There IS an easy mode that IS much easier...

This game is fantastic. I've never reviewed anything on Amazon but this game is incredible. Definitely worth the $20 I paid for it used.

To enter easy mode die 3 times in the first level and agree that you need help when prompted. This makes you a 'ninja dog' (not a 3d fighting dog---it's an easy mode) and the game is then possible for the casual gamer.

Even on easy the game will take a great deal of time and a mastry of the weapons. I've probably put about 15 hours into the easy mode and am on level 11 but it is much easier. Normal mode is quite difficult and it annoyed me to the point of almost giving up. Like everyone on here says.... it's HARD. I'll do it on my next time through. But use easy mode and you'll be fine once you learn the techniques.

This is my favorite game for my 360 and it's not even a 360 game, that's how awesome it is...I haven't played anything else since I bought it.

Thinking Man's Action Game

In the vein of Devil May Cry 3 comes Ninja Gaiden Black. As difficult as DMC 3 may come at you sometimes, it pales in comparison to Ninja Gaiden Black. (Bear in mind that I never completed the original Ninja Gaiden on XBox on Normal, having been stopped at the military installation. However, I am progressing on Normal in Ninja Gaiden Black and have made it further (the Caverns) so far.) Ninja Gaiden is a thinking man's action game through and through. One must find the enemies' weaknesses and exploit them with some reflexes and an active brain. Given that you have ample weapons, magic, shurikens and projectiles, one can whittle away at your enemies. The graphics are spectacular as they were before. And the controls are better this time around with much more fluidity on Ryu Hyubasa's (the main character) part.

Ironically though, despite what people are saying the enemies are harder this time around, I find them easier (at least on Normal) than the previous installment.

Overall, this is a great game, but for a casual gamer, like me, this game will teach you persistence and patience. This game is not intended for the weak of heart or patience.

Ryu Hayabusa is back in black and better than ever

The most badass videogame returns with even more stuff. The game is absolutely terrific in every way. Graphics are absolutely gorgeous (and I rarely ever use this word unless I'm describing Nicole Kidman) and gameplay is fantastic. 5 difficulty levels, a crap load of costumes to unlock and a hours of mission playing (after you beat the game once). It's a thing of beauty. A classic and most definatly worth buying.

The best action game I have ever played! Enuff said!

Anybody that is an action game fan needs to play this game! Halo 2 gets all the hype but this game is way more fun in my opinion! I have been playing videogames for about 20 years and this is the best one I have ever played as well as the most challenging. I beat Master Ninja mode and still can't believe i did it. The action is fast and furious and it has the best boss battles I have ever seen in a game. Some of the best moments in the game to me are the boss fight with the Bone Dragon on level 10, I mean look at the size of the thing! Also, the fights with Alma and Doku are standout moments too. The music is great and sets the tone for the battles and Ryu plays like a real ninja complete with bow and arrow, ninja stars and ninja magic. There are so many cool weapons and ways to link combos together and the game allows you the creativity to choose how you want to dispatch your enemy. Also, I still can't believe the graphics that are in this game for an Xbox title. I played Ninja Gaiden and the Hurricane Packs when they came out and then I got this game for the added content. Even after beating the game it is fun to go back and play to find different ways to beat all the enemies and also don't forget that all the missions in mission mode have different difficulty levels too! The move set Ryu has is ridiculous and the fighting engine is so well done you have to play the game over and over. I have never logged as many hours on a game as this and the only reason I got rid of my copy is because I am going to get Ninja Gaiden Sigma when it comes out for the PS3 next year due to Rachel will be playable and it will have some new enemies and bosses and more added content. Man, talk about squeezing as much out of a game as you can before you make part 2! The only game that can top this game in my opinion is Sigma and part 2 when it comes out. I think they are testing out the PS3 hardware with Sigma to see if Ninja Gaiden 2 will appear on it. Hopefully it will be on the 360 and PS3 because this is a game everyone should enjoy! This game is a TIMELESS CLASSIC AND IF YOU DON"T HAVE IT STOP READING THIS AND GO GET IT NOW!

My most favorite game !!!

NG is my most favorite game among my other 20+ xbox games. It's insanely addictive, I've completed the original NG game three times at Normal, Hard and Very Hard levels. It's a game of action and strategy. The more you play, the better is your skills. Then you can strategize your action against your enemies' weakness (you can observe their pattern during fighting). I bought the NG Black yesterday and I had skipped my dinner already !!! I guess my message is if you are new to this game, don't be discouraged at the beginning, give it a try a few more minutes...you will definitely enjoy it later.

Ultimate action game

Coincidentally, my favorite game until now was Shinobi on PS2. This, however, definately tops it. The graphics sound and game play are among the best ever on the current console generation.

