What happened?

My first experience with the Worms franchise was the superb Worms: Armageddon released on the Sega Dreamcast many moons ago. Armageddon was a terrific port of the PC title, marred only by static computer AI and occasional slowdown. The multiplayer component is where Worms has always shined; I have fond memories of burning the midnight oil with my roommates, ninja-roping and Holy-Hand-Grenading our collegiate concerns away. Both my ex-roommate and I chewed at the bit when we heard about this port to the DS. My expectations for this `new' title were colored from my experience on the DC - tight, deceptively skillful gameplay that awards a little foresight and some occasional bravado.

Let's cut to the chase - if you have any prior experience with 2D Worms, this will be an excruciating time for you. Truth be told, the wireless loading screen was the first give-away that Open Warfare is a rushed product; I had to voice my apprehension when I first saw the font they chose for the interface. That may sound glib, but from the title screen through the decidedly thin gameplay, you can't help but wonder why more thought and time weren't put into this.

The first disappointment you'll endure is a depleted reserve of weapons. The bat, holy hand grenade, and other favorites are all conspicuously missing. What weapons are included are buggy at best: shotguns miss at close range; the homing missile is worthless due to terrible programming; kamikazes won't blow up barrels; grenades bounce haphazardly, rendering them useless; and what's worse, the ninja rope is buggy to the point of exasperation. Worms' famously underperforming AI has reached a new low as well. You'll pay witness to comp. worms walking off of cliffs, failing to attack easy targets, or simply sitting in one place and failing to act. The presentation is famously bad: grainy sprites that a mother couldn't love, ugly menu screens, and inexplicable slowdown & visual glitches will sap whatever desire you might possess to stomach a few rounds. The game honestly looks as if it's being run on a low resolution emulator.

Ah, but what of the multiplayer component? Single card download play was one of the game's selling points for me. But let's be serious here... vintage 2D Worms multiplayer is still fun due to the outrageous shots, the full screen ninja-rope/fire punch combos, the wanton destruction. When you strip Worms of its most enjoyable weapons, its hit detection, its explosive combos (you'll notice right away that things don't `blow up' the way you want them to), and its quirky and endearing graphic appeal, you have a shell of a game. THQ has fleeced us on what might as well be a beta demo of a sad-sack Worms clone. Don't waste your time or money here.

Don't buy!

After reading the reviews on Amazon, I went against my better judgment and bought the game. First because I loved the Worms games on PC and i was looking for a good stragety game. Big mistake! The biggest problem with this game is the worms on the screen are so small and it's very difficult to see where they are. Everything is squished together and it's not worth straining your eyes just to find your worm or the opponent. Please, if you're looking for a good Worms game, stick with PC. The DS screen is too small.

buggy and incomplete

I was a huge fan of the worms series back 5 years ago, but have yet to find a good version come out since Worms Armageddon. This one is no different. The display is blissfully back to 2d side scrolling instead of the recent 3d versions. But with the small screen and poor cross hairs it is nearly impossible to aim anything. But that isn't the only thing that makes this game feel unfinished and buggy, there is the menu system which you can't use the buttons or d-pad. Also the enemy worms think forever! The weapons are limited and the challenges are not terribly challenging. Don't waste your money.

Wasn't worth the wait

I remember back when the DS first came out, Worms was an "announced" title. 1 1/2 years later, the game finally came out, and to be honest, I have no idea what took so long considering what I got.

This version of the game has Multiplayer, Challenge mode, and Quick mode (plus all the configuration options). The Challenge mode is severely lacking, as it is preset to be 10 minutes, 1 minute turn, and these options are not changeable. So after every move I make, I have to wait a full minute (and lose that time before sudden death) due to poor AI.

The game keeps track of your teams win/loss/draw statistics, but not of individual worms, and the team stats can only be viewed after finishing a quick match. So much for having a "favorite" worm or captain.

The amount of map generation is quite good, but still follows in line as none of the sequels to this series has had the variety of map forms as the original Worms for Playstation.

Weapons? The Banana Bomb and Sheep are still here, thankfully, but sorely lacking are the Holy Hand Grenade and the Sheep Launcher, SuperSheep, and Baseball Bat. The coolest weapons in the game leave, but the basic prod, dragonball, and kamikaze, all very poor in damage, remain.

I am a bit disappointed with this game, but it is mostly due to my own high hopes. Yes, this game is decent, and worth at least a rental. But it certainly isn't worth the price tag right now.

Amazing game

This game is awesome, I do not have it, but my friend and I did download play and we played multiplayer and it rocks. My friend does not have many weapons yet, but it still is awesome. The only worms I've played are the 3D ones. Worms 4 Mayhem (Funny and fun game) and Worms Fort Under Siege.(Also a cool game) I like this game and it would not be better if it was 3D. The shotguns on this DS game are awesome, they're powerful, you get two shots, and they destroy the landscape pretty good. The sound on this game is awesome. I'd get this game if you love 3D or 2D worms, or if you just love both. This game is awesome, get it and I mean KNOW!

Worms: Open Warfare - Not quite worms...

I have played almost all of the predecessing Worms games, and this one just doesn't pack enough of what makes the game genuinely "Worms." The fact that you cannot use your custom made teams in multiplayer leaves your frag matches lacking. The inability to give your teams their own "voice" also puts this game in the sub-par category. When you select one of the voice schemes, every team sounds the same. The limited supply of weapons, and the inadequate amount of damage for most weapons really places this game low on my "fun factor" list. Compared to Worms: Armageddon, this game is minor league.

Trying to Worm their way out of 3D (not a kid's review)

I said NOT a kid's review!
Anway, I have just turned 14 and got Worms Open Warfare for my DS as asked. I have loved all of the previous Worms games, even the 3d versions and was glad that they had turned back to the classic 2d style. Unfortunately, the moment the title screen came into view, I was BITTERLY disappointed.

The graphics are awful, the weapons have more than halved in number, there are now only 4 worms a team, the backgrounds are un editable, there are only a few types of landscape, the voicebanks are limited, you stick to oil drums and can't move, the cpu takes AGES NOT TO MOVE?!?, you can only change a tiny amount of options and they even lie to you! I was hoping to see a handheld version of Worms where you could change the look of your worms, so the front cover displays. This, despite it being my own fault, was just plain stupid.

I am happily about to take this game back after it's failure, with just this for the Team 17 corp: slip away from Nintendo and stick to Sony. Cheers
