this is a wonderful, friendly style game with family friendly themes and no swearing.

That all being said, the camera angles really make the game frustrating at times. You might know, logically, exactly what is needed to do in order to get past a given enemy. However, because the camera doesn't line up quite right - and because the tokobots always align themselves to you based on how you are currently facing - it can take you quite a while to actually execute the move. I realize the PSP has far less control ability than a PS3 or other modern system. You can see that clearly in games like the Ratchet & Clank series where they tried to reproduce the same level of gameplay on the PSP as they had on the bigger systems. Still, since Tokobots was made specifically for the PSP, they should have been able to make the gameplay appropriate for this little unit. I expect to see these kinds of issues in a port. I don't expect to see them in a game deliberately made for the small screen.

Also, some of the save points can be rather far from each other, meaning if you're playing for a few minutes while waiting in line or riding on the bus, you can lose all that work. PSP games really should let you save anywhere, for that very reason.

Still, it's a fun game, and it's worth it to get used to the camera system. I love the graphics and the cute theme. Well recommended.

A good game with the most awesome robots ever.

Finally a game I can play for a long time! I only bought Tokobots a few hours ago and so far, I haven't been able to put it down. It's addictive almost. The graphics are well done as well as the gameplay itself. My only complaint is the camera system (you have to move around alot to get the right angle). Otherwise a great game. I wouldn't recommend it to everyone only because not everyone is into puzzle-platformers.

Tokobots

I bought this game because it had a very unique storyline: boy runs through ruins, trailed by Tokobots who help him out during his expeditions. It looked cute and fun to play. Plus, it's apparently discontinued so that made it even more valuable to me. I guess the only problem, but a major problem, is that you cannot control the camera angles. If you want to look at what's ahead of you, you have to run your character around in a circle until the camera moves to where you want it to be. This makes attacks and moves difficult---it can also give you a headache (as it did for me). If you don't mind not being able to control the camera, and compensating for this lack of control with cumbersome means, then get this game. It's fun nonetheless.

Great Concept; Not-So-Good Execution

Tokobot is a good platformer that is truly unique on the PSP. The puzzles are challenging and fun, but there are some points that are simply excessively difficult due to the temperamental control scheme, which results in the need to have perfect timing in order to pull off the maneuver. A good rental, but must be polished up in order to make it into the top-rung games on the PSP.

yeah!

Now this is a true great platformer. You begin with 6 tokobots and they help you cross obstacles and defeat enemies.Throughout the game you collect more tokobots and more machine forms which can be used to attack and help, examples are:a samurai robot,a large cane,a bomb tosser,a glider and more. The story is not expectacular but it's still good. The good part that makes this game good is how the tokobots help you through obstacles.Point is,Tokobot is a great platformer with no flaws, great price and super fast loading times.Great for everybody,so buy it and have fun with it.The problem is that the game solds out fast.
