Excellent off-road racing for novices to expert level players

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 4 / 4

The graphics on this racer are incredible for a PSP game, with lots of detail features like fire extenguishers at the start line. The cars show visual damage from any wrecks you may encounter, though at novice levels I don't feel any adverse handling effects. Rain can vary from a soft drizzle to a driving downpour. Similarly, blizzard conditions can reduce visibility, while snow, ice, and mud can all affect handling in different ways.

The cars are 4wd rally racers from Mitsubishi, Subaru, Peugeot, Skoda, Ford, etc. Each type of car has only a single paint job, with different numbers for the various drivers on that team. The cars have slightly different handling and performance traits, at least from what I can tell by switching from one to another. They all have similar top speeds and horsepower, but the amount of torque and it's peak rpm varies from one model to another.

The tracks are long affairs with many twists, turns, jumps, and road obstacles to make it a challenge every time through. Some roads have drop offs on each side, allowing no room for mistakes, while others have rocks or trees along the side, which can stop you cold if you drift off the road. Other tracks are more forgiving, with room to cut chicanes for faster times and plenty of room to drift sideways into the fencing to keep you on course. Each stage is about 3 minutes of racing, depending on how well you do.

One of the best features is a navigator who calls out the type of road and curves coming up. The game shows a color-coded symbol (grey for easy thru yellow and orange to red for severe) with the type of curves coming up and the navigator calls out audibly what you should expect. This allows you to more quickly learn the courses without having to spend hours and hours just to get through it with a decent time.

There are 16 world rally racing courses in different countries around the world. Each one has 4 stages, but at novice level you can only access the first two stages of each course (bummer). However, this does increase the game's playability, I guess, as it will take some time to get good enough to unlock the upper two difficulty levels.

Each course has a trait that includes the use of weather effects. One of the stages in Finland has heavy rain and mud, while a stage in Sweden features a driving snowstorm so thick it is difficult to see the road or the cars up ahead.

Speaking of other cars, they are represented by colored ghost images ahead of and behind you on the track. When you pass through one car and clearly have it passed, the next car ahead will be visible. This is great in that you don't have to maneuver around other cars, yet get the ability to "race" another car, which helps you see the track ahead and get better times.

You can race individual rally courses, do a time trial, or race in a championship cycling through each track. The Championship requires that you finish 5th or better on a stage to continue, so you will probably end up replaying a lot of stages until you get to really know the tracks.

I've not played enough yet to comment on what gets unlocked when you accomplish a season, but I presume it unlocks at least one of the upper levels (4 in all). The instructions are great in describing what Rally Championship racing is, but do not explain any of the mechanics of the game, other than the controls list.

So far this has gotten a lot of play time. The navigator makes it easy enough that it can provide 3 minutes of fun and the tracks/difficulty levels are challenging enough that it can provide 3 hours of intense gameplay, on demand.

Great BUT....

Great graffics, Great visual damage, Good physics, Good sound BUT NO MANUAL TRANSMISSION OPTION!!NO MANUAL TRANSMISSION OPTION!!NO MANUAL TRANSMISSION OPTION!!NO MANUAL TRANSMISSION OPTION!!NO MANUAL TRANSMISSION OPTION!!NO MANUAL TRANSMISSION OPTION!!NO MANUAL TRANSMISSION OPTION!!NO MANUAL TRANSMISSION OPTION!!
Enough said, How can we get any joy out of a RALLY game with NO MT option? As soon as reality set in and I was SURE this game had no MT option a knot formed in my stomach, I shut down the PSP, Ejected the game and placed it in it's case. Hopfully I can return it. What a waste! If you think its fun just mashing the gas and ripping up an E-brake for hours on end, go for it. Any true racing enthusiast will say this game feels empty.

Fast paced, exciting racer!

This game is probably one of the better racing games available for the PSP. It is very underrated. The physiques are much greater than most racing games available for the PSP, plus the stop doesnt end. although some Maps may get frustrating at times, considering the fast speeds, and unlimited amounts of turns and jumps you forget how annoying some things may get.

this is a fun game, and never does get boring. the choice of car is very limited, but the different levels will definitly keep you entertained. this is a great buy if you're into racing games!

I don't wanna give a game review. This game worked on my PSP and I am happy. It seems only Amazon has this game in stock. None of stores had it.

Rally Madness

This game is WAY more fast-paced than it's contemporaries like "Sega Revo Rally", but I find that the handling of the vehicles is a bit messy. Granted it IS a Rally Race, but still...

If you happen to be an avid Rally Car fan, then this game is for you.

Good effort, poor steering

I should start by saying that I prefer racing simulations to arcade style games. From this perspective, WRC starts out looking good enough - the graphics are excellent, and car physics seem reasonable. However, the steering is overly sensitive. (Yes, even after calibrating the joystick at the PSP system information screen.) If there were a steering sensitivity option, WRC would be just about perfect. Without it, control is difficult and the racing can be frustrating.
