'Survival Horror FPS'

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 10 / 12
Date: April 06, 2005
Author: Amazon User

I picked it up last night and so far I think its absolutely awesome. I have never felt this immersed in an FPS environment since I first played Half Life on the PC. The graphics are simply jaw dropping, but I think the vaunted sound effects are a mixed bag. The radio chatter is great. The dependence on sound to alert you to the presence of unseen enemies has never been done better. On the other hand, some of the weapons sound pretty weak. And in some instances, crucial sound effects such as dialogue, gunfire, and monster noises are too drowned out and muted by background noise. But still, these aren't really major issues.

The whole idea of having to switch between a flashlight and your weapon does seem ridiculous from a logical perspective, but I quickly forgot about this and began loving this mechanic while actually playing the game. It definitely adds a strategic element to the game and enhances the overall creepiness and immersion.

Although the actual gameplay mechanics are very basic, this is unlike any other FPS I've played in awhile. The feel of the old Doom is definitely there though. But this time the presentation is 100 times more effective. But as far as FPS games go, this is not a Halo style shooting rampage. Its more of a 'survival horror FPS'. The pacing is more similar to that of a Resident Evil game than Halo. In the Halo campaigns you always feel like the unstoppable predator. But in Doom 3 you feel like you're the prey... like YOU'RE the one who's being hunted. You're not running forward, spraying bullets like a juggernaut, as in Halo. You're moving slowly and very cautiously. You're shining the flashlight in every corner of a room before you dare take another step forward. There's a constant sense of tension, and the effect is just awesome. I'm not necessarily saying its better than Halo. Both games are great in their own way. But they have a very different vibe from one another, which I find refreshing. Although its too soon in the game for me to know for sure, I'd guess that Halo probably has more longevity in the long run. But there's no denying the powerful experience in Doom 3. Its very obvious to me that the Id Software folks are true masters of the art form. Only true masters can stick to such a simple barebones gameplay formula, yet make it so fresh and effective.

To those who might be worried about the game being repetitive, I'd remind you that the entire FPS genre is repetitive. An FPS game is basically built around one moment of fun repeated over and over again. But when its done right (such as in Halo or Doom3) it keeps you enjoying every moment. Here's one scenario that has already happened to me numerous times in Doom 3: An imp pops up in the dark out of nowhere. I crouch just in time to avoid the fireball he chucks at my head (sometimes he hits me). I strafe/duck to avoid a few more fireballs as he closes the distance. When he's almost right in my face, I explode him like a watermelon with a well aimed shotgun blast. As I said, this scenario has happened numerous times, in a bunch of slightly different variations. And not once has it failed to put a big smile on my face. Doom 3 is great!

Doom 3 is a pretty great game with some obvious cheap tricks ( flashlight or gun choice) and horror movie conventions to give you the heebie jeebies if you play alone in the dark.

What bothers me is the lame -ass jesus freaks dissing the game because of it's satanic imagery-

to those I say-
Hey gomer, did you see the box before you boutght the game?
Notice the Demon on the cover?
see the M -rating?
Are you also boycotting devilled ham?
do you think I am going to hell for eating deviled eggs?
Did you notice in the game you fight against the forces of evil?
Would you prefer a game where you murder realisticly rendered humans in the name of patriotism (navy seals, rising son, etc.)?

Get A Life!
If jesus comes back tomortrow I think sci-fi horror video games are going to be pretty low on his list of human evilness.

rather than wasting your time posting on amazon go out and actually help someone you dumb -ass fanatics!

The Ultimate FPS

Doom3 is by far the most intense FPS ever made. I bought Doom3 the day it released and played through it in about 3 or 4 days. This game has it's pros and cons as every game does.

Pros: Great Graphics
One of the most frightening games I've ever played
Demon models are fantastic

Cons: Doom3's multiplayer could be alot better
Story can be a little confusing

Either way, Doom3 is a must play. Everytime you load up Doom3, it will be the most intense gameplay you've ever witnessed. If you enjoy this game, be sure to look out for the upcoming expansion for Doom3, Resurrection Of Evil for PC as well. To maximize the intensity, make sure you play at night, turn up the volume on your TV, and enjoy your experience.

One of the best games for original xbox

This is probably in most xboxers top 5 somewhere below Halo. Excellent new engine now used in next gen games from ID and others (Prey, Quake4). Game looks gorgeous.

Weaknesses are thin story (though this franchise never had or needed one in the past), no offline co-op, no wide open spaces as with original Doom games (though they may be trying to give a clausterphobic feel), not enough Hell levels (but the game is enormously long). But these aren't enough to keep it out of 5 star territory. I'd give it 4.8/4.9 if possible. The flashlight thing people make a big deal about didn't bother me as much as others - they are obviously trying to increase the scare factor by doing this.

Very good job by the folks that started the FPS gaming innovation, ID.

