Who turned out the lights?

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 0 / 1

I'm a big fan of the darkness, it's where I spend most of my time because I'm so hideous... but alas, I have my video games. The Darkness is involving and has a good story line but all the obiligatory conversations with old Itallians and phone calls with ranting strangers can seriously cut in to your 'dishing out some Darkness' time. The graphics, selection of weapons and plot make this a good game but the ability to command an army of Darklings and use manifestations of the Darkness to implode, impale and devour your enemies (lots of fun) make it a great one. I only wish it was a little longer and that finishing off Paulie had a more... 'hands on' approach.

Fun and entertaining

This is the first game outside of the Mario universe that I actually played all the way through. I tend to get bored with games and give up on them, but this one was rather addictive. The darkness as a character was very clever and the gameplay was better than I expected. The only gripe I have is that the ending, compared to the rest of the game, was a bit on the weak side. Other than that, I highly recommend this, if for nothing else but watching To Kill A Mockingbird in game.

es pavo.. pero muy extrano!

This is one of the best games I've ever played. If you like games that are not too hard but to easy this is the game for you. It's pretty easy to figure out. There's a lot of guns and blood. It's a game for adults. I just bought this game for about two weeks and I've played it everyday so far.

Too Short

I enjoyed every minute of this game. Unfortunately, there weren't as many minutes as I would have liked. I'm not a hard core gamer, but I was able to finish this game in about 40-50 hours. That may seem like a lot of time, but I usually take my time with games and do all the side quests and other extra stuff I can. If a hard-core gamer were to play through this game, I imagine they could play through the main story in about 15-20 hours.

The good -

Excellent Graphics - the best I've seen in a console game.

Superb Voice Acting - it's so good you forget that it's acting.

Excellent musical score - some very cool metal in the soundtrack, as well as other classical and ambient music that is cued to gameplay.

Easy to learn intuitive controls

The Darkling's humor - pay attention to them. Especially when you have more than one with you at a time. Their back-and-forth dialogue is hilarious at times.

Storyline - very gripping, and even surprising at times, although the Darkness mind parts felt kinda outta place.

The bad -

Too short - I didn't want the game to end, but it did - and too soon at that.

Sketchy Darkling AI - I can't count how many times I was hiding around a corner from enemies and the gunner darkling shot me while shooting at the wall where the enemies were. The lightkiller Darkling is a waste of time - there were several times when I would stand directly under a light, losing my darkness power and the lightkiller would just stand there with me. Finally, when I would shoot the light out, the lightkiller would decide that he was going to destroy the already destroyed light. The Kamikaze didn't seem to care if I was near the enemies that he wanted to blow up - pretty painful at times. The Berzerker was ok.

Those are the only things I could find wrong with the game.

I'm hoping that there will be a sequel to this game, or that at the very least, the developers will make other games like it.

Not only is this an excellent game, I got it for only $30. =)

Other than the psychotic darklings and the too-short story, this is a superb game. If it had only been about 25% longer I would have given it 5 stars.

More of an RPG than Shooter

Well the game is obviously an FPS, but it has many game play elements of an RPG. The game tells an involving, but dark, story of a hitman out for revenge against his uncle. The controls are much like other FPS games with the added ability of controlling an ever evolving demon parasite. you level up your powers by consuming the hearts of your dead enemies. This is certianly not a game for children or people who shy away from this type of extreme violence. You might think such gratuitous violence would take away from the story. However it involves you in many side quests to help the innocent and down trodden. The game does great job of making the Main character Jackie Estacado relateable and Human. after it draws you in it takes you to the frightening depths of hell itself. The violence actually does more to show how repulsive this enemy within is than to make you say oh cool I just ripped out this guys heart. and the story does a great job explaining why you remain allied with this "enemy". The other Main plus about this game is it's openendedness. Unlike other games that have levels this game is set up more like GTA or even Oblivion where you talk to people and accept missions. You go back and forth to different parts of the city to accomplish your goals sometimes revisiting parts. to get to anouther part of the city you wait for the subway. Trains come by pretty often so you really don't wait long, but you have to watch the sign to see which track the trains comming on and be carful not to stand on the tracks because the train won't stop. This all adds to the immersion of this game. They have also left off any kind of HUD. you can tell your hurt when your vision starts to go blurry but there is no health bar. Instead of a hud map you can find information kiosks and maps signs with the typical "you are here" mark. The one complaint I have is the aiming reticule. It appears as a small dot on the screen and is hard to see. the jerky auto aim is more disruptive than anything.

Save your money

I picked up this game along with Resistance when I first bought my PS3 after reading a few shining reviews in the gaming mags. According to these reviews, the real selling point of this game is the engrossing plot. Unfortunately, I was never able to enjoy the plot because of the rediculous gameplay. The whole "avoid the light" thing is interesting, but the real flaw here is the game is TOO real to life. There are dozens of street lamps on every map and you'll have to pause every 20 feet to shoot them all out to avoid losing power, nevermind that there are hordes of gangsters trying to cap you all the while. The "darkness powers" are supposed to make this whole process a little bit easier, but aren't really that effective. Don't even get me started on the uselessness of the darklings, who die almost instantly after touching any light whatsoever.

Ignoring all of the things that are supposed to make this game unique, it doesn't even stand up as a decent first person shooter (just to give you an idea, aiming is facilitated by a rediculous red dot in the middle of the screen). There's no effective way to manage your weapons, so when you run out of ammo with one gun the next one just pops randomly into your hands out of some invisible queue. The idea here was that they were trying to get rid of the "heads-up display" that can tend to block a lot of the action in first person shooters. Unfortunately, it just ended up being a big mess, and it's not like there are no menus involved at all here. Every time you get a new objective you must enter a menu to figure out what you're supposed to be doing. It's not that big of a deal, a lot of games do this, though I do find it somewhat annoying. The real problem with this setup is the fact that the font they used is so tiny it's almost unreadable on a standard definition TV. If you're like the mojority of PS3 owners out there who haven't yet made the switch to high-def, you'll be doing a lot of squinting.

The one good thing I can say about this game is the graphics are pretty good, but there are a lot of games out there with good graphics AND gameplay. As for the supposedly wonderful plot, it boils down to every lame mobster cliche in the book with some tacked on occult powers. If you must experience "The Darkness", just pick up the comics. On the other hand, if you want to spend 20 minutes sneaking into little Suzie's bedroom to unplug her nightlight so your minions won't be incinerated on the street below, by all means, play the game.

The Darkness could be better

The Darkness is a game that is engaging yet at times restricted. The programmers could have made the game more open ended. IF your expecting a openended game like GTA than your in for a surprise, the game is good but many times in the game I feel that theres not enough. THeres not enough civilians walking about doing their business. Almost all the charactersin the subway are the same, I dont recall anyone ever coming to a subway just to be there. This game is a good game but its for one time play only.

Ok game overall

The game is fun and all but it gets to be pretty redundant a times. Lots of action and gunfights, but a horrible ending and and ok storyline.
