Innovative gameplay and music that sticks in your brain...

Two ingredients for a classic game. Much like Katamari Damacy, this game makes you play in a new way. As opposed to games that really require additional fingers to play properly, this one uses only three buttons; the L and R shoulder buttons and the "O". With the shoulders you tilt the world so you can roll back and forth along the brightly-colored landscape, and with the "O" you spilt into little blobs and join back up again.

The levels are works of art, each one unique. It's a shame there's no hint book for the game - poster size copies of each level would be a delight to see. (In Japan they actually posted the entire first level as a mural-sized ad in subways)

The obstacles are as cute as they come; not since the Mega Man series have villains been so cute and infuriating.

And the music...oh god the music. All gibberish (so they didn't have to be translated) and all adorable, you'll be humming them for days.

This little diversion will dominate your life. The replay value is infinite - you'll spend days trying to get that last berry.

LocoRoco Best PSP Game, Clearly a Hit...

At TGS (Tokyo Game Show) 2005, Sony of Japan announced that they were developing an original game for PSP: LocoRoco. Instead of the usual ports or re-creations or compliations of retro games, LocoRoco is a completely new venture. It focuses on a fictional planet where happy LocoRocos (yellow blobs) and MuiMuis (blue figures) live. One day, it is invaded by the Moja Troop, who eat LocoRoco. Your job is to tilt the surface to lead LocoRocos through their planet without getting eaten. You collect flowers, which gives you another LocoRoco. You can combine and separate LocoRocos, as well. You collect bugs as a food source for LocoRocos. Additionally, when you collect MuiMuis, you can get house parts.

The game is very easy. As a PSP player of Tekken:DR, complicated combo moves and annoying nuisances with the analog stick make PSP games hard to play--especially ports that we're used to seeing on PSOne and PS2. With LocoRoco, you use 3 buttons during gameplay. The shoulder buttons (LEFT and RIGHT) are used to tilt, tapping the circle button separates LocoRocos, holding the circle button combines them, and holding down both shoulder buttons makes your LocoRocos jump. A lot easier said than done. A demo disc found at EBGames and a demo for download on the PSP Memory Stick show these capabilities and can be found for download at http://www.us.playstation.com/locorocopcdemo. You must have v2.71 for this to work, I might add.

Besides a "career" mode, which pivots you into different courses with different color LocoRocos, there are "mini-games" like a Mui-Mui Crane, Chuppa game, and more. You must collect a certain amount of bugs/pickories every game to play these games. Also, there is the LocoRoco House Editor feature that allows you to create a house for your LocoRoco. I haven't yet tested it out but it is an excellent feature, I presume. By collecting MuiMuis in games, you get house parts and you can build a house for your LocoRoco.

Besides all of the gameplay features, a large soundtrack is full of bubbly, interesting, and catchy jingles with unique voices. While some find it annoying, it is very catchy and it gets stuck in my head. LocoRocos even sing along in gibberish while the song goes on. MuiMuis do, as well. The graphics are 2D like Mario, which make loading times non-existant and shows off the capability of the PSP's high-performance graphics.

In the end, LocoRoco is a game that is intuitive, simple, and beautiful to look at. It is fitted only for the PSP, and it should. Additionally, the gameplay is excellent, pivoting you into many different scenarios with many different characters (like Moja, who attack you or Chuppa, who catapults you into hidden areas). It is clearly worth $40--clearly.

PROS-
Intuitiveness and Simplicity: Easy to play, fitted for the PSP
Shows off PSP Graphic Capabilities: Beautiful to look at
Different Maps, Characters, Colors: Very unique and fresh
Not a Port or Re-creation/compliation: A completely original game
No Long Loading Times: 2D graphics prevents this
Mini-Games: Lets you take a break from main gameplay

CONS-
Longevity: Only 40 levels makes you wish for more...
Should've Used Characters More: Some characters pop up once...
You have to pay money made in career to access mini-games

Addictive and Innovative

Simple yet extremely fun to play, LocoRoco is an excellent contender for the most innovative game of any platform this year (Okami is the only other contender in this area). With a unique graphics style and easy to use but difficult to master gameplay, LocoRoco at first seems easy. You just use the shoulder buttons to shift the world and help the LocoRocos escape the evil invaders. Then you try to find all the LocoRocos per level, all of the MuiMuis and other bonus items and this game suddenly becomes a lot harder. The brilliant thing is you can still advance even if you do not find all of these items. With fantastic music and gameplay, this game is rapidly becoming my favorite for the PSP.

Great, gorgeous fun for all ages

With all the games I play, there are few that are simple, delightful fun. Loco Roco definitely falls into this category. The game is easy to learn, has great replayability, and can really be enjoyed by all ages.

Here's the basics. You begin as a yellow, happy blob. When you use the shoulder buttons, you tilt the world left or right, making the blob roll. You can also press both buttons so the blob springs into the air. As you eat certain flowers, the blob grows in size. If you hit an area too narrow for your big blob, you can break up into all of the mini-blobs, and later regroup.

This may sound odd - but it is a TON of fun. The backgrounds are all works of art, with a wide variety of themes. You can be in an ice world and slide along on super-slick pathways. There are lots of hidden rooms and secret bonusses to search for. The little blobs are just so happy! They sing along with the music, enjoy the sliding around and celebrate at the end. It's really a game that you have a great deal of enjoyment at every step of the way.

There are little mini-games, and you unlock "house pieces" that let you build your very own blob maze. By positioning the various house pieces, you can create an endless set of loops for your blobs to go around in.