Doom 3, The greatest Horror fragfest ever imaginable

Dom 3 is so awesome. It blends scary gameplay and first person shooting into the scariest dang game you will ever play. If you liked Cuthulu: Call of Darkness, then you will fall in love with this game.
The best aspect of it is Single Player. You go through every room never knowing if or what is going to jump out at you. It could be nothing or it could be a Hellknight. You never know.
The graphics. Oh my gosh. How did Id do that magic it did. These are simply put the best darn graphics you will ever see in an origional Xbox game. They blast Halo 2 away and greatly rival that of Splinter Cell and Far Cry Instincts.
Controls. The controls take a little getting used to but in just a couple of minutes you will be running and gunning like you'd been doing it all your life. You can even program your favorite weapons to each direction in the D-pad for instant switching action.
Weapons. These are some of the wierdest looking guns i have ever seen. The pistol looks like it got smashe to pieces and then glued back together and and the Machine Gun is just plain dumb looking even though it is one of the most useful weapons in the game. My personal favorite, and i think i speak for most others is definatly the Shotgun. It is powerful up close and lets you take out enemies double time.
The game goes back to race for the Biggest gun (the Rocket Launcher) multiplayer. Whoever has it is more than likely going to win. I much prefer Co-Op Single player because it is as much fun as normal single player.

Doom 3 is an excellent game, when you first play it, it is pretty damn scary. But after a while it gets to be kind of the same old dodge fireballs and kill the demon. Usually they'll add in surprise like a pinky demon will bust through the wall.

One of the greatest Horror FPS's out there

Your are a marine sent to Mars to investigate the strange occurances in the labs as well as in Mars City. Lights have been going out for no reason, people have heard whispers when nobody's been around, more cases of insanity have occured, and people are leaving more often for unusual reasons. From the beginning, you know something is not right, but you're trained for this. After you delve deeper into the truth though, you soon find that this might be bigger than just disappearances. Once you find one of the people the base shakes and a portal to Hell is opened up. While in this chaos a strange fiery skull jumps into the scientist you have been sent to secure and he becomes a strange monster similar to a zombie.

This is when your comfort zone sinks to the bottom of the scale. You are thrown into a dark world that seems to have no end. Most of the hallways are barely lit forcing you to pull out your trusty flashlight. But this isn't Halo, so you must either hold out your weapon or keep your flashlight out. You can attack with your flashlight, I just don't recommend it unless you are low on ammo. Speaking of which, ammo can run out quickly in this entry but you can always score some more if you pick up other people's PDA's. Finding them can be kind of hard sometimes though, because of the poor lighting in some of the rooms.

The gameplay is pretty solid though, most of your mission are just move from point A to point B while trying to survive. Sometimes, doors will be locked and you wil have to find a key or somebody's PDA to access the lock. The enemies are extremely creepy. The zombies hide very well but the demons in this game can be warped to your location.

Some of the eerie effects of this game are not B-grade either (well maybe once but that wasn't a huge one). Sometimes a well lit room will lose the lights (including your flashlight) and then reapper will monsters around. Others include creepy visions where things are not right with the inclusion of voices in the background, quiet voices. But the absolute creepy one has to be the living landscapes similar to those seen in the Silent Hill games. You'll enter a room and things seem to be alive, add to the fact you can sometimes see corpses of men talking to you with ripped out insides.

You will love this game if you love FPS or are fans of the series in general. Keep in mind though that this is not the same game as the first two in the fact that enemies do not swarm you or respawn constantly.

Pros
- Great Storyline, a first real in-depth storyline
- Creepy lighting effects
- The eerie things that can happen to you such as the lights going out and hearing voices
- The enemies are done wonderfully
- The survival horror aspect where you must conserve ammo
- Awesome graphics
- The ability to play online co-op, which is exclusive to the Xbox game

Cons
- The graphics are not as good as those on the PC
- Its easy to get lost in the complex due to identical rooms

STUPID REVIEWERS!!!!

If you give this game a bad review you must be an idiot. The game delievers on all fronts as far as horror is concerned. So what if you have a flash light. If you haven't noticed they make it very easy for you to switch between flashlight and weapon just by hitting the white botton on your contoller so stop complaining. Some have suggested that it would be better if you could tie the flash light to the end of your gun. What sence does that make when you constantly switching back and forth between Guns? Think for a secound.Maybe it would make more sence to have a flashlight built into your helmit but then again it be kind of strange for the developers to have you walking around the wole game with a construction hat on just to help the players see in the dark. The darkness is there for a reason. It's suppose to add to the thrill of the game. As far as night vision goggles go this is not "Splinter Cell".

The only thing i find about th game to be a little off is the monsters comming out of the walls. I don't mean them braking through the walls i mean a door sliding up and there right behind it in like a little toilet stall. Makes it look as though they were waiting in that tight little space the whole time untill you show up. Not very monster like if you ask me. Sounds more like something Haunted Houses do at Halloween.

I say buy the game. The variety Guns and Monsters as well as the Graphics in the game are really good. This isn't a party game. More like a haunted house game that you can play with a friend on co-op. If you want a party game buy a gamecube and get Halo 2.