Difficulty is debatable. It's by far NOT an easy game. But it took me 4 months to beat Shinobi and here I am, half way through NGB in a week. (Normal difficulty)

I'm surprised to hear people complaining about restarting the level if you die (or was it like this in the previous version of NG?), as I felt that the developers were rather generous with save points throughout the game.

I'm new to XBOX, but this is the best game I've played so far, by a long shot.

The best video game just got better..

This is an upgraded version of the original game. Some new features in this "Black" version include.. 1) classic Arcade game and new cut scenes, 2) new weapons, 3) Mission mode & new enemies.

1) Well, the classic arcade game was a big disappointment because it is slow-moving AND you only use punches, kicks, and throws - there are no weapons. I thought the NES version was 10x better. Also, I misunderstood what they meant by cut scenes. I thought it was the beautiful cgi cinema, but all you get are non-cinema animation such as Ayanae reviving you when you accept the easy "Ninja Dog" mode.

2) On the positive side, the new staff weapon is excellent - it has a long range, and you can do a variety of lightning-fast techniques (There's also a smoke bomb, but it seems rather useless).

3) Finally, we have the mission mode. THIS IS THE MAIN REASON TO BUY THIS GAME. Once you beat the game in normal mode, you unlock Mission mode, which is where you will find new creatures such as Ashtar - your evil self, and this female demon with tentacle arms used as whips (they might appear in Hard Mode too, but normal mode was difficult enough for me so I never tried it). Start off with 10 missions and you must beat 5 to unlock an additional 5.

To avoid any spoilers about the missions, don't read the next two paragraphs.

First off, this mode is HARD.. not only do you fight big bosses, but you also encounter their minor henchmen at the same time. There are certain techniques to use to beat each mission, but you always have to be alert and thinking about your next move. I hated this mode when I first unlocked it because the words GAME OVER kept appearing on the screen, but I always found myself going back because I wanted to unlock more missions and see new enemies (each set of 5 missions has a catchy title but you don't know what it's about or what enemies will appear until it is unlocked). Despite dying 95% of the time, I finally got to my next to last set.. called Giants of the Underworld or something like that. The last mission is called Eternal Legend, have no idea if there's a new demon or if it includes the giant Angel/Skull Spider boss.. but I can't wait to find out.

BTW, for those who get frustrated, you do get a break in between. There is a mission set called "Fateful Confrontation" which I thought was very easy because you only fight one-on-one with Ashtar in 5 different settings. The Jump/Neck-Slash technique is all you need to do to beat him. To me this set is the most enjoyable. For one mission, you can jump up to building ledges and Ashtar will follow you like a shadow. then you can do a spinning piledriver on him (something which I saw in an intro scene, but haven't been able to do myself yet). And if this is too easy for you, don't worry.. the next set includes one challenging mission where you fight 2 Ashtars, one fights with a Flail, and the other with a Staff!

The Hardest Game Ever

I'd heard this game was hard. I'd prepped myself and gotten rid of all distractions so I could focus on the game...
And it completely and thoroughly destroyed me. I could not even get to the end of the second chapter on the Normal difficulty.
I used to be an avid gamer. I haven't played much lately so this game has truly humbled me. This game is seriously a challenge and sometimes it's a matter of using the right weapon at the right time or using the right new technique or blocking at the right time, but sometimes it's just impossible. Button-mashing won't get you as far as some other games.
It's a very technical game and a challenge. The only reason I don't rate it a full 5 is because I don't believe it's truly accessible for average/normal gamers, but I won't knock it more than that because I can't blame it too much for me sucking at it. You'll see people brag about how far they got into it or how they can go through the game without getting hit, but I'm happy I just got past the 3rd level on the Ninja Dog (easiest) difficult which you unlock by dying like 3 times in a row on the first chapter.
The game is well worth the cost. The graphics and overall gameplay are quite entertaining nonetheless. I still recommend it even though it's probably one of the most frustrating games ever, it's also some of the most gratifying.. even if it's only on easy.

One Of The Best XBox Titles On The Market..

Not only is this one of the best Xbox titles on the market..its probably one of the best "priced" Xbox titles on the market. i actually purchased this game at a wal-mart for around 26 bucks, and video game wise, it was probably the best purchase i ever made. i've played games in the $60 range for Xbox that cant compare to this game in any form or fashion. this game has tons of replay value. as you progress in the different levels of difficulty, new enemies crop up that change the game drastically. this isnt a game where you just get more power taken off and its harder to kill enemies on the tougher difficulties. things change in the harder difficulties..you begin to learn new strategies because you are faced with more perilous odds and enemies. and what seems impossible at the harder difficulty levels is just a matter of figuring out the puzzle and trying a new strategy. i honestly dont think i've purchased a more well rounded game for the price since i purchased Neverwinter Nights for my pc. so if you're a fan of third person action games, this is probably the perfect game for you..