With all the games out there that have you swearing at your machine in frustration because of the inane controls or frustrating enemies, it is really a joy to find a game that is always fun. Even if you don't do well, it's fun, and it encourages you to try again to do better. You only get 10 of the little blobs to the end of the level? That's a great start - and give it another go to see if you can find even more! Between the catchy songs and the beautiful backgrounds, you really do want to leap into the fray again and explore every little angle.

This is a great game for young kids, mature grandparents, and everyone in between. The gameplay is easy enough to learn, and fulfilling enough that you'll be addicted soon.

Highly recommended.

Disgustingly Cute

After downloading a free, single stage demo from the PSP site, I fell in love with Loco Roco. It's very cute and very Japanese, with perky, happy songs that have no meaning to us, but are fun to listen to.

It's a very creative game, one of the things that I really like about it, as you're this little blob that runs around collecting blossoms and finding your friend "Mui Mui," who says "Mui Mui," which is brings a smile of accomplishment to my face and a neat feeling of hearing something cute.

It's a short game with only three worlds, and it's disappointingly easy, and even a novice gamer could go through it in a day or two without dying. At first I thought it was impossible to die, but once the game became harder, I found out that it's possible. The overall theme is the same: there's the cartoony happy generic stage, the ice stage, the jungle stage, the spooky stage and the spartan blue world, for lack of a better name.

It's worth the $30, and after a break, I intend to go back to it and start playing from the beginning. It's a game that's good for your mental health: there's no violence, the Miu Miu make you smile, and the music puts you in a good mood. Since I just bought my PSP, it's a pleasant and unique change from all the masculine shooting games that are predominant with the PSP.

Charming, stylized, colorful & innovative fun!

LocoRoco is a Japanese import game for the PSP handheld system. I think it is one of the most enjoyable games for a great gaming platform that unfortunately still lacks a solid title list. But, this simple, charming game, appropriate for kids as well as adults, is well worth seeking out.

You play as LocoRoco, a very, very happy, singing water balloon(?). The gameplay is very easy to pick up, but still quite challenging to play. Using the side triggers, you tilt the entire level so your character rolls through it, and by pressing both triggers you can bounce. As you gather red flower-bud thingies you grow in size, and then you can break up into individual smaller LocoRoco's to move through parts of the levels. There are a unique variety of characters that assist you through the game, and some interesting bad guys as well. This simple gameplay becomes very challenging as you progress, particularly if you look for all of the hidden things in the levels and try to complete with a perfect score.

The graphics are done in an appealing 2-D style with bright, flat colors, that reminds me a bit of a kid-friendly Peter Max (1960's graphic artist). It fits the tone of the game perfectly. The music is just plain odd! Be warned: you will have these silly nonsense jingles stuck in your head for a while after playing this game. But that's ok, because they are some of the most unique, catchy songs ever created for a game (in my opinion). They seem to be sung by children, as well as adults sped up chipmunk-style, and are sung entirely in the made up LocoRoco language. They range from outright hilarious, to surprisingly subtle in tone, and the songs evolve with the gameplay, depending on where you are in the level, and how many LocoRoco's you have on-screen (when you break up your big LocoRoco into smaller ones, the group sings in harmony!).

This game could charm the pants off even the most jaded gamer. Every time I play it, I get a silly grin and find myself babbling along with the soundtrack. I get some funny looks when I play it on the bus. It's difficult to truly describe how appealing this game is unless you try it. It may be just too simple and silly for some gamers, but I think it deserves a wide audience and think many would enjoy it. It does get a bit repetitive if you play through the whole thing, but in short doses, I find it is a great diversion. And if you are in a funk, this game is better than Prozac! (LocoRoco is not intended to diagnose or cure any illness...)

I give this game a high recommendation. I think it will appeal to puzzle game fans, young and old, and anyone interested in unique games for the PSP. I find it has a moderate replay value, as I go back to try to find all the hidden things and get perfect scores for some more challenging levels, and just to re-experience the wackier ones.

Also: the soundtrack CD is available as a Japanese import. Now I'll NEVER get these songs out of my head.

Yay!

A great delight for your senses!!

I came upon this game as a demo from SONY. I downloaded it onto my PSP and was hooked within 5 minutes. I needed to have the full game. Don't let the child-like voices and images steer you clear of this game if you are an older gamer. Trust me, you will have some fun.

The only thing is, I did beat it a little too fast. Still very fun.

Annoyingly Addictive

I saw a review of this game on TechTV, which was so glowing that I had to check it out. When I recieved my copy of LocoRoco I was not surprised that the reviewers on TechTV suggested it would consume you. I had a grin just from the music alone, and it stayed until I finally gave it up for bed. I handed it over to my 10 year old cousin, who after playing for 20 minutes said, "This game is SO ANNOYING!" But that didn't stop him from playing another 40 minutes or so, smiling and making those familiar noises of aggravation when you miss a berry.

The gameplay is different than most popular games these days and takes a little getting used to, the graphics aren't mind-blowing, but LocoRoco packs a big personality punch, and is a clear indication that a game doesn't need to be another cookie cutter title just like the rest to capture you for hours. A must have.

Cute Overload!

I enjoy cute things as much as the next person, but too much of a good thing... That's probably the only gripe I have about this little gem. Historically, I've never been much for Japanese games, but this one is very addictive and fun. The graphics are simple but vibrant. The physics system seems dead on. Some of the levels aren't that challenging (especially if you are a hard core gamer). The high pitched giberish that the little locoroco's spew out can get on your nerves, but this really doesn't distract from the fun. I keep tilting my PSP as if it's a sixaxis controller, hoping that I can get a steeper angle and make those little rocos move faster (to no avail). Simple controls and a simple goal make this a great game for the whole family.
